Nathan Finn structures his essay on the Traditional Statement (TS) around two questions he puts to his “Traditionalist friends”: “What makes Traditionalists traditional?” and “Who are the New Calvinists and what have they done?” My final two posts in this series will attempt to answer those questions. Before I offer my response to the first question, let me make a few brief remarks about the answer Finn gives to it, which is, essentially: “There is nothing significantly ‘traditional’ about Traditionalists.” Finn’s argument against the name boils down to these two assertions: (1) Calvinism … [Read more...] about Response to Nathan Finn, Part 3: What Makes a Traditionalist Traditional? Romans 9, Calvinism, Traditionalism (by David R. Brumbelow)
In Romans 9 God says, "Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated." Romans 9 is one of the Calvinists’ favorite chapters. They refer to it often and believe it refers to personal salvation. They use it against Traditionalists or non-Calvinists. Some say Traditionalists have no answer to this obviously Calvinistic Scripture, or that they don‘t believe it. One joked a couple of years ago about how a Traditionalist tore Romans 9 out of his Bible. We have even been accused of not believing in inerrancy because we do not agree with their interpretation of this passage. The answer to Romans 9, … [Read more...] about Romans 9, Calvinism, Traditionalism (by David R. Brumbelow)
The Tip of the Calvinist/Traditionalist debate
I have always believed that most issues come down to a core root or issue. When you really start to cut things away and tear through the history, the baggage, the wording, the hurts and the fights, there is a point, a tip if you will that set the whole thing off. As I was traveling this week too and from World Changers, I questioned, what is that point in the current debate? There is so much overlap, and then some much fighting over what seems to be rhetoric, what is the splinter? Now, I have some presuppositions of my own, and most of you know them. I have written about my concept of … [Read more...] about The Tip of the Calvinist/Traditionalist debate
The Traditional Southern Baptist (by Drew Wales)
Drew Wales blogs at SBC Heritage Last week, a document was released that generated so much traffic websites crashed. I disagree with many points in the document and I have seen some very well crafted responses to the errors and misrepresentations contained in the document. Eric Hankins’ document does not get to the heart of what it means to be a “traditional” Southern Baptist. The theological position in the document is nothing new so there was little concern on my part with positions brought forward, but I am concerned with the divisive nature of the document. Here is why I disagree with … [Read more...] about The Traditional Southern Baptist (by Drew Wales)
I Am A Traditionalist
In an ironic twist, there is a new name I can fully embrace this summer in New Orleans. As most readers at SBC Voices might assume, I have already signed A Statement of the Traditional Southern Baptist Understanding of God's Plan of Salvation. It describes, in a manner completely consistent with The Baptist Faith and Message, the soteriological position I hold dear and boldly proclaim. By drafting the statement, the authors have provided at least one service to Southern Baptists that I believe should not go unnoticed, and it is in the area of nomenclature. While this may not have been their … [Read more...] about I Am A Traditionalist
It’s Deja Vu All Over Again – The Traditional/Contemporary Battle Flares Again!
You are probably aware that a new controversy has broken out about the future of the SBC. Actually, no. A very long-standing conflagration has burst forth from the depths again. For many years, the SBC has been a traditionalist haven. The Pastor's conference was one white man in a blue suit followed by another white man in a blue suit followed by another white man in a blue. They preached typical traditional Southern Baptist sermons - always alliterated as God intended! There is a new breeze blowing in the SBC. This year at the SBC Pastor's Conference, you will probably see more … [Read more...] about It’s Deja Vu All Over Again – The Traditional/Contemporary Battle Flares Again!

Nine Takeaways from LifeWay’s Theology Report (Scott Douglas)
It's fitting to write this while our church is hosting a weekly homeschool community through Classical Conversations. CC's motto is "To Know God and make Him known." It permeates everything they do. I hear my wife singing to her group of "Apprentices" about the Boston Tea Party and the class directly across the hall is using a clap/stomp beat to learn Latin. At the core of the CC curriculum is knowing God, who is the author of Truth and has revealed Himself to us. Recently the 2020 State of American Theology report was released by Lifeway Research. For research nerds this was like Christmas … [Read more...] about Nine Takeaways from LifeWay’s Theology Report (Scott Douglas)
What’s up with this #FillTheTank Challenge from President Greear?
On August 12th our SBC President, JD Greear issued a challenge to our convention of churches. Although the genesis of this emphasis is nothing new to old-school SBC’ers, this renewed initiative might be new to the younger guys and gals involved in our cooperative effort. No doubt, from the time Adam skinned his first rabbit to fashion extra bloomers for he and Eve, the Southern Baptist Convention has had a “Baptism Sunday” chiseled onto its annual Calendar of Activities. Baptism (the mode, the methodology and the meaning) is important to us low-church Protestants in a way that not much else … [Read more...] about What’s up with this #FillTheTank Challenge from President Greear?
