Can we be involved with other networks?.....

Recently my local church (SBC) organized an area crusade. One SBC pastor become furious and stormed out because there was an Assembly of God pastor there. The AG pastor said with tears, I'm not here about any of the 'sideline issues' that separate us denominationally, only to take part in sharing Jesus with our community. As long as we agree on who Jesus is, the rest is sideline and not to be debated in way or at a time that detracts from the message of the gospel.

I agree with him. He never side-tracked any of the process and was an asset. But that one pastor could not get over the issue and stormed out, showing his tale. How embarrassing.

I work with a person who is from an charismatic background and we have great fellowship. He knows we have different views on certain things. But because we are both Christians we discuss many great things. We leave the sideline issues (tongues, etc.) to the side. As long as we both agree on Jesus, the rest is sideline, family issues that can be discussed 'upstairs' when we get there.

So, can we be involved with other churches and networks? You bet... as long as it's all about Jesus.

It has been my lot to find out that one of my ancestors is in the History of Alabama Baptists, in the 1830s, Elder Holland Middleton, and that apparently, he was one of the officers of the court or appointed to act in that capacity at the execution of the will of Elder Daniel Marshall whose wife Martha Stearns Marshall was an eldress in the Sandy Creek Baptist Church. My view is Sovereign Grace as was my ancestor and as was the view of Daniel Marshall and his wife. In addition I have another ancestor who was a Craig and one friend who was descended from Elder Elijah Craig who went to jail for preaching the Gospel of Sovereign Grace in Va. These people make it very plain that Sovereign Grace has been the norm, the standard for Baptists frm the get-go. Also the same people were responsible for allowing differences on the issue of atonement, allowing that the preaching that Christ tasted death for every man shall be no barrier to communion. Daniel Marshall and Shubal Stearns could never have signed BFM2K. John Gano and the others were not Landmarkers, and the moderates, when they were in power, did not want any giving, any association with outside groups. It is also true that diversity dilutes the CP giving and weakens us to some degree. But like the Baptists of old we will continue to ferment like the leaven we are, agreeing and disagreeing, and all te time God will be employing us to accomplish His will. Sooner or later this will all lead to that time when Jesus shall receive the heathen for His inheritance and the uttermost parts of the earth for a possession or, in other words, the Third Great Awakening which takes the whole earth for His eternal glory. God speed the day.

Greg,

Bingo. Many SBC churches do not want their non-Calvinist dollars planting Calvinist churches that are hosting "Beer and Bible" nights and reading Driscoll and Piper books. They too are autonomous and may freely choose (or perhaps they have been predestined) to become Third Degree Separationists.

By the way, just because Mohler said, "SBC churches HAVE to grow accustomed to churches being involved in other networks and in the SBC" does not make it true. We have been granted by God the free will to grow accustomed to it or not, whichever we may choose.
