This morning H. B. Charles, pastor of Shiloh Church in Jacksonville, Florida, announced that he intends to nominate Al Mohler for SBC President during the 2020 SBC Annual Meeting in Orlando. Dr. Mohler, president of SBTS, had been announced as a nominee for SBC President back in 2008, but eventually withdrew his name from consideration that year due to a health issue.
This is quite a bit earlier than we normally see nominations announced, so this is a little out of the ordinary in that sense. For many, Mohler seems a logical choice as he’s be one of the most prominent leaders in the SBC for many years now and has not yet served as President of the Convention.
Mohler will likely seen by many as a good choice to navigate what may be a difficult year with the 2020 national Presidential election coming up. Through the years I’ve heard arguments from some that entity heads shouldn’t serve as SBC President to avoid a conflict of interest, as well as other considerations. We’ve had entity heads serve in the role before and I don’t expect that specific argument will gain much more traction this year than it did at other times.
It feels way too early to be talking about Orlando yet, but that’s the news for today.
