Is Calling Legitimate?

September 24, 2012 by Jeremy Parks

A few weeks ago, a post regarding calling and the IMB hit SBC Voices (found here).  A number of very astute comments were made regarding the nature of calling, and some hard questions came up.  All of that got me to thinking, so I went around and asked a bunch of international missionaries for their perspective.  Enjoy. _____________________________________ We actually began the process with the IMB before I felt 'a call.' Once my husband felt called to serve overseas, he asked me to pray about it. I fervently prayed for 6 months, hoping not to be called to a foreign place. I had … [Read more...] about Is Calling Legitimate?

It is Immoral to Spend our Great-Grandchildren’s Money

September 23, 2012 by Dave Miller

We are currently spending our grandchildren and great-grandchildren's money to make our lives better today and that is immoral. And no, Republicans, it is not all the fault of the president and the Democrats. It is true that the Obama administration has exploded the growth of the debt in unprecedented ways, but other than the Republican congress right after the "Contract with America" (in 1994 - and, yes, President Clinton cooperated in the effort) there has been little evidence of either party really caring about the debt. So, we have amassed a debt that is over 16 trillion dollars. I … [Read more...] about It is Immoral to Spend our Great-Grandchildren’s Money

II Peter 3:17 Four Imperatives of a Forward Looking Faith Part III (by Joe Blackmon)

September 21, 2012 by Guest Blogger

Editor: Joe Blackmon attends an SBC church in Tennessee.  He blogs at Hear God Speak.  You can follow him on Twitter @joe_blackmon_72 The Bible is a simple yet complicated book. It’s simple enough that there is truth that a child can understand yet complicated to the point that men and women have devoted their whole to the study of it and still feel they have barely scratched the surface of what’s there. Because of its simplicity and its profundity, the Bible touches all believers that study it. In fact, I would dare say that no one can truly study scripture, come face to face with the truth … [Read more...] about II Peter 3:17 Four Imperatives of a Forward Looking Faith Part III (by Joe Blackmon)

Do Not Forbid Speaking in Tongues (by Jerry Corbaley)

September 21, 2012 by Guest Blogger

Jerry Corbaley blogs at Think the Thoughts. I tend to agree with Dave Miller’s post on the ‘extremes’ of the Continuationist/Cessationist discussion. I am not at either extreme. I am not a cessationist. I am a continuationist though I am skeptical at times. I would like to offer the following exposition of several key Biblical passages and offer an application. I would appreciate anyone who can help me see the issues in a clearer way. Thanks in advance. “…do not forbid speaking in tongues.” 1 Corinthians 14:39b ESV To me, that is a very clear statement. It totally prevents me from … [Read more...] about Do Not Forbid Speaking in Tongues (by Jerry Corbaley)

Drunk with the Fascination of Success (by Paul Thompson)

September 21, 2012 by Guest Blogger

Paul Thompson blogs at The Bridge. (You should know on the front end that this post is heavily influenced by A.C. Dixion, and his "Ethics of the Theater"sermon (1905.) I highly recommend you read that sermon and let your mind consider all that is said. Let me further say that it would be critically important to hear all that he says and all that he doesn't say. It would be easy to conclude that he is saying that all theater is sinful, but he doesn't, he is arguing that the believer exercise caution, and in this post, I'm arguing that the church must seriously and soberly evaluate the use of a … [Read more...] about Drunk with the Fascination of Success (by Paul Thompson)

DWIGHT MCKISSIC DID NOT SAY, DON’T VOTE By Wm. Dwight McKissic, Sr.

September 20, 2012 by Guest Blogger

This article is an update and clarification of Dwight McKissic's earlier article. Under the caption, “Preachers telling Blacks not to vote is sinful,” Bob Ray Sanders published an article in the Fort Worth Star Telegram, September 18, 2012, that led persons who could identify me by description—not by name—to  believe that I instructed my congregation not to vote. That is absolutely and unequivocally not true. I’ve never and will never tell my congregation, how to vote or not to vote. As a matter of fact, for the upcoming election, I have encouraged the congregation to study the issues and … [Read more...] about DWIGHT MCKISSIC DID NOT SAY, DON’T VOTE By Wm. Dwight McKissic, Sr.

Words Worth Forgetting

September 20, 2012 by Thom Hunter

No sticks or stones have broken my bones, but words have surely hurt me. And I've never broken bones with sticks and stones, but surely I have hurt with words. Maybe it was easy in kindergarten to chant them away with a catchy limerick, but, it becomes harder as we grow and find that there are meanings -- well and not -- attached to most words, whether hurled in anger, served softly with a sob, uttered in exasperation, sighed in resignation, delivered with blunt accusation, wrapped in hope or enunciated with grace. Words are too often the weapon of choice. Words said to you. Words said … [Read more...] about Words Worth Forgetting

Message the Messengers!

September 20, 2012 by Rick

Recently, on more than one occasion, Southern Baptists have been encouraged to "Trust the Trustees" when it comes to the handling of our denominational matters. In response to that worthy slogan, might I suggest another one that I believe is more transparent, more consistent with congregational polity, and frankly, more Southern Baptist? "Message the Messengers!" Did we not form a Task Force to study a Great Commission Resurgence and report back to the convention? Did they seal their meeting minutes for fifteen years? We were told to "Trust the Trustees," or in this case, the Great … [Read more...] about Message the Messengers!

Jesus, So Much More Than a Gentleman

September 19, 2012 by Mike Leake

God’s a gentleman.  He won’t force himself upon you.  He will not do what you do not ask Him to.  So, you have to ask.  It’s your choice.  It’s your decision.  God won’t make it for you. I’ve heard those types of phrases numerous times.  This may surprise you, coming from a Calvinist like myself, but theologically I agree with those statements when it comes to the point of repentance and faith.  God doesn’t believe for us.  God doesn’t repent for us.  And He’s not going to take you kicking and screaming into heaven. So, yeah I guess in some respects I agree with those … [Read more...] about Jesus, So Much More Than a Gentleman
