I used to be a caged-Calvinist. Seriously, I was really bad. Once I came to embrace the doctrines of grace I became very ungracious. I guess I felt duped. Maybe I wanted so badly for others to embrace what had opened my eyes. Who knows, all that really matters is to say that I was a jerk. I measured people not by how much they loved Jesus but how doctrinally pure they were (read "whether or not they were Calvinist"). And I was very quick to get myself into arguments defending Jesus and his beloved disciple; John Calvin. Then I read this by John Newton and God used it to utterly break … [Read more...] about John Newton On Controversy

Paige Patterson And Al Mohler “Why Calvinism Should NOT Divide the SBC”
At the 2006 Southern Baptist Convention held in Greensboro, NC, there was a breakout session lead by Paige Patterson, the President of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and Al Mohler, President of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary on "Reaching Today's World Through Differing Views of Election." Here are some quotes from both men... Quotes and implications from Patterson: 1. "My fervent prayer is that whatever your beliefs are about the sovereignty of God … you will join me in taking the Gospel to the ends of the earth.” 2. "I would caution my non-Calvinist brethren against … [Read more...] about Paige Patterson And Al Mohler “Why Calvinism Should NOT Divide the SBC”
The “New and Improved” SBC Voices
I put out an appeal for help in posting at SBC Voices and the response was gratifying and overwhelming. I want to tell you a little about what we want this site to become – “the vision thing.” Then, I want to introduce you to our new team of regular contributors. Of course, we will also have guest bloggers on a regular basis. The Plan When I got into blogging back in 2006, it was a Wild West shootout. There were good guys and bad guys, our side against their side. I joined right in. But I always had this nagging feeling that the way we communicated with one another just was not … [Read more...] about The “New and Improved” SBC Voices
A Crisis of Faith and Why I am an Ice Cream Presbyterian
There's not a day that goes by that I don't think of some idea for a movie scene that I would love to see. If I wrote down every one of them I'd have the funniest script for a movie that probably only I would laugh at. In all seriousness, I am so, so thankful that the Lord Jesus Christ has graciously saved me. Yet, when it comes to a sense of humor and a perspective on observing life, well, I just ain't right. I realize that, in truth, a pastor's job is demanding of his time and energy, so realistically I would never do this, but... I would love to schedule a counseling appointment with … [Read more...] about A Crisis of Faith and Why I am an Ice Cream Presbyterian
I Need Help!
I know. Insert your joke here... Seriously, I am looking for people who want to write for SBC Voices. I can offer you the same money I get (if you are good, I will double your salary!). But the main thing I can offer you is an audience. We have that at SBC Voices. This is a very active website (less so in the last few days since I haven't been posting anything, of course). People will read what you write. They will, of course, comment as well. Our comment streams tend to get lively at times, out of control at other times. I try to exert some measure of control, but the SBC … [Read more...] about I Need Help!
Not Sure Where I Fit In…(by Tom Bryant)
(Editor: I often browse the blogs of people who comment here at SBC Voices. I browsed Tom's blog - The View from Osprey - yesterday and came to one conclusion - he doesn't write often enough. He has a brilliant post which I got permission to copy here. Thought you might enjoy it.) Do you ever feel like you don’t fit in among any of the evangelical groups? I’m not a Calvinist, but I am uncomfortable at my fellow non-Cals painting Calvinists as the evil spawn of a new fascism with a desire to take over the SBC. I am not a Calvinist, but Al Mohler’s idea that Reformed theology … [Read more...] about Not Sure Where I Fit In…(by Tom Bryant)
Is the SBC a Dysfunctional Family?
Is your family more "Leave It to Beaver" or "Married with Children"? I am not completely sure that there is such a thing in this sinful world as a totally functional family. Sin causes us all to be dysfunctional at one level or another and we bring that to our families. We also bring that dysfunction to our denominations. Liberals and moderates often present a nostalgic view of the pre-CR SBC, as if it was a place of peace, happiness and unity focused on missions and evangelism - in which everyone sang Kumbaya together as we aggressively won the world to Christ! When we don't like the … [Read more...] about Is the SBC a Dysfunctional Family?
Am I a Calvinist? You Make the Call!
Over the last several years, quite a few young Southern Seminary grads have come to serve churches in Iowa. In fact, I'll let you in on a little secret. We have a joke up here about the Southern Seminary "conspiracy" to take over the Iowa Baptist Convention (like we would be a high priority for a "takeover"). When I see two of the young SBTS grads sitting together, I will ask them if this is an official conspiracy meeting. They will usually tell me that it is. My problem is this: I'm not really sure if I am part of the conspiracy or not. I've always considered myself a Calvinist, but … [Read more...] about Am I a Calvinist? You Make the Call!
Miller Time: My Blogging Agenda
Keith Olbermann is not my favorite commentator - not by a long-shot. But his recent suspension (and reinstatement) by MSNBC made little sense. He was suspended "indefinitely" (which turned out to be two days) for giving donations to Democratic congressional candidates. Really? I'm shocked! Olbermann makes no pretense of objectivity. He is a liberal Democrat and everyone knows it. He does not provide information, but analysis from a liberal perspective. Was MSNBC surprised that Olbermann supported liberal candidates? Olbermann is the left wing's Sean Hannity. Obviously, I agree … [Read more...] about Miller Time: My Blogging Agenda
