Try Something Different at #SBC18: 10 Suggestions for Dallas

June 5, 2018 by William Thornton

  1. Go to the Messenger Orientation. It’s Monday, June 11  in the Convention Center – Level 2 , Room D221, 4:30-5:30 p.m. Augie Boto, SBC Executive Committee Interim President, led it last year and it was helpful and informative. Since he has additional responsibilities as interim leader of the EC, I don’t know if he will do so this year.  I have a report on it in which I mislabeled the event as “New” messenger orientation. Even seasoned old salts who have been to a couple of dozen annual meetings will learn something.
  2. Don’t greet folks this way…with a firm handshake, a ‘great to see you brother’ while looking over their shoulder for someone more important to speak with. Bad manners.
  3. Go to Baptist Night for the Texas Ranger’s game. Saturday night at 6. It will be in the mid-90s and high humility, er humidity. There should be high humility at our annual meeting this year for obvious reasons. We may have to settle for high humidity which is guaranteed. Go, suffer, feel better afterward.
  4. Lay off the free candy in the exhibit hall. Most Americans are overweight. Is anyone surprised that rates of obesity are even higher for clergy? Look around. My game plan is moderation.
  5. Drop in the Connect316 meeting.  June 11,Omni Dallas – Level 3 , Room Dallas Ballroom H, 9:00 p.m. They changed it to just a prayer session. I understand that registration is not required and that anyone can drop in to pray, come and go. This is a good move for this group. I’ll pass, though. Too late for me.
  6. Participate in the Global Hunger Relief Run 2018. Wednesday, June 13th. I’ll be with you in spirit.
  7. Be nice to protesters and demonstrators. But, you’re nice by nature, right, and don’t need a reminder? I believe we are looking for some of this.
  8. Presume that we are all on the same side…and act accordingly. Sometimes I have to remind myself that differences among we SBCers are very narrow.
  9. Leave a big tip…when you eat out. We have a well-deserved reputation for parsimoniousness. If you are on a tight budget, don’t punish the serve staff in restaurants for it.
  10. Pray about everything. Let’s face it. This has been a bad year for us and there’s a lot to deal with.

…maybe you have some recommendations.
