Preachers like to talk smack about sports. So, here it is. I only ask that we observe a few basic rules of Christian dignity.
1) No trashing the Yankees. Such wickedness is not permitted. Saying nice things about the Boston Devil Sox is considered under the same rule.
2) SEC fans should show some humility – schools like those in the Big-10 spend our money providing an education for our students and so we are not able to pay our football players as you do yours. It is difficult for amateur conferences made up of students who actually attend class to be forced to compete with professional leagues like the SEC.
3) Ohio State fans, fair warning – we probably won’t be too gentle with you.
4) There should be little or no discussion of such meaningless things as preseason NFL football. It’s stupid to watch and talk about that nonsense.
5) However, praising Tim Tebow is permitted.
6) If someone wishes to talk about Big-12 Football, fine. But let’s try to keep our focus on major college conferences, not those mid majors like the Big 12.
7) Other rules will be added according to my mood – with not even a single thought of fairness.
I’m praying that God will use the Montana Grizzlies to teach the Tennessee Volunteers some humility today. Go Griz! Up With Montana, Boys!
Who are the Montana Grizzlies?
Tennessee tames the Griz, 42-16
“Statistically, the game was closer than the final score. Montana piled up 346 yards to Tennessee’s 440. Montana’s defense against the run was a bright spot. The Vols managed just 129 yards on 45 attempts.”
Squirrel,
The game was not even close. I watched it. The Vols dominated every facet of the game, except for the one, big, pass play, where our freshman CB got burnt. And, you are right about the Grizz stopping the Vols running game. I expected more from our young, talented, O line than that. That’s concerning. I hope that the Grizz’s D line was just that good, and not the other way around.
But anyway, the Grizz got their big check from the game….probably the biggest amount they’ll make all year.
David
I believe its an NAIA Division 7 school.
Twice NCAA FCS (I-AA) National Champions. That’s who the Montana Grizzlies are!
I had forgotten they were FCS. Good job to them!
Besides, anyone that beats Tennessee, except the Yankees, is good.
It’s the local high school in Squirrel land.
#1: under the freedom of conscience, I shall speak only the truth regarding any teams from
New YorkBoston. Including the evil AL Baseball team.#2: Regarding rumors about the SEC: it is not true that if you drive through an SEC campus with your windows rolled down, they will throw a diploma in the window. You have to stop.
#3: Big 10 education is great. Except that there’s 12 teams in the Big 10, which makes as much sense as 10 teams in the Big 12.
You obviously had an error in your comment, Doug. I went ahead and made the correction for you. You do NOT have to say thank you.
I spoke ex cathedra in my comment. Thou shalt not edit.
When I get a minute, I’ll go back in and undo the edit. When I get a minute, or two…as soon as I can…when I get around to it. Pinkie Swear. Scouts honor.
Sure. Kind of like when I’ll think about moving to Iowa.
Pope Dougie hath spoken.
I can see why we’re not allowed to trash the Yankees, bandwagon fans are touchy like that.
remember, Bill, as Doug was reminded, I have the power to edit your comments at will – and the willingness to make anti-Yankees look bad.
FYI – I’ve been a Yankee fan since about 1961 – watching with my dad. Through thick and thin.
Bill, some wonderful people I know have horrendous taste in sports—be it Dave, any of these loons that put “Roll Tide” on anything, or others—
It’s not quite a “picket fence” doctrine, but it’s a “you eat last at the neighborhood barbecue” opinion.
I know, this was more a slap at the people walking around north Louisiana with Yankees gear on and, even more conspicuous, Texas Rangers gear.
I’ve been a LA Dodgers fan since around 1986 or so. So right now, I’m sure you’d all understand my touchiness…:)
…and outright anger towards the owner.
North Louisiana?
Go ULM!
Dodgers are for sale. Maybe you can contact the Nigerian guy that keeps emailing me about money, and get the down payment.
Doug, perhaps we should stick to discussing more mundane New York oriented topics, like the weather. I’ll start:
At Yankee Stadium, the clouds are moving arrogantly across the sky and everyone thinks they’re over-rated.
Dave, how’d you become a Yankees fan?
I assume it’s like most of us… we like the team(s) our dad liked; or the one that was always on TV? It seems that many my age are NFL Cowboys fans, Steelers, or Bears fans.
Yep. My dad is perhaps the most obnoxious, boisterous an annoying Yankee fan in the world. I hope someday to achieve the level of fanaticism he has attained.
Dave, I can’t help but like the Cowboys. My dad likes them; and we watched them all the time.
