“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” Psalm 46:10
I have not come into an annual meeting less informed about what is going on in our political machinations since 2006. Life has pushed SBC intrigue into the background. I know Bart is running for reelection and longstanding protocol has been broken and he has an opponent. I know there’s a complementarian brouhaha or two, even though we are all complementarian.
I can get worked up over these things when I’m in convention mode, as if the kingdom of God hangs on the SBC getting it right. I care about a lot of these issues and I think they matter or I’d just walk away, but we sometimes just forget the basic truth of this verse.
I get a “verse of the day” from Bible Gateway. I don’t want to be too mystical, but this was the one for today, and it struck me as I prepared for the convention.
God acts to exalt himself and sometimes our best tactic is to trust him and be still. State our views. Advocate. But be still and let God do his will.
This week, I will report. I will opine. I will speak my mind. My ultimate desire, though, is to be still and to trust the God who is exalted in heaven, that he will be exalted over all the earth and over the New Orleans Convention Center.
