Robert P. George is the McCormick Chair of Jurisprudence at Princeton University and the Founding Director of the James Madison Program.
He is discussing Daniel Patrick Moynahan’s views on the breakdown of the home in black communities. This is one of several TED talks being filmed. Far more academic as you might imagine, but solid. He spoke of the consequences of family breakdown within minority community.
“You want to rebuild equality? Rebuild the marriage culture in our society!”
Single mothers are heroic in their work. But the family is the core character forming institution. What do you expect to see when the family breaks down? We see problems as economic, social and political. But this is also a soul problem.
If you buy into the ideology of “a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle” you will not solve issues.
If you simply tell poor people to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, you will not solve issues.
It’s more complex than the simplistic solutions of either the left or right. But the key is the rebuilding of the family.
Moynahan- recovery and rebuilding of the marriage-based family is the key.