Fond memories.
Watching the Cowboys is like watching a soap opera, lots of drama while nothing substantive happens…
Big-10 money is spent on the Fine Arts Education. You know, Tattoo 101, 102, 201….
I think that in Iowa City, a lot of it goes to support local establishments that serve the beverages-that-shall-not-be-named.
Frappucino?
I hate that stuff…
That’s the beverage-that-cannot-be-spelled.
Different beverage.
ummm, I dont there is a Big 12 Conference anymore…I believe they changed the name to the Longhorn-Sooner Conference; didnt they?
Also, its hard to be humble about the SEC Conference.
Thirdly, its a known fact, and it has to be in the Bible somewhere, that people pass over Neyland Stadium after they die, before going to Heaven.
Fourthly, we’re gonna grilll Grizzly today for our tailgate party.
David
PS. Howl, Smokey, howl! Go Vols!
No surprise that the Vols beat the Griz, but I noticed that nobody was smiling on the Tennessee sideline after the first quarter, and the crowd had gotten really quiet, too. I don’t think the Griz were the “powderpuff” opponent they were expecting, huh?
Thanks for the scrimmage, next week’s for real!
Does the “passing over Neyland Stadium” bit refer to purgatory?
Jeremy,
🙂 no…instead its a little taste of Heaven before you get there! For those going the other direction, it’s a little taste of what you’re gonna be missing!
David
When any of you guys have a college team approaching the greatness of 7…that’s 7…national championships in college football, then you may posit yourselves as better than the Oklahoma Sooners. Until that happens, please take a seat in the back of the class. We will be driving the bus this season.
OOOOOOOOOOOOO (klahoma)
SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS (tate)
UUUUUUUUUUUUUU (niversity) [So as to not be confused with that other “the” Ohio State-pen University]
GO POKES!! ORANGE (which ain’t ‘rocky orange’) POWER!!!
This song, “All By Myself,” is dedicated to the Texas A & M Aggies, a team without a conference. Let the self-loathing begin.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iCPewExEho
I think that soon, Texas might be the team that has a TV contract but no conference.
The universe is our conference. Listen to Matthew McConaughey:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cc8ElBhLje4
…oh, and I always love hearing:
YANKEES WIN! THAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA YANKEES WIN!
..and I just don’t see how Vol can support the all-inclusive SouthernEcumenicalConference as they appear ready to accept the lesser aggies into their fold.
😀
We’ve got Vanderbilt, too. If we’ve got to play Oregon and Boise State for out-of-conference, we need a few in conference easy beat-downs.
I am a Texan who pastors in Oklahoma. This makes Texas/OU weekend very trying to say the least…lol. When I first came to Oklahoma several years ago I ran into a young preacher who said, “I hate Texas! The best thing that ever came out of Texas was I35!” I responded, “Yeah and 40 of your football players! I call OU the University of Texas at Norman”…lol
Barry Switzer used to do his best recruiting at the Texas Juvenile Detention facilities. When he would take a potential player before a court to get custody of him, he would promise the judge to take the offender to Oklahoma. Judge thought that would be a win-win situation.
How does it feel to minister in a third world country?
…and how ’bout those Texas ‘Baptists’ takin’ it to the Texas ‘Christians’? Chalk one up for the Big X–!
BTW, I’m all for my team connecting out west to form the T Boone-Knight Conference! 😀
Lets also have no talke about the Women and Childrens Conference…you know, the WAC.
Uh, Ryan, the SEC has won the national championship the last 6 years…I see no reason to think that it wont be 7….you know, as we say here in the South…the real national championship game is the SEC Championship game!
Go Big Orange! the real Orange…no that ugly OK St. orange…not that orange that looks over cooked…Longhorn burnt orange…but the real and original Big Orange! The Vols!!!!
So, ‘real orange’ is a faded sort of puke orange? 🙂
That’s right…no WAC…they got off the football boat first…and have never returned.
Vol it’s been the last 5 years. The 2005 champion was the University of Texas. The 2011 winner has not won yet. Auburn was the 2010 BCS national champs even though the game was played in 2011. So you’ve won the last 5 in a row not 6, still impressive though. Anyone who underestimates the SEC is making a mistake. But I’m still a Big 12 guy myself.
Vol-
That’s seven championships for one TEAM not a conference. I knew education in the SEC was bad, but I assumed you knew the difference between a conference and team.
Here is a simple way to understand it- a conference is made up of teams, in the same way a team is made up of players, or if the team is in the SEC, contract workers who lie about where their paydays come from, or funnel them through their dad’s church. 🙂
Hope that clears things up for you.
