August 31, 2016 by William Thornton

Here’s the Top Ten in college football. Not my ranking but that found here.

(1) Colorado

(2) Georgia

Notre Dame

(4) Kentucky

(5) Chattanooga

(6) Alabama

       Florida

(8) Hawai’i

(9) Kansas

Youngstown State

_______________

Any questions? Four teams from the mighty SEC.

This is the parody award, Fulmer Cup, that tracks the criminal achievements of various college football programs during the offseason and declares a “winner.”

Unfair? Perhaps.

I think a swallow of bitter realism on life in America is good for perspective. College football is super big bidness. Here in Georgia the highest paid public employee is Kirby Smart, whose job it is to assemble a group of super athletes who can fill a huge stadium and sell expensive merchandise. Smart is the highest paid state employee. His check for two WEEKS of work is more than the Governor’s pay for two YEARS of work. One could trot out the old saw, “Smart had a better year” but he hasn’t won a single game just yet.

The highest paid state employee in Alabama is, of course, Nick Saban whose $7+ million salary means his weekly check is more than the Alabama governors pay for the year. Some would say that the guv is far overpaid and Saban underpaid.

I’ll make the admission that I’m a fairly big football fan as well as a greedy capitalist pig. (As an aside, a family member is airbnbing their modest house for the weekend when UGA plays UT, $400+ per night, these people are nuts) Saban and Smart are paid well because they are productive and generate income. I could hear the roar of the UGA football game fans in my back yard as a kid. I was present, C. B. Scott, when Georgia beat Alabama and Steve Sloan 18-17 in 1965. True Tide fans are still whining about the ‘flea flicker.’ Still, I feel twangs of guilt for being a fan of such things.

One staple of preaching that I hear from colleagues is the entire genre of “Take Back Our Country” stuff that infuses far too many sermons. Perhaps one day we will be more selective in what arouses our indignation.
