I have been praying for the GCR and I had to remind myself of something.
The GCR is not a magic bullet for the current problems in the SBC, nor is it a magic bullet for the future. It is one piece of a long, hard process. I believe it is a step in the right direction, but that is all.
The GCR is not a magic bullet.

Our state paper just ran a lead article on the net today about how the IMB might have to cut its mission personnel by 600 due to a short fall in offerings. If the Jobs come back (and they were saying on the news this past week that the jobs that have gone will not be coming back), it will be very slowly. During that time the strain on all welfare resources will grow greater and greater. Sooner or later, the system will break down. Then we might well see a failure in our social structures and a catastrophic collapse. What we need more than anything else is a might movement in and of prayer on the behalf of those suffering from unemploymnent and those suffering from under-employment. We are very likely under going a tremendous and traumatic socio-economic change. There are those who want political, ecclesiastical, as well as other kinds of change. A Third Great Awakening is no easy solution, but it is likely the only one that will enable the world to survive with the minimum of disaster. We need scholars, etc., to study the prayer that was involved in the first two awakenings along with the theology and other elements of such a visitation. And we need ministers who understand and know how to apply the materials truly learned from the earlier seaons of Divine favor. My heart’s prayer for 36 years has been for such an awakening, and that cry grows more urgent and agonizing as things grow worse. I am reminded of what Judson said, when some one ask him about the future of the mission in Burma at a time wen it seemed most hopeless. He said the future is as bright as the promises of God. The same could be said for the hope of another visitation in these post-modern times.
