Personally, I hope we hang together. After all a mission force of 10,000 ain't to be sneezed at. And add the 42,ooo churches and those who serve them. That makes a good impact when politics roll around, especially when we remind them that our ancestors and predecessors (sometimes they were the same) fought in the Amrrican Revolution. We can even point out that the Baptist ministers in their agreement with the colonial legislature of VA said that in exchange for the freedom to practice their religion would go back to their communities and encourage their young men to enlist in the patriots' cause. Some of my ancestors were Craigs (a Scotch clan) and I found in the volumes of the DAR one whole regiment of colonial VA troops in which every last name was the same, Craig. That's just on branch of my ancestors. Think how the IRS would have conniption kitties over that. Talk about political. Other denominations did the same. The IRS is acting out of order, regardless of what rules have been passed. True, we have a time getting together today. Even the Sovereign Grace group has problems. The real aim of such preaching in my view is not to make Calvinists but to make Christians. The real liberalism of the SBC came out of the early calvinistic movement. Consider how Manly, Sr., et. al., were not contentious in their approach, nor were the first faculty. They maintained the doctrines of grace, but it was in a gracious manner. By the way for all the folks who think they know their history, the liberal spirit cme from Jonathan Edwards who had a little conversation wth George Whitefield about his attacking the unconverted ministers, while they were riding to George's next appointment. Was that when George really began to be reconciled with John Wesley? Did Stearns and Marshall know of that more liberal spirit? Was that part of the reason for "eldresses" in Sandy Creek Church? Did Manly inherit that attitude? How come they did not set out on a campaign to get all Southern Baptists on the same wave length? Did they just simply try to lead in that direction instead of drive? Are we on the verge of seeing our nation go the way of all the others - in an economic collapse, when we need to be praying, laboring for a great awakening? Why don't our seminaries teach courses in Sovereign Grace evangelism?
