Dr. Adam Greenway has been unanimously elected the ninth president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, according to a release on the SWBTS website. He was also elected as a professor of evangelism and apologetics. In addition to Greenway, the board named Randy L. Stinson as provost and vice president for academic administration, also unanimously.
They affirmed the work of Dr. Jeffrey Bingham during the time he was interim president, an affirmation I would strongly affirm. I have spoken to many from the seminary who tell of the work he has done in providing stability and a positive environment at the school after the tumultuous times of recent years.
We thank Danny Roberts and the Search team for their work. I do not know Dr. Greenway personally, but I have heard nothing but wonderful things about him. At the risk of raising a point of controversy, a dean from Southern Seminary was elected unanimously by the trustees of Southwestern. This seems to be an affirmation of the search team’s fine work.
I believe that Dr. Greenway can chart a new course for Southwestern, respecting that which is good in its history but steering away from that which became toxic in recent years. He does not have an easy job but he will do his job well.
I had both of them as a professor at Southern they couldn’t have chosen better men to fill those positions!
As an alumnus of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, I am very happy about this. You are right, the campus had become very toxic and I am glad for the change. My prayers are with Dr. Greenway, SWBTS and the Southern Baptist Convention.
I am thrilled about Dr Adam Greenway being unanimously affirmed as president of SWBTS (my alma mater). I am unfamiliar with Dr Stinson but praying for him. Overwhelmed with gratitude for the heroic work of Dr Bingham in restoring the seminary. May God richly bless all involved. It is a great day to be a “Southwesterner.”
As an alumnus of Southwestern, I am a happy camper today. I know both of these men, and they will serve with effectiveness and distinction.
This is indeed wonderful news. Let us pray for Dr. Greenway, his family, and SWBTS!
How blessed it is to be part of a Denomination where our future leaders are being trained by godly and bible-believing men and women!
Yes, Dr Greenway served as a dean at Southern, but it should be noted that Southwestern is his alma mater, at least for his MDiv, so it appears to be an equal trade, so to speak. 😉
As a Southwestern alum, I believe this is an excellent choice given the time and condition of the school and its needs. So far, the denomination is three for three when it comes to choosing leadership from within the insider trustee and committee groups, but after what it’s been through, Southwestern needed someone from an academic leadership background who had experience at a school that defines itself by its academic credibility and success in meeting expected outcomes. This was not a position to use as a reward for loyalty to a denominational political perspective, to rescue a megachurch pastor or to promote a friend from a small, struggling Bible college. The decline of the SBC’s attendance and membership correlates with the decline of its seminaries and while some might argue that the decline of the seminaries has been caused by the decline in membership and resources, most of the churches get their pastoral and staff leadership from the six seminaries, at least, they did until recently.
I’m certainly no major contributor, but this news will prompt me to resume sending in my annual contribution. The school has never been off my prayer list.
These are two really fine men.
