This year’s SBC Pastor’s Conference is June 11-12 in Phoenix, Arizona. The conference will feature 12 preachers who all come from average-size SBC churches. They will be preaching through the book of Philippians over the course of the two day conference. As you know, the speakers for the conference met at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary for a colloquium back in February. The speakers gathered to get to know one another and study Philippians with Dr. David Allen and other preaching faculty members from SWBTS and NOBTS. I had the privilege of attending the colloquium, and one … [Read more...] about SBC PC: A Video Interview with Chris Davis
Think Like a Church Planter
There's something I've noticed about my church planting friends. They work hard. They are constantly knocking on doors, hosting outreach events in their community, and teaching people the Bible wherever they go. Sometimes I get tired just reading their Facebook posts. There's something I've noticed about my friends who pastor established churches. They work hard. They are constantly visiting someone in the hospital, attending a committee meeting, and preparing for Bible study. I can relate to the busyness of ministry. Look. I'm not trying to knock established churches. I'm not … [Read more...] about Think Like a Church Planter
Pastor Billy Bob thinks Bobby Baptist is wrong
On Wednesday, I read an article by Brad Reynolds on the Christian Index website called Bobby Baptist and the ERLC. Dr. Reynolds begins the article by reminding his readers of the well-known sermon, "A Baptist and his Bible," preached by Dr. Jerry Vines. In that sermon Dr. Vines referred to a fictional Southern Baptist named Billy Baptist. Reynolds plays off of Dr. Vines' Billy Baptist and introduces his readers to Billy's younger brother Bobby Baptist. Bobby is in Reynolds' words, "a twenty-first century hypothetical typical member of a Southern Baptist rural church." Upon reading the … [Read more...] about Pastor Billy Bob thinks Bobby Baptist is wrong

What are you doing for Easter?
It appears that our contributors around here are either feast or famine. Last week I had lots of things to post. This week the queue is empty. So here I am trying to come up with something to post. Easter is such an exciting time in the life of a church. While every Sunday is a celebration of the resurrection, Easter is a special day set aside to focus on the resurrection of Jesus. Celebrate our resurrected Savior. What a great thing for the church to do! I thought I would share with you what our church is doing for Easter and ask you what your church is doing. It may be a little … [Read more...] about What are you doing for Easter?

Steve Gaines Comments on ERLC/Moore Unity Statement
On Monday the Executive Committee of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission and its President Russell Moore released a statement entitled "Seeking Unity in the Southern Baptist Convention." Brent Hobbs wrote a post here at SBC Voices extracting some of the most notable quotes from the statement. Baptist Press has now released an article with quotes from SBC President Steve Gaines in response to the ERLC statement. I was encouraged by his comments, and wanted to pass them along here. Quotes from Steve Gaines (emphasis mine): "I am grateful for the statement from Dr. Russell … [Read more...] about Steve Gaines Comments on ERLC/Moore Unity Statement
SBC PC: Brent Hobbs Answers Some Questions about Jose Abella
Editor’s Note: Each of the speakers for this year’s SBC Pastor’s Conference in Phoenix, AZ was nominated by someone. I have asked each speaker’s nominator to answer a few questions about the person they nominated. Jose Abella of Providence Road Church in Miami, FL was nominated by Brent Hobbs. Below are Brent's responses to the questions I sent him. How did you know José and why did you nominate him? I had never met José Abella before the Pastors’ Conference nomination process. Someone about a year or two ago had mentioned José’s name to me — that he was a pastor in Miami doing a … [Read more...] about SBC PC: Brent Hobbs Answers Some Questions about Jose Abella
Last Week in SBC Tweets
I am testing a new thing here at SBC Voices. At the beginning of each week, we will publish a post containing some interesting or notable tweets from the previous week.
