- The Baptist Faith and Message. What is an embarrassment is that so many SBC entities and institutions feel compelled to append multiple paragraphs and inferior paragraphs that were composed by a self-appointed, unelected small groups of Southern Baptists. No church has to affirm the BFM, certainly not approve or adopt any ad hoc add-ons to qualify as a cooperating Southern Baptist church. It’s been almost a generation since Adrian et al put this together. Time to start denominational WWIII and clean it up. Or, we can just ‘wink-wink’ our way forward. Some say we can rally around it. Hasn’t happened. Sub-groups rally around their favorite hobby horse in the BFM or add-ons but and fight viciously over those. That’s about it. I don’t know ANY SBCer of any persuasion who doesn’t affirm and accept the BFM. Find me one and post the quote.
- The Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood. Manly dudebros, what are you doing? You’re just another unelected, self-appointed, independently-funded ersatz SBC sub-entity. There are people involved in this that I respect but the CBMW loses every online boxing match, by knockout. Maybe they should retire or retread.
- The SBC Executive Committee. Assign blame as you will, but this entity generated such distrust last June that the convention would have voted to set up stocks on Honky Tonk Highway and put a few EC people in them. Staff left, lots of members resigned, but we’ve yet to see if this entity is sanitized and demonstrates sanity. Wait and see.
- The Conservative Baptist Network. Here’s the thing: I would think about being a member of this if they weren’t a takeover group and bent on the destruction of the SBC as we know it. I don’t see any other outcome if they are successful. No one knows who pens their official statements, some backroom web hack? At least they ran a real Southern Baptist last June, even if you disagreed and didn’t vote for Mike Stone (I didn’t). So far, no candidate officially announced this year.

But I’ve got bigger things to worry about, like Millions of palm-sized flying spiders could invade US east coast. They are already in my yard but there will be an arachnid apocalypse on my few acres. I will personally see to it.
BTW, Willy Rice is proving to be exactly the president the SBC needs. Nice first name and a solid, stellar pastor and leader.
And, there’s always something going on in our Grand Convention about which we are embarrassed. It’s in our populist denominational DNA. I am aware that the vast numbers of SBC members, even clergy, don’t worry about these things. Unfortunately, the ones who show up and vote do.
[Did you catch me putting my name in the title? Dumb and dumber SBCers equate SBC Voices with a particular person. He should enjoy himself without additional headaches.]