BOOMER SOONER!
I’ve been trying to ignore your gluttonous self but for you to desecrate the name of OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY……you leave me no choice but to drop the nuclear post on you….
beerwinewhiskeybeerwinewhiskeybeerwinewhiskey
last post was to Biff aka the tennessee moonshiner
Jealous much?
Let’s just remember who is #1…
BOOMER SOONER!
😀
‘boomer’=law-breaker
‘sooner’=land-grabber
Nope, can’t do it. No law-breaking, land-grabbing ZeroU support found here…unless they are playing the boys from down under (bevo steaks are good when roasted around a Cowboy camp fire!).
Hey, at least our mascot isn’t some pistol-wielding wannabe cowboy…
But I do very much agree–bevo steaks are darn tastey!
Scott,
Do I sense some little brother jealousy? When your team can’t win a game that counts, always resort to name calling. See you in Stillwater in December. We’ll be the team with the most points on the board. You will be the team with the biggest excuses on the message boards.
You can buy a stadium with T. Boone’s money, but you can’t buy a championship. 😉
BOOMER SOONER!!!
Scott,
The reason we’re bringing in the Texas A&M Aggies is that we felt sorry for them….you know, every now and then, we let a team from another conference get introduced to real football…we just hate for them to be so deprived for so long….
David
😀
Someone help me – does Tennessee still have a football team? I thought they shut it down after that Lane Kiffin thing.
They haven’t had a football team since the Colts drafted Peyton Manning.
I watched a couple of Tennessee games and they’ll be a midlevel SEC team which probably won’t compete for the SEC crown but could probably win just about any of the other conferences.
Even though I’m partial to LSU, if Tennessee had been a disciplined (read: seasoned) team, they wouldn’t have made the errors that gave LSU the game.
Tennessee is going to have to have a major coach before they’ll knock on the door again. Kiffens and Dooleys aren’t going to win the SEC crown in this day and age.
They won the first BCS championship the year after Peyton was drafted if I’m not mistaken…
Justin,
You are correct. The very next year the Vols won the national championship. We had some great teams with Peyton Manning at QB, but we never won a national championship with him. Tee Martin was the QB on the 1998 National Championship team…and he was a great player..but, it was really Al Wilson and the TN defense that won it that year.
Also, about Dooley….I’m excited about him being the coach. I think he’ll do just fine….just give him time….we already look a lot better this year, than last year.
David
With reference to your rule #2, it’s pretty hard for those around the SEC to be humble. The SEC has very little to be humble about.
🙂
True, they are one of the better professional football leagues around.
I’d rate them between the NFL and the CFL.
Of course, the other conferences require their players to actually be amateur student athletes, so it does give the highly-paid SEC players an advantage.
Dave,West Texas High Schools pay better than half of the SEC teams.
Seriously, if you were going to have to live in Alabama or Louisiana for 3 or 4 years, you’d want some high-dollar swag too.
Dave,
If you’re going to make that statement about the SEC players, do we have to remind you about the PAC-12, Big 10, Big 12, ACC, Big East….
Well, just about the rest of the NCAA?
Bill, the guy who paid the players in Miami (and is coming clean about it) leveled the accusation that the money he gave is nothing compared to the money that is being paid in the SEC. This is from a guy who evidently knows.
And, to be honest, I believe that NCAA sports, especially football are plagued with systemic corruption.
Wisconsin will welcome any interested parties to do their insufficient best to beat them in the BCS Championship game.
Wisconsin? lol Arent they a furry, little creature that lives under the ground?
David
Badgers? Badgers? We don’t need no stinking Badgers.
Surprisingly there are no Notre Dame fans on the SBC Voices site… 😉
Average IQ is too high here for Notre Dame fans to feel comfortable.
(groan)
Yeah, I was gonna post a ND joke on here, but in case any Irish grads came by I didn’t want to have to explain it half a dozen times.
Jeremy,
🙂
(sigh)
try to use your words, Christiane.
(hopeless)
lol…you’re cracking me up, Dude.
I love Notre Dame. The flying buttresses, the gargoyles—
Oh, you mean the college?
Sorry.
(where’s my aspirin?)
I think you put it down accidentally, and someone ran it 90+ yards in the other direction.
🙂
LOL (ouch, that hurts)
MIZ! ZOU!
And
ROLL TIDE!
So no one saw the LSU – Oregon game?
What sport?
