Prayers for IMB Japan January 15, 2020

January 15, 2020 by Tony Jones

Here are the prayer requests for this week from our IMB missionaries in Japan.  There are more requests at Prayers for IMB.  Thank you for praying. Many Japanese are exposed to the gospel and relationships with Christians for the very first time while spending time abroad in the US for work or student exchange programs. Pray for three families such as these as they return to Japan, that they would come to believe in the gospel. DAY OF PRAYER AND FASTING for the East Asian Peoples and Japan’s city of Kamaishi. Kamaishi is a small, historic city located on the Sanriku coast of Iwate … [Read more...] about Prayers for IMB Japan January 15, 2020

Has “the SBC” ever blacklisted ministers?

January 14, 2020 by William Thornton

The continuing rancor triggered by Paige Patterson's invitation to speak at a church in Florida makes me ask this question: Has the SBC while in annual session, the SBC Executive Committee, any of the 41 state conventions affiliated with the SBC, or any of the 1,146 local associations of Southern Baptist churches ever blacklisted an individual minister? I don't know that any of these ever have taken any formal action to do so, the Convention at every level relating to churches not ministers. If any employees of these entities speak to the matter, they speak they speak as individuals, just … [Read more...] about Has “the SBC” ever blacklisted ministers?

Behold, the lowly parsonage…

January 13, 2020 by William Thornton

...that can't get any respect. I can't think of the last time I heard a pastor say anything positive about the fact that he lived in the parsonage. Maybe never. I don't see data on it but church-owned housing seems to have been declining for a long time. Younger pastors are aghast at the idea of being tied to the church by living in a house owned by the church. Each of the churches I pastored had a parsonage and my family and I lived in it because that was the only option available. For the two rural churches I pastored the only way the pastor could live on the church field, where his … [Read more...] about Behold, the lowly parsonage…

Prayers for IMB Europe January 13, 2020

January 13, 2020 by Tony Jones

Here are a few prayer requests from our IMB team in Europe.  The full list for the week is at Prayers for IMB.  Thank you all for praying. Australia--This isn't from Europe, but please take some time today to pray for those affected by the wildfires in Australia. There are families who have gone on vacation who have not been able to return because the fires have prevented their return. Pray for the firefighters who are battling the wildfires. Ukraine--Pray for believers in Ukraine who will be performing concerts along the conflict zone, IMB personnel who will be holding medical … [Read more...] about Prayers for IMB Europe January 13, 2020

Suspended & Silenced by an SBC Pastor (Dr. Susan Codone)

January 11, 2020 by Guest Blogger

Dr. Susan Codone is an "SBC Voice" - an active and supportive Southern Baptist. Her approach to this issue has been direct but it has honored local church autonomy. The church in question is free to do as it chooses, but she is also free to dissent and to put public pressure on that church when it does something that violates her conscience. Susan is a professor at Mercer University, an abuse survivor, a powerful voice within the SBC on issues of sexual abuse, and has spoken at ERLC and other SBC events. Here is Susan's story. Timothy Pigg, pastor of Fellowship Church in Immokalee, Florida, … [Read more...] about Suspended & Silenced by an SBC Pastor (Dr. Susan Codone)

Thou Shalt Not Lie: The ERLC, EIT, and George Soros (EDIT – Concerning Retraction by Hate-Blog Capstone)

January 10, 2020 by Dave Miller

NOTE: One of the chief offenders in spreading lies in the SBC is the Capstone Report, which anonymously publishes a string of half-truths and falsehoods, without conscience. They recently made up a story about Dr. Jason Allen that was related to his involvement with "Soros-funded EIT" and to everyone's surprise, had the common decency to retract the story when it was demonstrated to be false. They stand by their lies about the EIT and ERLC and show absolutely no integrity or Christianity in any other area, but at least they had the decency to correct this lie. It is a start.  I have heard it … [Read more...] about Thou Shalt Not Lie: The ERLC, EIT, and George Soros (EDIT – Concerning Retraction by Hate-Blog Capstone)

Already? 2020 and it looks like a very interesting year for the SBC

January 8, 2020 by William Thornton

Here are a few reasons why: We'll elect a new SBC President in sultry Orlando in June. It was announced back in November that Al Mohler will be nominated for SBC prez. The early timing of the announcement was an eyebrow raiser. Mohler quickly responded that he would accept the nomination. Hey, I'm just glad he didn't say that he would accept the presidency. Ordinary SBCers get to vote. He'd get my vote if I decided to attend the meeting and swelter it out in what used to be a perfectly good swamp. Surely, someone else will also be nominated. There's an announced candidate for 2nd Vice … [Read more...] about Already? 2020 and it looks like a very interesting year for the SBC

Quick Thoughts on the Yarnell Autonomy Thread

January 6, 2020 by Doug Hibbard

Before you interact with this post, please make sure you have read Dr. Yarnell's post. It's right here: Malcolm Yarnell Thread on Autonomy and Discipline Have you read it? Good. Now we can carry on. I promised you a post that you could comment on, so here it is. Before you get to the comments, here are a few thoughts:   Dr. Yarnell's post shows that it is entirely possible for other local churches to come together in our networks and organizations to place some accountability in front of each other. That accountability does not interfere with the autonomy of the local … [Read more...] about Quick Thoughts on the Yarnell Autonomy Thread

Malcolm Yarnell Thread on Autonomy and Discipline

January 6, 2020 by Guest Blogger

Recently, Dr. Malcolm Yarnell from SWBTS posted a Twitter thread on how Autonomy and Discipline can work together in SBC life, based on his experience and understanding. He has cleaned it up into paragraphs and I thought it would be valuable here for your perusal. Later today (or this week, depending,) I will post my own response to Dr. Yarnell's thoughts and that will provide the comment stream for discussion, accusation, and heretic-burning. Dr. Yarnell won't be able to interact here, so I am closing the comments on his post and you can yell and scream on mine later. … [Read more...] about Malcolm Yarnell Thread on Autonomy and Discipline

Prayers for IMB January 6, 2020

January 6, 2020 by Tony Jones

Here is the first installment of prayer requests from our IMB missionaries in Europe.  There are more requests at Prayers for IMB and as always, thank you for praying. Iceland--Workers in Iceland have a new teammate moving to their city to begin work with them.  The new teammate will be finishing up the necessary paperwork and logistics for his wife and two kids to join him in Iceland.  Pray for the logistics of their move and for them to find a place to live quickly, and that they begin well in their new ministry. Ukraine--Pray for a church along the conflict zone in Ukraine that is … [Read more...] about Prayers for IMB January 6, 2020
