Dr. CB Scott has been a pastor and an administrator both at SBC seminaries and colleges. He is now a DOM in Kentucky. He was a key player in the early days of blogging. He is an ardent Auburn Tigers fan. War Eagle! Former VP Joe Biden said something at the end of the recent debate that really made me think. He stated, "Look at us." I did exactly as he asked. Then I looked through both him and President Donald Trump. I looked so far through them both that I saw behind Mr. Biden his running mate, Senator Harris. Looking through and behind Mr. Trump, I saw Vice President Pence. Then it … [Read more...] about Look at Us! (Dr. CB Scott)
Discipleship Gap (by Jimmy Meek)
Why are “professing” followers of Jesus not being a major part of the solution to our broken and divided American culture? I have been thinking a lot lately about where we have missed it over the years in training up believers to worship the person of King Jesus, and to delightfully be “all in” with His mission to bring God’s glory to the nations. A short article will not answer this huge subject, but I am coming to believe that we have over-complicated the matter. In a life-on-life relationship, if we helped a believer know how to pray, study their Bible, share their faith—and then reproduce … [Read more...] about Discipleship Gap (by Jimmy Meek)
Nine Takeaways from LifeWay’s Theology Report (Scott Douglas)
It's fitting to write this while our church is hosting a weekly homeschool community through Classical Conversations. CC's motto is "To Know God and make Him known." It permeates everything they do. I hear my wife singing to her group of "Apprentices" about the Boston Tea Party and the class directly across the hall is using a clap/stomp beat to learn Latin. At the core of the CC curriculum is knowing God, who is the author of Truth and has revealed Himself to us. Recently the 2020 State of American Theology report was released by Lifeway Research. For research nerds this was like Christmas … [Read more...] about Nine Takeaways from LifeWay’s Theology Report (Scott Douglas)
On Diverse Reading Lists: A Friendly Response to Denny Burk (Griffin Gulledge)
This was originally posted on Griffin's website, Contra Mundum (griffingulledge.com). It is reposted here with permission. Disclaimer: During my time in Louisville, Denny Burk was the associate pastor of the church where I was a member. We maintain a friendly relationship to this day, and this post should be read as no exception to that. I spent some time yesterday reading and thinking about Denny Burk’s recent reflections posted on his blog entitled “The Dead-end of Research Justice.” Burk can always be relied upon to interrogate the demands of an ever-secularizing culture on … [Read more...] about On Diverse Reading Lists: A Friendly Response to Denny Burk (Griffin Gulledge)
A Good Reverse-Bivocational Option (Scott Wells)
Editor: After a recent article discussing bivocational pastoring options, a regular reader, Scott Wells from Ohio, sent this to me. This was prompted by responses to the recent post “Is the small, single full-time clergy staff church a luxury churches can no longer afford?” I am what I would call a reverse bi-vocational. In addition to serving as a full-time pastor, I also serve part-time as a chaplain in the National Guard. I would like to make a case for why it can be a win-win for smaller churches and their pastors. An NG chaplain will miss a minimum of two Sundays per year because … [Read more...] about A Good Reverse-Bivocational Option (Scott Wells)
Letter to SBC Leaders June 4, 2020 (Rick Armstrong)
Dear SBC Leaders, I recently read your joint statement addressing the death of George Floyd. Calling for the end of racial inequality in how America distributes justice to African American men and boys is appreciated. Unfortunately, your statement is simply not enough. After we have cried out to God in prayer against racial evil and you have posted a statement advocating justice for all Americans, regardless of race or economic considerations, there are some things that the SBC must do to make our Convention better. Who am I that I should be listened to on this matter? I am a Black man, … [Read more...] about Letter to SBC Leaders June 4, 2020 (Rick Armstrong)
What Father’s Day Means to Me (Stephan Scott)
Stephan's bio appears below, but he is the son of our friend, Dr. CB Scott. This article appeared originally in Focus on the Family and is republished with permission. Father’s Day is to me is about being thankful to the men in our lives who take on the responsibility and obligations of guiding us through life. Most of the time, taking that responsibility begins at the birth of their child. But, sometimes God gives children their father through other paths. When a man becomes a father, he takes on new obligations and expectations. I do not know this from … [Read more...] about What Father’s Day Means to Me (Stephan Scott)
Remembering Is Not Celebrating (Luke Holmes)
The news has been filled lately with unrest and violence over racial strife. Part of the action taken has been the tearing down of statues across the country. A statue of Christopher Columbus was thrown in the lake after being torn down in Richmond, VA and Robert E. Lee was taken down outside of a high school in Alabama. Tearing down statues is not a new thing. I remember seeing triumphant Iraqi citizens tear down statues of Saddam Hussein. Hungarians toppled a statue of Joseph Stalin in 1956. Across the world it continues to happen in light of recent protest. A statue of slave trader Edward … [Read more...] about Remembering Is Not Celebrating (Luke Holmes)
Memories of My Best Friend and Mentor, Dr. Robert E. Fowler (Wm Dwight McKissic, Sr)
With apologies, this came through a couple of days ago, but I've been a bit overwhelmed and woefully neglecting this site. I sometimes process grief by writing. Most persons who read this article never met, or heard of my best friend over the past 33 years, Rev. Robert E. Fowler. I encourage you to read the entire tribute though, because I assure you as I unpack memories of our friendship and his mentorship in my life, at some point you will be encouraged, enlightened, and ministered to, in a manner worthy of your time investment. You will also be ministering to me, as you help me … [Read more...] about Memories of My Best Friend and Mentor, Dr. Robert E. Fowler (Wm Dwight McKissic, Sr)
