The Great SBC Voices Thank-Off

November 25, 2024 by Mark Terry

I serve as the Wednesday evening Bible teacher at our church. We’ve studied Psalms this fall. This past Wednesday, I asked the folks to tell something they are thankful for. One woman said she is thankful to serve as an advocate/counselor for sexual abuse victims. A father told the group he’s thankful to see his children growing in their faith. Both of those impressed me. My little grandson, age four, attends the preschool at First Baptist Church of Keller, Texas. They did a Thanksgiving craft this week, and he said he was thankful for McDonalds. That made me smile, but I can testify that he does enjoy going there.

We all do well to heed the Apostle Paul’s instruction in 1 Thessalonians 5:18—“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (ESV) So, I thought I would provide our dear Voices readers with the opportunity to express their thanks. Of course, you can thank the Lord for something pertaining to the SBC, but you can mention your church or personal things if you wish.

I’ll go first. I’m thankful for Southwestern Baptist Seminary. I began my studies there 52 years ago. I’m grateful for the theological education the seminary provided me. I’m thankful, too, that the administration invited me back to teach part-time in my old age. I’m thankful for my family; I’m surrounded by people who love me. I’m thankful for my Bible fellowship group (Sunday school class). We have a wonderful fellowship. I’m thankful, too, for my pastor, Stuart Pendel. He is a good man and a faithful pastor.

So, dear readers, what moves you to give thanks?
