I was speaking about their right as an American, not their right as a believer. I agree wholeheartedly with your point about what God considers acceptable and non-acceptable. I should have been clearer.

I was at the SBC at the time of this post, but thought I would finally comment.

First, any Southern Baptist messenger can present a motion. Probably nine out of ten (or more) of those motions will never be voted on or voted for. Most will be referred to agencies for the trustees to deal with, and maybe brought back next year to the floor for a vote. A rare few get to be voted on immediately (like the one on the GCR committee). So don’t get too upset about a motion presented; it usually means very little. When a motion is passed and implemented - then you can get upset.

Second, Baptists are and have been against beverage alcohol for a lot of good reasons. Get used to it. They have been at least since the 1880s. They have passed numerous resolutions against alcohol. You can find the resolutions against drinking at sbc.net. I’ve found that many unsaved folks respect us for our convictions on this issue; for they know the incredible damage and heartache it causes.

The churchs , 84% of which have a Sunday attendance under 200, send their money in to SBC. SBC creates Lifeway with over 100 stores. Then Lifeway is allowed to take over Broadman & Holman Publishing Co. and its holdings who then changes its name to B & H Publishing Group to include their holdings and planned exspansions. I guess nobody is making any money or the SBC wouldn't be coming to us for even more money - for what ? Expand or buy more businesses , bail the ones out we have or to just continue to do business as usual and send more people on mission trips they think we should pay for. I'm thinking a complete airing of SBC's assets and obligations is required to better determine EVERYBODYS options. I'm starting to get a little concerned.

Since the Bible proohibits, excessive drinking, sex outside of marriage , and
foolish jesting, no one has the right to have a calvalier attitude toward them.

jack, I didn't see your comments so I didn't have anything in mind in regard to your posts. I was talking about what I feel is an irresponsible attitude the cussing preacher has to alcohol and sex -- two very powerful issues. Several posters joked about drinking as a response to this or that. That was what I was responding to. Again, I agree that anybody has a right to a cavalier attitude toward drinking and sex, as much as I have a right to reject such an attitude.

Jack- I finally found what you wrote in the middle of June's blogs somewhere. So, I don't know where I made fun of drinking alcohol;but alcoholism has been as close to me as it has to you. We've seen the ugly side of where a single beer can lead! And I've seen it more than once in my extended family among people who made a good living and they all died in a stuper on a hospital gurney and I was there. I've also seen mental illness which is as bad in its own way and can also lead to alcoholism aqnd drug abuse. Maybe if there was some humor it was a "cover" but not intended. The flip side is that there are people that alcohol hasn't affected ---yet. When you speak of sex it makes me wonder if we've gotten our signals crossed as I didn't remark about sex. I've seen a make-shift alter with a Bible all of which was strewn about an apartment which was covered in blood from a young person who finally realised he was in trouble having "cooked" the wrong recipe and tried to drink to much of his own blood according to a verse in the bible as he had read it, and was crawling around trying to find the doorknob to get out and get help. No joke! Stories I've got but this blog is about another subject. So almost everybody has heard of LIFEWAY. Has anybody heard of HOLMAN Publishing Co, aka BROADMAN & HOLMAN aka now as B & H Publishing Group?

I think you prove the point of those who dislike Driscoll's brash and careless speech. For you "drinkiing" is a joke. It has ALWAYS been a serious issue for Baptists. I find your jokes about drinking personally offensive -- my brother died young from a life of drinking. It all started with a harmless? beer. So, count me as one who does feel the contemptuous and careless speech of Drisoll is beyond the bounds for this Baptist. Also, yes, I know Driscoll has tried to distance himself from his speech, but you keep bringing it up so I assume those who do not share your views will keep responding -- at least for now. Joking about sex and drinking seem careless in my view. Both these issues have death attached to them when they are not taken seriously. Just my opinion.
