We all knew it was coming, but it has happened. Fred Luter has been elected unanimously and enthusiastically elected president of the SBC, our first African-American president.
It was exciting to be part of this great celebration.
But before we break our arms patting ourselves on the back, the job isn’t done. If we view this as the finish line, we will have erred. This is a step in the process. A good step. A big step. But just a step.
I had a thought this week. The next major step in racial reconciliation will be when black men are regularly considered as candidates for and pastors of predominantly white church.
The biggest step is when the designation of a person excludes entirely their race.
I agree with Brandon, the whole “first African-American president” line I am reading everywhere isn’t necessary.
That was a great moment! A standing ovation with strong applause as Fred Luter humbly accepts our highest office through tears!
Congrats, SBC.
I knew it would be a significant moment but I did not expect the emotion that I witnessed or the emotion I felt.
I will always remember this moment. I am glad that I lived to see it and was honored to be a part of this vote.
I love God’s timing: Fred Outer elected pres of the SBC on Juneteenth, June 19, the oldest celebration commemorating the of slavery in the US.
