I am only about a week late on this, but seeing that I have an earned doctorate in procrastination, that is pretty good. This is our SBC Voices “Fat Pastor, Fit Pastor” challenge, and it is officially underway (underweigh?). The following men have indicated they want to be in. If you’d like to join us, please feel free – you can get in at any time, though the longer you wait (weight? – sorry, I’ll stop now) the more of a head start the rest of us will have.
The goal, simply, is to lose weight between now and the end of the year. The challenge is designed to provide support, encouragement, accountability and prayer while we embark on this endeavor. Here are the guidelines.
1) All you have to do to be a part of this is let me know, either here or by an email to davemillerisajerk@hotmail.com. If all you want is encouragement, that is fine. If you want to be a part of the challenge, I need an official starting weight.
2) Between now and the end of the year, we will have monthly weigh-ins to see who is making the most progress. I will not publish your weight, but I am keeping records here. We will have two categories in the challenge – total pounds and percentage of body weight. There are no prizes other than the encouragement of a job well done. Since we are getting started so close to the end of July, our first weigh-in will be at the end of August.
3) We will post articles here from the various participants about their struggle and successes – designed to energize, encourage and hold one another accountable.
4) Please, pray for one another! Those of you who are skinny may not realize how hard this struggle is.
Participants:
Here are the people who have indicated to me that they want to be a part of this. I have weights for everyone except two of them. For a couple of the participants, all I have is the screen name you use when you post. If you want to give out your full name, that would be great.
Here is the updated list of those who are involved. Again, if I missed you, let me know.

If I’ve missed you, or if you want to join, please let me know.
Dave,
You left me off. Starting weight…..378 lbs.
and you’re nine and a half feet tall too
Christiane,
If I was 9’6″ tall, then I would be skinny!!! I havent been skinny in a long, long, long time.
David 🙂
Count me in at 175.
I’m in. Starting weight: 213 lbs (I’m 5’7″). I lost 30 lbs a couple years ago, and was feeling pretty good, but have since gained it all back. I’m hoping to do it again (minus the gaining it back part).
I wish you all the best in this endeavor and pray your efforts will be well rewarded. Keep in mind, when losing the fat you lose some muscle, too. That will be a bigger problem when you go off the diet because the fat comes back faster. You need muscle to keep your metabolism high enough to burn off new fat. Consider bodybuilding exercise as you diet. You don’t have to go crazy, just enough to make sure that what you eat is going to build the muscle.

I will participate and put me at 205 for all the world to know. Maybe I can get to 190 but I’m not religious about it, nor a slave to any insurance company chart.
I predict that Dave will have baptist press contact him about doing a story on this if he doesn’t procrastinate and let it drop.
I will throw myself in the ring. Starting 275.
Sign me up. I weigh 203. I’m 5’9″. I got up to 216 about 8 months ago. My goal is 180-185. For God’s glory alone.
I eat yogurt for breakfast, fruit and peanuts for lunch, and what I want for supper. Keeping my calorie intake at around 1500 per day. I exercise 45 minutes a day, 5 days a week. (Just started the stricter diet and exercise about 3 weeks ago.)
I’m trying to tell my stomach how much to eat instead of allowing my stomach to tell me how much to eat. I don’t want to be like Esau–a mere product of my appetites. Instead, I hope to beat my flesh “black and blue,” that when I preach to others, I myself do not become disqualified.
I’m in. Starting at 259.
I’m in. Starting at 203, already down from 209. Need to end up around 180-185. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen those numbers.
I’m 260 with my leg on. Shooting for 240… for starters. Will be playing lots of hopscotch with my daughters.
