I had the privilege of attending the Evangelicals for Life Conference in Washington, DC last week. The conference was put on by Focus on the Family and our own Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission. The conference is a relatively new annual conference that is held each year on the days surrounding the annual March for Life. I was challenged and encouraged by the conference and hope to be able to attend again in the future. Below are a few brief observations from #EFL2018. 1. Progress is being made in the fight against abortion. No, Roe vs. Wade has not been overturned. Abortion is … [Read more...] about Evangelicals for Life: Some Brief Reflections
Andy Savage, Sexual Assault, and the Church
Let’s keep talking about sexual assault. We must. The problem is pervasive. It is not just Hollywood. It is not just Washington, DC. It’s the church too. Hence the #churchtoo hashtag on Twitter. While I maintain my point from my article on Monday, that only the church has the answer to a culture that lacks any concept of sexual morality, the reality is that the church has far too often been part of the problem. I had never heard of Andy Savage until late last week when Jules Woodson came forward and I began to see links to her story on Twitter. I read in horror. Ms. Woodson was … [Read more...] about Andy Savage, Sexual Assault, and the Church
Hollywood, Sexual Assault, and Last Night’s Golden Globes
Last night was the Golden Globe Awards. I am of all men the least qualified to opine on the worthiness of the winners. I have no list of losers who were robbed. I don't even know who the winners and losers were. I haven't looked. Truth be told, as I scanned the nominees for the various categories, I recognized very few of the names and have not seen the vast majority of the movies. My wife loves moves. Me? Not so much. The movie better have a great story line with lots of drama and suspense if it is going to maintain my attention past an hour and a half. I find that most movies are … [Read more...] about Hollywood, Sexual Assault, and Last Night’s Golden Globes
It’s Just Not Safe – Reflections on the Massacre in Sutherland Springs
It's just not safe. Those are the words I recently heard from a man I invited to church. We were hosting our Fall Festival at a central location in the community. As I went around talking with families and inviting them to church, some expressed interest in coming. Others said that they already have a church. Still others came up with some other reason why they would not be able to come. But one response caught me off guard. The man was a veteran. And based on our brief conversation, it seemed clear that he was dealing with some emotional and psychological issues resulting from his … [Read more...] about It’s Just Not Safe – Reflections on the Massacre in Sutherland Springs
With whom will you pray?
There was a lot of discussion on social media about a prayer gathering that took place in the Oval Office recently. Several evangelical leaders were present---including Southern Baptists Ronnie Floyd, Jack Graham, Robert Jeffress, Richard Land, Frank Page, and others. Ronnie Floyd was one of two pastors who voiced a prayer as the rest of the group laid hands on President Trump. Jack Graham did an interview on Fox News talking about the gathering. Baptist Press had an article about it. As you might imagine, reactions to photos and statements released after the time of prayer have been … [Read more...] about With whom will you pray?

Bible Interpretation and 2 Chronicles 7:14
I'm not sure I've ever met anyone who would say that 2 Chronicles is his favorite book of the Bible. Most of us only read through Chronicles when we are reading through the entire Bible. The genealogies and head counts aren't exactly the kind of things that stir within us a hunger for more of God's Word. With that being said, I imagine that 2 Chronicles 7:14 was preached from quite a few American pulpits this past Sunday in preparation for Independence Day. If not, there was a lot of Twitter debate going on this week for little reason. It seems to me that the debate included a lot of … [Read more...] about Bible Interpretation and 2 Chronicles 7:14
James 3 and Social Media Feuding
I found myself frustrated and disappointed as I read through my Twitter feed Sunday night. As I scrolled through, I saw high profile SBC leaders taking swipes at one another over social media. Some of the swipes were quite direct. Some of them were a bit more passive aggressive. None of it edified the church or glorified the Lord Jesus Christ. I recognize the irony inherent in a blog post "calling out" others for their attacks on one another over social media. But I think this needs to be said, even if those I witnessed attacking one another never read this post. The reality is that … [Read more...] about James 3 and Social Media Feuding
SBC Presidential Politics: Let Them Run
I’ve had this article rolling around in my head for several months now. I wanted to write it months ago, but I didn’t want to sound as if I was suggesting that someone should run against Steve Gaines for SBC President this year. My goal was to get it up in the small window of time between this year’s election and the time that people begin to talk about next year’s election. But it seems that SBC presidential politics are a bit like national presidential politics. The talk of “who’s next?” begins immediately after the current year’s election is over. Of course, the unusual circumstances … [Read more...] about SBC Presidential Politics: Let Them Run
