The Future of Southern Baptists Hangs by a Thread (by Malcolm Yarnell)

September 24, 2021 by Guest Blogger

I first noticed William Lane Craig refashion divine eternity and then adopt a heterodox Christology. Now Craig argues Genesis 1-11 is “mytho-history, not to be taken literally,” denies Genesis 3 records the first sin, and says cherubim are “fantasy.” He admits the genealogies give the early text an historical aura, but dismisses them as “artificial symmetry.” While there are certain denominations which allow for non-literal interpretations of Genesis 1-11, the Southern Baptist Convention has historically taken a strong stand against treating the Bible as “myth,” especially in the sense of … [Read more...] about The Future of Southern Baptists Hangs by a Thread (by Malcolm Yarnell)

Observations from a Task Force Member

September 21, 2021 by Guest Blogger

If you are a Southern Baptist, you need to understand what has just happened in your Executive Committee.  They have flagrantly defied the overwhelming will of the Messengers. A few dozen folks in Nashville decided they know better than the 17,000 Messengers appointed by the churches. Waiver of privilege was not something the Messengers delegated to the EC to consider in their discretion; waiver was a direct and specific command from the Messengers, and it was flouted. Please understand the implications of this. They have just opened up the SBC to MASSIVE liability. In every lawsuit against … [Read more...] about Observations from a Task Force Member

When will Rhetoric become Reality? (Southern Baptist Convention, we’re talking to you) – by Dave Pittman

September 19, 2021 by Guest Blogger

Delegates at the Southern Baptist Convention’s annual meeting this summer voted overwhelmingly to create a task force to oversee an independent investigation into the denomination’s handling of sexual abuse. The resolution calls for the newly elected SBC president, Alabama pastor Ed Litton, to appoint the task force, which will head up a review of allegations that the denomination’s Executive Committee mishandled abuse cases, intimidated victims and advocates and resisted reforms. And from the floor of the Convention, something happened I never believed would have. Someone, other than his … [Read more...] about When will Rhetoric become Reality? “Pray Or Die!” an Urgent Call to Prayer Dallas, Ft. Worth and the State of Texas (by Erik Vance)

September 6, 2021 by Guest Blogger

For those who don’t know me personally but randomly find me on social media, I often get the question: "What does your social media name mean? Pray Or Die!” Some people understand immediately and others find it to be a little harsh without a complete understanding. In 2006 when I was a college student in the Atlanta University Center that consist historically black colleges such as Clark-Atlanta University, Morehouse, Morris Brown, Spelman and The Interdenominational Theological Center I was invited to church by a peer. This service was different. This service was a prayer service. It … [Read more...] about “Pray Or Die!” an Urgent Call to Prayer Dallas, Ft. Worth and the State of Texas (by Erik Vance)

Suggested Ethics for Online Theological Discourse, Part 2 (Phillip Powers)

August 19, 2021 by Guest Blogger

In my previous post, I began to outline the general contours of a biblical ethic for theological discourse. The ability to discuss questions of theology and biblical interpretation Christianly, especially where there is disagreement, is a primary indication of a person’s maturity in Christ. However, in this current cultural climate, godly virtues like humility, gentleness, kindness, love, and grace are glaringly absent from most (online) theological discourse. As Christians, we are certainly called to contend boldly and vigorously for the truth, and sometimes this necessarily includes calling … [Read more...] about Suggested Ethics for Online Theological Discourse, Part 2 (Phillip Powers)

Why I Am Glad I Joined the Conservative Baptist Network (Greg Davidson)

July 21, 2021 by Guest Blogger

(Editor's Note: We often open our pages to counterpoint posts. Greg is an "SBC Voice" and even though none of us on the Voices team are CBN and generally oppose the organization strongly, we are willing to give opposing views.)  I am a California pastor who loves pastoring in the great state of California with some of the most courageous pastors I have ever had the privilege of knowing and serving alongside. This past year we have stood as brothers through persecution, financial distress, declining church attendance, and a spiritual, mental, and emotional crisis among our church members that … [Read more...] about Why I Am Glad I Joined the Conservative Baptist Network (Greg Davidson)

An Infant of The Conservative Resurgence (by Jonathan Raffini)

June 24, 2021 by Guest Blogger

I turned 40 this past year in the midst of a global pandemic, which we all know was a real challenge, but it also meant I survived a 40th birthday hoopla due to COVID. Turning 40 in 2020 also means I was an infant during the needed Conservative Resurgence of the 1980’s. My uncle was a student at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in the early 1980’s, going so far as to start a small group with friends his final year called “Seminarians for Biblical Inerrancy. When talking to my uncle as I prayed and pondered where God was leading me to attend seminary, he told me to be thankful that … [Read more...] about An Infant of The Conservative Resurgence (by Jonathan Raffini)

A Call to Unity (by Greg Davidson)

June 23, 2021 by Guest Blogger

I love Southern Baptists. They are some of the most compassionate, forgiving, and understanding people on the face of the earth. I love the fact that there are so many that hate injustice. I like others have felt the cruel tentacles of injustice. I grew up in the Jim Crow south. My dad was a transplanted Bostonian Jew who would not tell anyone that he was Jewish because he knew he would suffer from discrimination as he lived and worked in the Jim Crow South. My mother was an executive with a master’s degree in a company that paid her inequitably, because she was a woman, at a time when we … [Read more...] about A Call to Unity (by Greg Davidson)

Why the Loss for an SBC Splinter Group Was Greater Than Just a Few Hundred Votes (by Michael Linton)

June 23, 2021 by Guest Blogger

I know there is concern about the rise of Populist* Fundamentalism in the SBC and the push of a certain group to gain power. While this isn't going to be an exhaustive list, and I could be wrong in my optimism, I believe the tide is pretty obviously away from that group. It is also important for me to say this: I am a fundamentalist in the classic sense. I subscribe to the 5 fundamentals: the deity of Jesus the Virgin Birth penal-sub atonement the bodily resurrection biblical inerrancy So how was the agenda of the populist fundamentalist group repudiated? First, their … [Read more...] about Why the Loss for an SBC Splinter Group Was Greater Than Just a Few Hundred Votes (by Michael Linton)

Seven Reflections on #SBC21 (by Jon Glass)

June 21, 2021 by Guest Blogger

I’ve had the opportunity to attend 11 SBC Annual Meetings. This year was different than all the rest. It was the largest in 25 years with over 15,700 messengers. This was an historic meeting and I’m glad I was in the room. If you weren’t there and you followed along in the media, online, or on social media, it’s easy to find varying opinions and feel confused as to what transpired. At times it’s hard to tell what happened when you have to wade through the bias and perspective of the author. That being said, here is my perspective on what happened this week. 1. On Monday evening we … [Read more...] about Seven Reflections on #SBC21 (by Jon Glass)
