For those who are readers here, let’s talk about the SBC Annual Meeting in New Orleans June 19-20(?).
Are you going?
What are you looking forward to doing in New Orleans?
What significant actions do you hope we will take at the meeting?
Would you be interested in a blogger’s get-together (say, Cafe Du Monde) after one of the evening sessions?
I booked my hotel this week. I’m looking forward to it!
I will be there, Lord willing.
I’m looking forward to the questions from the floor. A certain question was particularly entertaining and even led to a new verb: mohlerized. 🙂
I’m most looking forward to meeting other Southern Baptists and watching history take place with Fred Luter becoming our next president.
Blogger get together is a great idea.
I will be there with Josh and I agree, a blogger get together would be fantastic.
1. Yes, I’m going, along with my wife and two sons. (We sort of turn it into a bit of a family vacation when not in session. The boys will participate in the youth conference — a mission project this year.)
2. I’m looking forward to eating my way across New Orleans–a muffaletta at Central Grocery, a shrimp poboy at Mother’s, etc. This will be my 13th straight SBC Annual Meeting, so frankly the reports and exhibits are like watching reruns. I enjoy the preaching, the worship and the fascinating way we orchestrate / conduct a business meeting with 5,000 people or more. It is the largest vote-casting, decision-making body in the world–much bigger than Congress!
3. Of course, it will be significant to elect Fred Luter as President. If the convention seeks to publicly upbraid Richard Land in some way, rather than allowing the ERLC trustees to deal with the matter, I believe it will set off a discussion sure to scuttle the celebration of Luter’s election and possibly contradict the idea of racial reconciliation progress. It will not surprise anyone who reads this blog that I would like to see the convention insist that the optional replacement name vote must require a two-thirds majority at two consecutive conventions to pass, reasoning that the proposal truly gives our blessing to a “daily, practical use” name change for the denomination among those churches who opt to use it. The fact that the legal name on the paperwork in the filing cabinet would remain unchanged should not impact our view of the significance of the decision for those churches who choose to replace our denomination’s name.
4. The get-together sounds fun, but it might be easier just to take a coffee break in the convention hall during the boring parts. Once we break for the night, I usually enjoy a little family time.
See you in NOLA–just THIRTEEN more years and we can open the box!!
Oh man…Cafe du Monde. Spending $200 on a 32-hr round trip Greyhound bus trip would be totally worth it to have that and a “Ferdi” from Mother’s (http://www.mothersrestaurant.net/mothers_menu.html)–with “debris” of course! (“debris” – all the good scraps and juices from their own roasted turkey, roast beef, and ham.)
If I’m not working, it’s a possibility.
OK, to rephrase Dave’s question: Who’s going and who’s hotel floor can I bum some square footage on?
I don’t know where you are coming from, but I just got an Air Tran flight from ATL for about $250. And it’s only 1.5 hours (though at least 6 more will be spent in some capacity at the airport – still that beats the pants off 32 hours for only about $50 more).
No, not going.
Nothing, but I will watch you guys on the livestream, so behave yourselves well during motion time.
Significant: don’t do anything foolish. Or anything that seals any other records for years to come.
Yes, I’d love to come to a blogger meeting. Call me and put me on speaker. It will be just like being a mega-church pastor via livestream.
Can we all chip in and get Doug a hologram?
I wonder if I could vote if I had a hologram present?
Wish I could go but I love my being married too much to go to New Orleans and leave my wife and daughter alone in NYC two weeks after moving there.
Dave,
Would u mine emailing me where u are staying, when y gave an opportunity. It’s possible Vera & I might want to rent a room there if available & near the convention center.
Dwight
I plan on being there. Bringing my wife (for the first time).
Look forward to seeing friends and hanging out with @sbcmessenger.
A blogger fellowship time would be great – but I don’t know if Cafe Du Monde could handle us given that the rest of the 5000+ messengers will be wanting to make their pilgrimage there as well.
As for what I am most looking forward to?
1) David Platt at the Pastor’s Conference – he was en fuego with the Holy Spirit at T4G and I am looking forward to more at the SBCPC
2) 9 Marks at 9 – it’s was great in Louisville
3) The Resolution on the National Christian Flag
4) The Resolution to boycott Pepsi
5) The words, “The motion has been referred to the Executive Committee”.
6) Bubba Gump’s, Cafe Maspero, Ralph and Kacoo’s, Italian Pie, Camellia Grill, Louisiana Pizza Kitchen, Voodoo Barbecue, Cheesecake Bistro, Lebanon’s Cafe, and if I have time maybe some Red Fish Grill or 5 Happiness.
I will be there. First SBC meeting since San Antonio. Would love to have a bloggers get together.
Excited about Fred Luter as president.
1) I’d love to go, but I’m taking off to India that week, so I need to prepare things at work for my absence.
If I could go:
2) Find some fresh boiled crawfish. It’s nigh impossible to find that meal outside of southern LA. And if #4 is right, then hang out with you guys.
3) Whatever is decided, that due reliance on God is first and foremost.
4) A get-together would be amazing. I wish I could be there.
