When there are many words, sin is unavoidable, but the one who controls his lips is prudent. Proverbs 10:19 probably should be my "life verse." I have not committed a lot of physical sins in my life - no adultery, violence, no bank robberies - but I have not avoided the sins of the tongue. One of my siblings asked me once, half in jest and half in exasperation, "Don't you ever just shut up?" Jenni gets frustrated at my tendency to engage strangers in conversation while waiting in line at the grocery. I am a talker. I haven't always learned the wisdom of not talking (insert your joke … [Read more...] about Donald Trump, Evangelicals, and Blasphemy

An Open Letter to President-Elect Donald Trump
Congratulations, Mr. President, on the stunning events of yesterday’s election. You shocked the world. Anyone who knows me or reads this blog knows that not only did I not vote for you but I expressed in the strongest terms my belief that you were not qualified to be president, that I was disgusted by your behavior, disagreed with many of your positions, distrusted your sincerity even on positions we held in common such as the pro-life position, and generally disdained your personality, deportment, and conversation. Sir, I determined last summer that this day should not come and that I … [Read more...] about An Open Letter to President-Elect Donald Trump
Evangelicals and Donald Trump: Its not Him. Its Us. (Joel Rainey)
(I was supposed to post this a couple of days ago, but I've been enjoying the flu. Most of you know Joel. You may not know that he recently returned to the pastorate!) Two days ago, the "Super Tuesday" elections seemed to solidify the already large lead of the current front-runner for the Republican nomination for President. Donald Trump has surprised nearly everyone, and if the trend continues, we are headed toward a Republican convention that will nominate him to face off with the Democratic nominee--presumably Hillary Clinton--in the November general election. It is truly sad that … [Read more...] about Evangelicals and Donald Trump: Its not Him. Its Us. (Joel Rainey)
Donald Trump IS Barack Obama
Originally posted at "Dave Miller Daily." There are a lot of words you could use to describe Donald Trump. Narcissist - his focus and concern isn't America, it's all about Donald Trump. He judges people, press, and everyone by "how they treat me." "It's all about ME," according to Trump. Misogynist - his treatment of women is despicable. No more need be said. Racist – it is not too much of a stretch to use this word to describe his border policy and his treatment of Muslims. Bully - he is mean-spirited, vindictive, and nasty. Bizarre – he says and does some of the most … [Read more...] about Donald Trump IS Barack Obama
An Open Letter to the GOP: I Will NOT Vote for Donald Trump – EVER!
I have been a loyal part of the Grand Old Party since my first election cycle back in 1976 when I was one of the few people in my Baptist college who supported Gerald Ford against the Southern Baptist peanut farmer from Georgia. I volunteered for the Ford campaign (just a one day thing) and got to shake his hand. No, he did not stumble near me. I lived through the the heady Reagan Revolution and then watched it all unravel with the Clinton reversal. I have been a consistent and loyal Republican voter in national elections. If my count is correct, this stand to be a tie-breaking election for … [Read more...] about An Open Letter to the GOP: I Will NOT Vote for Donald Trump – EVER!
Ebola, Donald Trump, and the Gospel of Christ (by Adam Blosser)
Over the weekend, Donald Trump sent out a series of tweets weighing in on the current Ebola crisis. https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/statuses/495379061972410369 https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/statuses/495415298808639488 Suffer the consequences? Liberal do gooders? This is morally outrageous. Mr. Trump would do well to educate himself on the facts concerning Ebola before opening his mouth or striking his keyboard again. Facts aside, the very idea that there should be "consequences" for doing what we all know in our hearts to be right is extremely disturbing. While Trump's … [Read more...] about Ebola, Donald Trump, and the Gospel of Christ (by Adam Blosser)
Trump, the GOP, and a Primer in Self-Destruction
I will admit, last night's vote in Georgia stunned me. I wanted the GOP to win those. It is not that I passionately pro-GOP these days, but I am unenthused about the idea of the Democrats having unfettered control of government for the next couple of years. They can implement some policies that will be difficult to undo. I know little about Perdue or Loeffler. I know nothing about Ossoff. What I know about Warnock is not good. Fundamentally, I believe in the old adage, that government governs best which governs least. If the GOP could have pulled off at least one win in Georgia, and it should … [Read more...] about Trump, the GOP, and a Primer in Self-Destruction
So, Al Mohler will vote for Trump?
Mohler, somewhat long winded, in his own words, here. The Rev. R. Albert Mohler Jr., one of the key leaders of the Southern Baptist Convention, plans to vote for President Trump in the fall, a reversal of his position in 2016 when he argued that support of Trump risks destroying evangelicals’ credibility. One of the country's best religion reporters, Sara Pulliam Bailey, in The Washington Post yesterday. Trump formerly "The Great Evangelical Embarrassment" (Mohler's phrase in WAPO, 2016), is now his guy for 2020. Boom! One might say that he just blew up his credibility but more likely, … [Read more...] about So, Al Mohler will vote for Trump?
NeverTrump Deserter
There's a substantial chance that I'll vote for Donald Trump in the next presidential election. In a way, that's not all that remarkable. Millions of people all across the country will do that. Not all of them, however, ever wrote anything like this. I am defecting from the NeverTrump state. Here's how and why. A Choice, Not an Endorsement: My largest concerns about voting for Donald Trump the last time around had to do with the negative impact upon my testimony that would come from endorsing someone with the character flaws that President Trump has demonstrated (see the aforementioned … [Read more...] about NeverTrump Deserter
