He tweeted that bit of news.
Nightlife in Birmingham:
- Have a leisurely, gluttonous, triple-bypass BBQ meal (need recommendations from the Birminghamians for the best spot).
- Find a nice park and sweat profusely while watching grass grow.
- For Cals…pass the evening at the Good People Brewing Company. Cals are good people, right?
- Most likely, attend one of the ancillary SBC org meetings who now have time for more bragging and blustering than they did when they had to squeeze in a luncheon between SBC sessions.
- Sit in some overpriced coffee lounge and gossip about stuff with your buddies.
This is a welcome change that fits habits of the august messengers these days.
I like it!!!!
This change will provide more time for our SBC Voices dinner. People will form long lines for a chance to meet Dave Miller, not to mention William Thornton.
Was not a good look last year to have half filled room for IMB commissioning and a feeding frenzy of excitement for the Vice President. Glad to see everything moved to prime-time.
William, what is a Cal? ๐
Strange and mysterious tribe of SBCers sometimes known to imbibe. Generally lack a sense of humor also.
For great BBQ, Jim and Nicks. Also, very close to the Convention Center, there is a Topgolf. I haven’t been, but I understand it is a fun place to eat a burger or chicken before the members of your party take turns driving golf balls off your bay or balcony. Reservations in advance suggested. Alas, I will not be at the convention, as my wife and I are planning both an international mission trip and a thirtieth anniversary getaway. Have fun in Birmingham, and don’t miss Vulcan, our giant statue of the Roman god of fire and forge. It’s our… Read more »
Good to hear from you and I’m sorry you will not be in Bmghm. Anniversaries should be celebrated.
You are a funny guy:)
I’m all for eliminating things from the schedule as long as it’s not time for business that is being reduced.
But how do you feel about it? ๐
I like the change but haven’t seen the full schedule. When attending conventions with kids, the evening sessions were out. Now it doesn’t matter so much. Generally, coming back for the evening’ especially if you commute, is a grind.
As a Birmingham native, and BBQ connoisseur, my recommendation is Saw’s BBQ in Homewood. It is about a 15 minute drive from the venue. There is another Saw’s location in Crestline (Saw’s Juke Joint), also about a 15 minute drive that has a little bigger menu. A third Saw’s – Saw’s Soul Kitchen – is in Avondale. A smaller menu but in an revitalizing part of town. Saw’s has the best pulled pork in town. If you want ribs, just stick with DreamLand. For the best sliced pork, you will need to go to Full Moon BBQ in Homewood. Their… Read more »
As another Birmingham native, I say “Amen” to all of these. Saw’s is a must. I would also add Miss Myra’s (famous for their chicken and white sauce as well as their pies). Moe’s Original BBQ has the best smoked wings in town.
A 45 minute drive to the West will put you in Tuscaloosa, home of Dreamland BBQ. Best I have ever had in Alabama, and the one I take out-of-town visitors to. Open ’til 9pm. Of course, there’s also one in Birmingham, about 3 minutes from the Convention Center.
What do you mean the august members of the SBC. I thought the SBC annual meeting is always in June!!??
All my friends in B’ham swear by Miss Myra’s. I have been there…it’s good (this coming from a native of Eastern NC), but they can keep the white sauce.
Staying for the evening session is definitely difficult if you have kids with you. I’m interested to see what gets cut, though.
This change will also give all of you an opportunity to dive to Tuscaloosa and visit the Bear Bryant Museum. Maybe guys like Dave Miller and Dave Cline and Debbie Kaufman can watch some of the videos there and enjoy some โrealโ football instead of that little league stuff of which they are normally exposed.
The double A farm team of the Chicago White Sox will be playing at home in the Ham on Wednesday June 12. Great ballpark and really good baseball.