“Amateur” College Football…
That game was in doubt until the lockout was resolved. They weren’t sure if the pro rules or the college rules applied to those teams.
If you took the dumbest 50% of all students in the Big 12 and sent them to the SEC, the average intelligence of both conferences would double.
And being from Texas, I never really understood the whole New York Yankees vs Boston thing. I mean, Boston, New York, Philadelphia – they’re ALL yankees once you get to the Mason-Dixon line.
Such words, comparing the Yankees and Red Sox, will simply not be tolerated. Light and darkness. Good and evil.
I’m sorry, I was just reading how many SEC teams invite Big 12 teams to be their homecoming opponents…
And Big 12 teams sure love cashing those checks with a bunch of zeroes after they get the honor and privilege of taking the field with any SEC opponent.
Bill,
Amen.
David
Yankees swept Toronto. Devil Sox lost two of three to Texas. Notre Dame got whupped. Iowa won (though they beat the Sisters of the Poor and Blind).
Plus I got to preach three times.
Not a bad weekend.
So Toronto is now clean of litter and debris?
Glad the Yankees did some community service work over the weekend.
The Vols won. Notre Dame got beat(they’re extremely over rated every year). We saw some incredible games over the weekend… Baylor beating TCU….Auburn coming back on Utah St. and others….
I’m looking forward to the college football season…
David
Any weekend where Notre Dame loses is a good weekend.
on this, we all agree.
Speak for yourself. By the end of the season ND will still be better than the majority of Big 12 and SEC teams and ten times more intelligent than the whole Big 12 and SEC put together.
Notre Dame used to be a good football program. Now they’re a wannabe.
well, there is one statistic that the Irish are consistently excelling in . . . they graduate over 90 percent of their football players . . .
some statistics are integral to the goals and priorities of a school, and some aren’t . . .
educational priorities may not lead to ‘victory’ on one kind of playing field,
but there are no real ‘losers’ in those kinds of schools
The IQ level of the SEC just went down by 12 points today…Texas A&M was officially asked to join….
🙂
And lowering the SEC IQ level isn’t that easy to do, Vol.
I know, Dave. I didn’t think there were 12 IQ points in the SEC.
Dave,
Today is Saturday. What do you do? You put post about Politics and Abortion.
Today is SEC Day in the Good Ole USA and you do not mention one word.
Today, men, women, girls, and boys can lay aside their burdens and engulf themselves in FOOTBALL. And if they are blessed to live in the SEC they can feel good about it and hold your head up high while doing so.
Let me help you in your decision as to who you should cheer for today Dave since the BUZZARD-EYES have gone the way of the River of No Return.
Feel good about cheering the VOLUNTEER-NATION on against the LSU-NATION. GATHER THE WHOLE FAMILY TOGETHER TO PULL FOR THE KANSAS-NATION to destroy the SOONER-NATION. Give a great booster yell for COLORADO STATE over the sports interlopers from BOISE STATE.
And give thanks to TEXAS A&M FOR running over the BALOR BEAR CUB NATION 55-28.
And last, but definitely not least, remember to cheer the SABANATION to a sure victory against the REBEL-NATION down in Mississippi later this evening.
Come on Dave. Get into the SEC spirit and leave those Iowa blues behind. Cheering for an SEC team will make you see the whole world from a better perspective. It will help you much more than sitting on the banks of Walden Pond looking at leaves, frogs, lizards, worms and such.
Can you hear it Dave? I can! It’s ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!
Dwight,
As to the day’s FOOTBALL scores, I would like to ask you something if I may?
Did you leap with joy when the future SEC NATION to be TEXAS A&M walked over the BAYLOR BEAR CUBS or did you let you Baptist loyalties taint your good judgement?
CB,
I’ve not paid any attention to football today. However, had I been paying attention I would have been rooting for the Bears.
Dwight
Dwight,
You are a Baptist preacher through and through. 🙂
BH,
Do you ever watch football? Are you a CLEMSON fan or a SOUTH CAROLINA fan?
Well Sports Fans,
The SABANATION just brought the REBEL NATION to an understanding of what the phrase “Program Depth” means. 52-7, TIDE wins. Can you say, ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!?
We are on our way to National Championship #14. And I just have to admit, it is lonely at the top. But we Sabanites are willing to be sacrificial.
I see that the VOLUNTEER-NATION failed in their mission to upset the LSU-NATION.
I know it is late for some of you folks, but stick around. Cheer KANSAS on over the SOONER NATION.
BTW, It looks like the Rangers will be in the WS.
