An Interview with David Crosby

March 30, 2016 by Mave Diller

David Crosby is the pastor of First Baptist Church in New Orleans and will be nominated for president of the SBC by former president Fred Luter. We have asked him the same set of questions we asked JD Greear and Steve Gaines. We thank him for his time in answering our questions. 1. Why do you want to be SBC president? I think the primary reason the convention exists is to help us do world missions together. Our distinctive as Southern Baptists is that we voluntarily join our resources to accomplish greater things for Christ and the gospel. I want to help facilitate the discussion about … [Read more...] about An Interview with David Crosby

“If I were 22 again . . .”

March 29, 2016 by John Roland

There is a series in LinkedIn titled, "If I were 22 again . . ."  My contribution to the discussion is below. I was soon to begin my MDiv studies at SWBTS in 1997 at the age 22.  At 41 years old today, my top 10 tips of advice, "If I were 22 again:" Be wise in marriage--Marriage can be such an incredible joy and add much solace to you. Seek a spouse to complement you in life but not have to bear the heavy burden of "completing you."  You are not there to make each other "happy." If you cannot make yourself happy, your spouse will never fill your void.  Find it in Christ for ultimate … [Read more...] about “If I were 22 again . . .”

Preface to a Resolution

March 28, 2016 by Bart Barber

In a few days I'm going to introduce to you a resolution that I have written regarding sexual predators in churches. I hope to introduce this resolution to the Resolutions Committee for this year's Southern Baptist Convention Annual Meeting. I'm taking the rather unusual step of offering this post as a preface to the post in which I will give you the actual text of the resolution. Why compose a preface to a resolution? Because I'm trying to anticipate the suppositions that readers might indulge about my motivation for authoring this resolution. We tend to interpret people's actions by what we … [Read more...] about Preface to a Resolution

Add a Cooperative Program candidate to make three SBC prez nominees.

March 28, 2016 by William Thornton

I suppose you saw the Maundy Thursday special by Baptist Press: David Crosby to be SBC presidential nominee. Crosby is pastor of a non-megachurch, one that is above the average Cooperative Program giving percentage: First Baptist New Orleans. One could almost sense that someone like him was sure to be offered as an alternative to the two mega-pastors whose churches give below the average CP percentage. Crosby's church is at 7% which is above the SBC average of 5.5%. The BP story doesn't include any Great Commission Giving percentage for the church but says "total mission giving" (mission … [Read more...] about Add a Cooperative Program candidate to make three SBC prez nominees.

How Religious Liberty Dies

March 27, 2016 by Alan Cross

For background on the religious liberty implications of the SC Anti-Refugee Bill, S997, I wrote about it here. How Religious Liberty Dies. S997 just effectively passed the SC Senate by a vote of 39-6. Churches and religious organizations will be held civilly liable for any crime committed in the future by refugees that they helped place and support in South Carolina in the present. 6 out of 8 co-sponsors of the bill are Southern Baptists. They know not what they do. Or, they do and don't care. This is unheard of. Churches have a biblical mandate to minister to these people. These are the … [Read more...] about How Religious Liberty Dies

The Bracket of the Second Chance

March 23, 2016 by Dave Miller

So, you thought your bracket was irreparably busted? Mine blew up in the first round when my selected champion - the Fightin' Izzos, went down in flames to the Middle Tennessee Whoevers. But there's good news. If you thought your bracket was bad, remember that the so-called experts of Sports Illustrated picked 6 of 16 correctly. Most of you did better than the experts! There's a SECOND CHANCE bracket at ESPN. Doug set it up for us and you still have time to get in for a Sweet Sixteen on busted bracket challenge. Here is the link. SBC Voices Second Chance Bracket. The password is the same … [Read more...] about The Bracket of the Second Chance

Campaigning for SBC President: It’s Time to Break with Tradition

March 21, 2016 by Dave Miller

It has been a long-standing tradition in the SBC that candidates for president of the SBC do not campaign for office. I don't know the history attached to this tradition, but I suspect it comes from a place in which we believed that such campaigning was a sign that we were not being led by the Spirit. We were not like those crass politicians out in the secular world who engage in unseemly campaigns. We just gather and get on our knees until the Lord reveals his will as to who should be our next president. Of course, reality has never met that sort of spiritual standard. Could we dispense … [Read more...] about Campaigning for SBC President: It’s Time to Break with Tradition

Why JD’s a shoo-in

March 18, 2016 by William Thornton

[This is not a serious post, something that shouldn't need to be stated. I am so stating for the benefit of my discernment challenged friends.] ...because we've got a JD-for-SBC-prez rap. It's unauthorized and unofficial but rap stars don't need any stinkin' authority or approval. You will find a lot of SBC leaders doing cameos in the two-minute piece.  Ther are already more views of the thing than than SBC annual meeting attendance...and, as we all know, the gray-hairs who go to the SBC annual meetings are all big rap fans. Steve Gaines has (yawn!) a traditional sit-down … [Read more...] about Why JD’s a shoo-in

What a Tragedy!

March 17, 2016 by Dave Miller

The site being down for a few days stopped me from instituting the new SBC Voices NCAA Bracket Challenge rules that we had ready to go. It's a shame - the new rules would have really spiced things up. The main rule change: You would have had to declare yourself either a Democrat, an Independent, or a Republican. If you declared yourself a Republican, you could win by picking as few as 40 to 45% of games correctly. Each week, the leader would be allowed a post to insult those who are trailing in the bracket challenge. Those who are trailing badly, after being heartily insulted, would drop … [Read more...] about What a Tragedy!

We’re Ba-ack

March 16, 2016 by Dave Miller

SBC Voices is back up and running. At this point, we've not been able to figure out for certain exactly what went wrong, but reports that a band of discernment bloggers conspired to bring us down are unconfirmed. Our crack staff off engineers (also known as our owner, Tony) got things fixed. So, here we are. It's probably good this site was offline the last 12 to 15 hours. I've been pretty discouraged and upset about the American electorate's poor decision-making and I might have written something YOU'D regret! … [Read more...] about We’re Ba-ack
