Here are a couple of prayer requests from our IMB team in Japan. Take some extra time today and click here for the rest of the Japan prayer requests. Thank you for praying. Pray for the hearts of Tsu-san and Ji-san as they want to start reading the Bible together with Brandon. They are not yet believers, so ask the Lord to give them understanding of the gift of the gospel and that they choose to follow Jesus soon. Pray for N-san, a former homeless man and a two-month old believer, who had a setback when his heart was broken. Brothers and sisters in the faith reached out to him during … [Read more...] about Prayers for IMB August 21, 2019
Should we ‘Believe the Victim’?
I recently listened to a podcast discussion between two SBC pastors. The discussion caught my eye when I received an email about it. It was a discussion about the new curriculum put out by The Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission called Becoming a Church that Cares Well for the Abused. I was interested to know what these two SBC pastors had to say about the curriculum, so I gave it a listen. As I began listening, I quickly became very frustrated. While these two pastors admitted that the curriculum has some clear things to commend it, the discussion was not a thorough review of the … [Read more...] about Should we ‘Believe the Victim’?
Are you feeling called to Texas
Alas, I had prepared this vacancy announcement in advance, but when it came time to post it, I saw on the church’s Facebook page that they had just called someone to serve as pastor. Rather than let my work go to waste, consider this a "what could have been" if you had applied sooner. Did you know that the SBC website has church job listings throughout the country? Some of those vacancies could use a little extra advertising, so I’ve taken it upon myself to highlight one every once in a while (with a little humor mixed in). What can I say about this next vacancy? Not very much, it would … [Read more...] about Are you feeling called to Texas

I hope everyone had a great time of worship with their local church families yesterday. Here are some IMB prayer requests to get your week started, and if you want more, click on over to Prayers for IMB where I have quite a few more for you to pray over. Pray for all of our missionary kids this week as many of them have already started a new school year and many more are starting their new school year this week. Pray that they will develop good relationships, and their faith will be strong in the face of some very anti-Christian cultures. Pray for any and all of our missionaries who … [Read more...] about Prayer for IMB August 19, 2019
Words have meanings, don’t they?
Let's start with "woke." Stumble across this and you can guarantee that you're in a conversation beyond reclamation. Used by hipster wannabe crotchety old codgers blogging in their basements or some Twitter idiot who thinks he's an enfant terrible. I'll update my opinion on this to note that one on the SBCV team has explained how the term seems suitable for him. I respect that but still scratch my head over it. "Loath" and "loathe." Obviously, folks don't know the difference between the two. I loathe the Yankees, any peanut butter dessert, and the use of the words "woke," "season," and … [Read more...] about Words have meanings, don’t they?
Legalism, Liberalism, and the “Nameless Ones” (Adam Wyatt)
Several weeks ago, Christian author Josh Harris publically renounced his faith. Harris’ writings were incredibly popular with many in my Christian “bubble” when I was in college at a Southern Baptist College. He spoke of the importance of staying sexually pure in relationships through exchanging a dating culture for a courting one. In short, he suggested that it was far better to pursue marriage rather than pursuing dating. I agreed with him. I still do. Harris followed up his writing by becoming a megachurch pastor at the ripe age of 30, following noted pastor CJ Mahaney. Even though … [Read more...] about Legalism, Liberalism, and the “Nameless Ones” (Adam Wyatt)

Here are a couple of prayer requests from our IMB Team in Europe: Germany: School started back last week in North Germany. Please be praying for all our TCK’s who have started back, and for Team Hamburg as they build deep-reaching connections in the schools through a variety of service projects this school year. Ukraine: IMB personnel will be working with a US medical team in far eastern Ukraine. This will be the first team to work and minister in the area since the war broke out in 2014. Pray for the different aspects of putting together a team in an area where personnel do not live. … [Read more...] about Prayers for IMB August 16, 2019
I am a greedy capitalist pig, of course, but a Christian one
I knew I would be in for some interesting, and probably fruitless, conversations when a deacon strolled into church one Sunday morning with a hefty book under his arm. It wasn't God's Holy Word, large print with a thick, full grain leather cover. "Ah, Ayn Rand," I said, "that depressing objectivist with a dystopian vision for the future?" Yep. That was the one. "I love you man, but no thanks on us having much of a discussion on her material," I quickly volunteered. And, thanks, but we're going to pass on having a discussion class on her stuff in this church. Give me a little credit … [Read more...] about I am a greedy capitalist pig, of course, but a Christian one

Here are a couple of prayer requests from our IMB team in Japan for today. Pray for the Love of Jesus Church that they would be able to zero in on the foundational essentials of being disciples. Pray that they would each abide in Christ, seeking his presence daily. Ask for God’s grace that each may be devoted to sharing the gospel boldly. H-san has been attending church for almost two years now and as she puts it, she feels she must decide to follow Jesus or get a full-time job. Pray she will realize she can do both and pray she surrenders to Christ as Lord and Savior soon. Me-san … [Read more...] about Prayers for IMB August 14, 2019
Christian health sharing…or illegal insurance?
Some years ago when I arrived at a new pastorate, I was handed a health care "bill" by the financial secretary. She didn't know what it was and left it to me to figure out. Seems my predecessor made some kind of arrangement with one of the lay members to enroll the member in a Christian health cost sharing deal. Thus, the church was "billed" for a contribution because some anonymous member of the sharing group, not the guy in my church, had surgery and we were supposed to pitch in on the bill. That was my first exposure to a religious health cost sharing group. I ditched the bill. The … [Read more...] about Christian health sharing…or illegal insurance?
