The SBC Executive Committee appointed a 22-member Young Leaders Advisory Committee to explore ways to engage young leaders in SBC life. Baptist Press reported on the council and their initial work last week. Quoted from the BP article, SBC EC Vice President Ken Weathersby said:
“The council is working to provide concrete ways for young leaders to actively be involved in the life of the convention. We want to know what steps we need to take to make sure their voices are heard and that they are providing leadership in every aspect of the convention.”
You can help by completing an online survey that will help the council in its work. You don’t have to be young or any particular age to complete the survey, the first question offers age categories up to “70 or older” so if you have a few minutes, jump over to the survey page and help this new group as they begin their work.
Happy for a guy in his seventh decade to skew a survey for young leaders…but maybe they throw out all the responses for the grown-ups and take what’s left.
These type surveys have questionable value because of poor design:
“3. In which area(s) of STATE Convention ministry have YOU personally seen the effectiveness of the Cooperative Program?” OK, I’ve seen the CP ministries of all of the options given but I haven’t seen the “effectiveness” of a number of them. In fact, I think they are ineffective. Does the survey expect a check for these or not? Is the idea to find out the level of *awareness* that survey respondents have or their evaluation of ministry effectiveness? My guess is that the former is the goal. Poorly worded.
Same question for Question #4.
Questions 5 and 6 are fine.
Question 9, “…how appealing is the name “Cooperative Program…” is very good. I am interested in seeing the answers.
There are a couple of questions that might reveal some useful stuff. Since respondents self-select, this could easily be another puff piece where we pat ourselves on the back for the CP.
But…my response is in!
William,
I am concerned about the survey’s effectiveness as well. The main people who will hear about this survey or take it are already involved in convention life or believe in the CP. I am 26, so the bracket they are aiming for, and I only know about it because I visit this site.
With that said, thanks Brent for sharing.
The biggest variable in this for me was regarding local associations. My association had a lot of negative CBF involvement, so most of the association took their funds straight to the state or national level. It is on the up swing now. So my experience was bad, but I’m sure a lot of associations are good.
By most of the association, I meant the churches who didn’t want to be involved.
