Continuous Improvement

August 23, 2013 by Doug Hibbard

Fearless leader Dave hath lamented, again, that we contributors are not contributing as abundantly as we need. He's right. I would plead busy but in truth, I have to plead hesitant. I'm working, offline, on a few thoughts on issues raised around here, but I'm just not sure I'm up for minding that comment stream. I do, though, have this to say. Recently, I read a book to review for Kregel Ministry. It was One Year to Better Preaching. This little volume contained more than 52 exercises to strengthen your preaching skills. I'm not going to give you a full review of the text here, because I … [Read more...] about Continuous Improvement

The Future of the Baptist Association: Spreading our Influence (by Joel Rainey)

August 21, 2013 by Guest Blogger

Joel Rainey is the Director of Missions at Mid-Maryland Baptist Association, an adjunct professor at Capital Bible Seminary and blogs at Themelios. This post, the second in a series, was originally published at his site. Here is the introductory post and the first post. There is much talk these days among organizations of all stripes about "de-centralization."  For most, this term simply means a spreading of a still-centralized bureaucracy to more than one location.  But the essence of whether an organization is truly de-centralized surrounds the location of three things:  power, personnel, … [Read more...] about The Future of the Baptist Association: Spreading our Influence (by Joel Rainey)

Encourage Passion

August 20, 2013 by Mike Bergman

Men, where is your man? Women, where is your woman? ~ Dawson Trotman, Born to Reproduce Discipleship is essential. In Titus 2:1-8, Paul explains Christian discipleship to Titus: older men are to be faithful and sound in character that they might teach the younger men to be faithful and sound in character; and older women are to be faithful and sound in character that they might teach the younger women to be faithful and sound in character. Too often I see in churches a failure to follow Titus 2. The excuse I most often hear: “Our generation just doesn’t like the same things the other … [Read more...] about Encourage Passion

The Death of Congregational Singing (by William Thornton)

August 20, 2013 by Guest Blogger

William Thornton is the SBC Plodder. Perhaps I am in the wrong churches to evaluate the state of congregational singing in the Southern Baptist Convention but I rarely find a church where it appears that there is much concern about the congregation, rather than soloists or the choir, doing any serious singing in worship. The whole assembly was worshiping, singing the song, and blowing the trumpets...   2 Chronicles 29:28a There is always music planned for worship that is called congregational singing but not much singing seems to occur. The choir, praise team, music leader, platform … [Read more...] about The Death of Congregational Singing (by William Thornton)

Bless Your Heart: A Biblical Look at the Heart of Man (by Ben Simpson)

August 20, 2013 by Ben Simpson

Ben Simpson is the pastor of West Main Baptist Church in Alexandria, TN and his blog is part of that church's site.  Helen Keller once said, “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched—they must be felt with the heart.”  We certainly live in a culture and day where the heart has been elevated to preeminence.  How many times have we heard someone give the advice, “Just follow your heart!”?  That’s the wisdom of the age, but it’s not just isolated to secular communities.  You very well might just as easily hear that from folks who claim to follow Jesus … [Read more...] about Bless Your Heart: A Biblical Look at the Heart of Man (by Ben Simpson)

The Evils that Befall our Ministry

August 19, 2013 by Andy Hynes

I was recently reading one of the prayers in Valley of Vision, page 336, as I do each morning with my Scripture reading. This was on the Monday after I had preached twice at our church the previous day. As I read this particular Puritan prayer, he gave some areas that he fell into. It appears that he might have often struggled with these. As I read them, I identified with all four. I was struck by the clarity with which they came off the page. I immediately thought through my last 10 years of ministry, and how each of these “evils” has been a part of my life. Below are the evils he said … [Read more...] about The Evils that Befall our Ministry

Young Whippersnappers and their Facial Hair

August 18, 2013 by Dave Miller

Do you think it is a sense of personal inadequacy that leads young whippersnappers to focus so much of their personal identity on their facial hair?   … [Read more...] about Young Whippersnappers and their Facial Hair

August 16, 2013 by David Rogers

A big thank you to any of you who may have stuck with me all the way through this entire series, which I broke up into smaller chunks in order to make it easier to digest. Now that all the posts are up, if anyone happens to want to read through the whole thing in order to get a better look at what I am saying in context, here is an index of all the links that will help you to do just that: Introduction Barrier #1: The Geographic Barrier Barrier #2: The Linguistic Barrier Barrier #3: The Cultural Barrier Barrier #4: The Social Barrier Barrier #5: The Spiritual Barrier Barrier #6: The … [Read more...] about Index to World Missions: Overcoming Barriers to the Great Commission

World Missions: Overcoming Barriers to the Fulfillment of the Great Commission (Sequencing the Seven Barriers/ Conclusion)

August 16, 2013 by David Rogers

Sequencing the Seven Barriers Missiology is not an exact science. For every rule, there are undoubtedly many exceptions. It would be a crass oversimplification to attempt to reduce the missionary task to a series of “easy steps to success.” However, this does not negate the fact there are certain logical sequential patterns in which efforts to overcome the barriers to the fulfillment of the Great Commission normally take place. At times, failing to take into account or intentionally going against these natural patterns may produce unfavorable consequences for the advance of missionary work in … [Read more...] about World Missions: Overcoming Barriers to the Fulfillment of the Great Commission (Sequencing the Seven Barriers/ Conclusion)

The Priority of Baptism

August 15, 2013 by Mike Bergman

Admission of members is…by one of the following actions: a) Upon profession of faith in Jesus Christ and acknowledgement of his Lordship, followed by baptism… ~ Constitution and Bylaws of the church I pastor Yet it takes time to manifest whether public professions of conversion are real. False professions are made most often by those who are sincere but wrong in their claim to follow Christ. Time—whether a few weeks or a few months—will allow the pastors and others in a congregation to watch and have their initial conclusions confirmed by the continuing discipleship of the one desiring … [Read more...] about The Priority of Baptism
