Another Reminder of the Necessity of the Conservative Resurgence
Several years ago I sat in an associational meeting where a trio of pastors sang "In Christ Alone." It's a wonderful hymn, and I was excited to hear it sung in our meeting. That is until they got to the end of the second verse where the song—as written by Stuart Townend and Keith Getty—says, "'Till on that cross as Jesus died, the wrath of God was satisfied." I knew the song and was familiar with the lyrics. So you can imagine my shock when instead these three pastors sang, "Till on that cross as Jesus died, the love of God was magnified." Of course there is nothing wrong with saying that … [Read more...] about Another Reminder of the Necessity of the Conservative Resurgence
Social Media and our SBC Annual Meeting
A lot could be said about the effects of social media on the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention. But my purpose here is to focus on one particular dynamic that I find interesting. I'm interested to know your thoughts concerning how social media has affected our meetings in this way. Our convention meetings over the last two years have both included contested votes. In 2016 it was the presidential election. We started with three candidates. No candidate received a majority of the vote. One candidate was thus eliminated and the top two vote getters went head to head. … [Read more...] about Social Media and our SBC Annual Meeting
Some Quick #SBCPC17 Reflections
I am on my way home from Phoenix after visiting Sedona and the Grand Canyon yesterday with my lovely bride. We had a great time in Phoenix. Our parents kept our kids for us, and we were able to spend the whole week together. It's always good to get away, but we are also very ready to be home. I can't wait to hug and kiss my kids and preach on Sunday. God is good. I have lots of thoughts rolling around in my head regarding this year's SBC Pastors' Conference and Annual Meeting. Hopefully some of those thoughts will find their way to this blog in the coming week, but I thought I would … [Read more...] about Some Quick #SBCPC17 Reflections
Resolution Condemning Alt-Right Racism Passes Overwhelmingly
This has been an interesting convention. Yesterday's events during the Resolutions Committee's report were a black eye on the Southern Baptist Convention. The resolution that the committee brought out today was an attempt to make things right. The resolution passed with very little opposition (maybe 3 or 4 voting no). Praise God for that. I will hopefully have some further reflections later, but wanted to give a brief update here. … [Read more...] about Resolution Condemning Alt-Right Racism Passes Overwhelmingly
PROPOSED RESOLUTION #10 ON THE ANTI-GOSPEL OF ALT-RIGHT WHITE SUPREMACY
You've read about the Resolutions Committtee's decision not to bring a resolution on the alt-right and white supremacy to the floor. You've read about a messenger's attempts to bring the resolution out of committee. You've read about some of the ensuing conflict. And you've read about the announcement last night that a resolution was being crafted on this issue. The full text of the proposed resolution is printed below. The resolution is scheduled to be voted on at 2:45pm today. WHEREAS, Scripture teaches, “From one man [God] has made every nationality to live over the whole earth and … [Read more...] about PROPOSED RESOLUTION #10 ON THE ANTI-GOSPEL OF ALT-RIGHT WHITE SUPREMACY
The 2017 SBC Pastors’ Conference Begins Tonight
Wow! I found myself in awe of what God has done in bringing this all together as we gathered this morning with the speakers and leadership team for the 2017 SBC Pastors' Conference. The theme of the conference is "Above Every Name." The goal of the conference is to lift up the name of Jesus above every name as we sing His praises and hear His Word proclaimed. That started this morning as Todd Benkert led us in worship. We sang several songs focused on the name of Jesus. The song we sang right before the message was one I hadn't sang in quite a while. It's words are over 100 years old, … [Read more...] about The 2017 SBC Pastors’ Conference Begins Tonight
