The motion to form the GCR study committee died the death of all SBC motions – referral. I thought there might be a move to.fight referral but it didn’t happen, at least not yet.
There was a.”moment” during presidential nominations when Wiley Drake nonated himself after David Platt renominated Bryant Wright. My hope is that Wiley will get less than 1% as the SBC says a resounding no to his nonsense!
There is a good.spirit here today.
GCR study committee? I missed that one.
I wish the nominees had to give speeches. I’d love the material coming out of twitter were Drake allowed to give a speech.
This morning, from a guy in Missouri.
From Missouri? Why am I not surprised?
As a Missouri resident (life long), graduate of MBTS, member of a Missouri SBC Church, and (God willing) soon to be pastor of another Missouri SBC church, allow me on behalf of all “sane” Missouri Southern Baptists to apologize for the few oddballs we have in our convention. Then again in the past 10 or so years it seems the “odd-balls” have ran things…so sorry for that too. As for who made the motion, I think Jim Wells (DOM of Tri-County) would have made it if he was well. (Pray for him, his family, and the association as he is… Read more »
Lots of good folks in Missouri as anywhere else.
It’s just that certain people are more willing to grab a mic.
It was Refered? I thought it was ruled “out-of-order”…Did I miss something…then again my online connection has been spotty so I might have genuinely missed something.
Referred to order of business committee, who ruled out of order because the Executive Committee is supposed to be already doing it.
as should the trustees of every entity…thus making another committee a waste of time/money.
Twitter is buzzing about someone suggesting that “country boys” were needed in the SBC? I’d love some context if there is any…
A messenger from Oklahoma complained that the Oklahoma nominees for boards and agencies were all “city boys and girls” and we need some country boys on the report.
Good spirited older fella.
102 votes for Wiley Drake is 101 too many. That extra 1 is for Drake himself…If he is willing to nominate himself, he clearly is entitled to vote for himself.
We will have to check the final numbers, but I heard about 170 votes for Wiley. Which is too many by even more.
But he received less than 1 out of 20 votes. That would seem to be a mandate.
A mandate that he’ll be back next year…
Bill,
If the convention keeps shrinking, next year he may have enough votes to win!
So would that be the first time that a convention opens with imprecatory prayers?
Sorry, couldn’t resist that one…
Ok Frank. That one made me laugh out loud. Cut it out. 🙂
I keep hearing 2274 to 102.
Hey, I wonder if anyone should make a recommendation that any candidate who nominates themselves for SBC office, and fails to garner 5% of the vote, shall forever be forbidden from making any recommendations on the floor of the SBC annual Meeting.
That might solve some things… lol…
Uhoh! 8 ballots were disqualified in the voting for SBC President! I wonder if Drake is going to demand a recount and that those ballots be counted?
Baptist Press tweeted it at 102. Do we assume that 101 really meant to vote that way or that there’s a few that misunderstood the ballot?
OHH I GOT IT! Didnt the folks responsible for the “Unity” Great Commission Task Force – Task Force say that they had 100 or so members supporting them? Could that be where Wiley got all his votes!? lol
Dave,
Compared to the number of possible voters in the SBC, it doesn’t appear like much of a mandate for the President elect.
I think that says about as much as Wiley’s 102 or more votes.
I saw another report that supported the 102 number. I could have sworn I heard it reported at 170 something. Either way, it is hard for me to believe that many people still voted for Wiley Drake after all his shameful shenanigans.
When he nominated himself, I started laughing out loud and I think I offended some people near me. I couldn’t help it.
I was trying really hard to make a joke that went along the lines of “You’re old and a Yankees fan so you misheard the number.”
But I just couldn’t find it tonight.
101…there weren’t by chance a large number of black/white spotted dogs running around the Convention Center in Phoenix…perhaps with a large Cadillac chasing them?
Bravo, Josh. Bravo.
Dave,
You should offer an update indicated that the motion here was ultimately ruled “out of order”. It died even quicker than the slow death of referral. I for one am happy.
Yeah, that can o’ worms did not need to get opened again.
Did the prez really say that preachers should stop preaching Fox News like it was the Gospel? If so, big kudos.
Yes, he said something to that effect – that we should get our worldview from the Bible, not from Fox News.
He was not criticizing Fox News, though. He expressed appreciation for a news network that gave both sides of issues instead of just the liberal side, but then he warned about becoming a Fox News Christian.
Hmm, I wonder. While I appreciate the option of news from a Conservative ideology, I’m not convinced that they truly give both sides of issues. For example, MSNBC.com reported both on Weinergate and Sarah Palin’s curious revision of Paul Revere. I don’t recall Fox mentioning Palin’s gaffe at all, or the subsequent attempt by her followers to edit wikipedia to reflect what she said. But to be fair, I might have missed it.
Fox News Christian. Good term. I know lots of them.
Yesterday, I “checked out” worse than LeBron James in the fourth quarter. Not only did I slip into a boredom-induced coma, but the EMT’s trying to wake me up slipped into one as well.
The new standing rule is that anything of interest whatsoever must be ruled out of order or referred to a committee.
I DID enjoy Richard Land, Paige Patterson and the NAMB testimonies from Norwich, Connecticut.
Rick,
We may disagree about some things, but I give you mad props for working LeBron’s failures into this thread!
Rick,
Yea I can’t believe that affirming “Great Commission Giving” did not stir up some dust!

So apparently Peter Lumpkins just became as famous as Wiley Drake at this convention…
Bill:
What did he do to become famous?
Apparently he went toe to toe with Albert Mohler in a very lopsided version of Beyond Thunderdome…
Actually, from what I saw, admittedly not much, he was question Mohler more on Mohler’s articles/statements and less about the report that he was actually delivering.
Twitter blew up.
He got “Mohlered”
That’s the new term I am seeing on twitter.
So apparently we’re going to get an endless stream of blogposts and “edited” videos from his site now.
I’m sorry, but it’s not like the leaders of the convention dropped an “Applause” sign when Mohler responded to the accusations…er…questions presented.
There was no phantom culture of intimidation, it was a culture of “Great, someone actually wants to challenge Wiley Drake for tool of the convention”
