Beautifully written.

Who among us has not struggled with sin in one respect or another? This one just happens to be homosexuality. How many heterosexual men have not committed adultery with their eyes? Yet we must hold each other to account and too often fail to do so winking at some sin because it is more common and condemning some sinners because we don't have the same struggle as they do thinking it shouldn't be a struggle for them at all. Neither is acceptable for the Body of Christ.

Mike and Bill,

I think the SBC is doing a good job at the highest levels of interpreting the issue correctly, particularly in light of how some denominations have yielded to cultural pressure and make inappropriate moves. Moves that really do not help the Christian struggler at all because they seek to legitimize a sin rather than compassionately helping the sinner find freedom from it. I do think the SBC message has been slow to trickle down to the individual churches and through the seminaries. Sexually acting out within one's own gender is clearly a sin. The reasons some people have this sin in their lives is not as important as walking with them to help them resist the temptation to act on it. "Repenting" is not the same as "being cured." Seeking to be righteous and holy while still bearing the weight of temptation is not impossible. I have received many e-mails from SBC church members and church leaders who struggle with this sin, don't embrace it, and are moving beyond it. Those who are most successful have brothers and sisters who do not struggle with homosexuality, but are able to walk with those who do.

This post really brings to bear two serious misconceptions that Christians and their churches really need to acknowledge before we can fruitfully deal with the issue. One is that homosexual desire is chosen. Two is that becoming a Christian will "cure" homosexual desire. If we can acknowledge these, while maintaining a firm stand on what the bible does teach about homosexual activity, we will have gone a long way towards being able to reach out to people with this struggle.

I suppose how one would respond to someone saying they were attracted to members of their own sex would depend on the situation. Are they currently iving in the sin--actively engaging in homosexual activity? There would have to be a biblical call to repentance and if the person refused to repent we follow Matthew 18:15-17 in church discipline with the goal of restoring a brother. Is this just a sinful desire that they deal with? I'd give them my number and tell them to call me and I'll pray with them any time they're tempted to think or act on this impulse.

I have no go answer as to whether someone can loose this sinful desire. I know there are things that I wake up everyday and have to pray for strength to deal with. Then, about 9:45, I have to pray again. Sometimes 15 minutes later I'm pleading with God again. I know that the church has little compassion on folks who struggle with same sex attraction and that is sad. For there to be any victory in this sin, like any sin, the person who struggles with it must acknowledge it as sin.
