Tom Ascol has a statement, here.
Here’s a word not in the statement: “apologize”
Here’s another word not in the statement: “sorry”
Here’s a word, used once, in the statement: “regret”
We regret the pain and confusion we caused by this unwise alignment of image and idea.
Not exactly a profile in courage or confession to speak of an “unwise alignment.” It was scurrilous. Glad he took responsibility for it.
I find the whole thing a calamity in our cooperative SBC family and this statement is not all that satisfying to me. I can’t ignore that one of Ascol’s guys buttonholed at least one of the abuse speakers at the SBC.
You make your own judgment. I’ve never been a strong critic of the Founders organization or Ascol. I don’t trust them, though, and if this degrades the credibility of the organization I’d say it is well deserved.
As with all signed articles on SBC Voices, this is only my own opinion.
…and put my resume in for that Hawaii church.
Thanks, William, for covering this. I was fed up with this stuff months ago, but I appreciate the updates and perspective you’ve provided.
Uhhh…the Charismatic, Contemporary, and Calvinism movements could not bring the SBC down, but the Social Justice Movement is destroying the convention! Focus on The Gospel and Biblical Justice will follow! Focus on Social Justice and you will be the Church of the Laodiceans! Everyone screaming to be heard! Their rights! Retribution! Equality!!!
Overwrought much?
This kind of “sky is falling” hysteria is a tired as it us false.
Well put Dave Miller. At least Mr. Williams didn’t write this under an anonymous name. He stood by it. 🙂
That’s a lot of exclamation points. I was unaware that the “Social Justice Movement” is actually a movement within the convention; would you mind detailing for me the clear evidence for its existence and how it is destroying the convention? Just to be clear, merely pointing out (potentially) incendiary reactions to (potentially) incendiary remarks doesn’t count.
“…and put my resume in for that Hawaii church.”
hahahaha
Just two weeks ago this blog published the statement from the President of SBU:
Here’s a word not in the statement: “apologize”
Here’s another word not in the statement: “sorry”
Yet there was an admission that the doctrinal position of SBU has been perceived as ambiguous and some generic language about fixing something.
Tom Ascol offers a very clear statement about what he’s doing and why and what he’s going to do and this blog isn’t satisfied because he didn’t apologize and say he was sorry for the trailer . . . The trailer.
This comment may well be treated disdainfully by both the author and most commenters here. That’s cool. I’ll continue to read and occasionally comment, as I have for quite some time. As I have previously noted, even when I disagree with you, I have found you willing to both post my comments and engage, which is laudable. That, however, does not mean you got this right.
The trailer set the tone for the whole film. Did you see it? The trailer was announced with glee by the Founders 4, Justin Peters, and others, It was announced weeks and days before it made it’s debut with glee from Tom and Founders.
Consider it treated disdainfully by me Gus. Good grief. When 9 or more leaders and survivors of sexual abuse , Kyle J Howard, well everyone who was interviewed, ask to be released from it, that doesn’t tell you anything? Like it’s a National Enquirer type documentary? William got this right. But keep trying to gaslight Gus, we know what all of us see is not what we see according to Founders and supporters.
This is going to be one blockbuster movie.
In related news, Twitter is abuzz with a confession by Southern’s newly named Provost that he’s a racist and a white supremacist, and that he will struggle with his whiteness until he is in heaven.
The video and an article he wrote have been removed from Southern’s website.
But you can see it on a Twitter, as people saved screenshots.
I am wondering if the Founders will insert this clip in the trailer or the movie.
Founder’s “debacle”? On occasion, I read their blog. I’m out of the loop here or I’ve missed something.
