Christian Nationalism Is Water from a Tainted Well
On November 13, former Trump national security adviser Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn spoke to a group of evangelical Christians at the Reawaken America Tour, a church-based political rally held at Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, Texas. Flynn--and others--spoke about many things. Still, a couple of the highly noteworthy things deal with themes that are becoming much more prominent in today's Evangelical political culture that is heavily influenced by patriotism. First, Flynn used a very common analogy for the American experiment. He referred to America as the 'city on a hill.' This is … [Read more...] about Christian Nationalism Is Water from a Tainted Well
Thoughts on Ed Litton Via a Zoom Call
Recently, I joined several other pastors in a Zoom call with Ed Litton about his campaign for President of the SBC. Ed shared about his life and background and how he became involved in the Southern Baptist Church. His father experienced a dramatic conversion and was set free from alcohol addiction by the powerful witness of a Southern Baptist pastor when Ed was a boy. Ed says of his family, “We are Southern Baptist’s today because they came and got us.” Ed shared about his service in our convention in church planting and his leadership in Mobile through his church. He shared … [Read more...] about Thoughts on Ed Litton Via a Zoom Call
Jesus Doesn’t Want Us to be Hated For Being a Jerk
1 John 3:13 states, “Do not be surprised, brothers, that the world hates you.” In a wonderfully bold statement, John reminds us that we should not be surprised or startled if the world hates us. To hate expresses here an emotion of loathing coupled with malice. Some languages render it by a phrase such as, “not to see a person in the eye,” which means that one cannot stand that person under any circumstances. I do not truly understand why we are so confused when the world hates us and hates what we stand for. However, I think one of the reasons we are so shocked by this is that we do not do … [Read more...] about Jesus Doesn’t Want Us to be Hated For Being a Jerk
Why I Signed Up for the Vaccine Trial
Like most people, 2020 has been a whirlwind of emotions, confusion, and stress. Being a pastor during a pandemic has been the most challenging thing I have ever had to deal with. In the early stages, just trying to make a sound decision on when or if to stop gathering for worship was difficult. No matter what decision was made, I knew that I was going to be second-guessed by everyone. On top of those decisions, it was equally as challenging for many pastors to decide to reopen for worship: some thought it was too soon, while others thought that we should never have stopped meeting in the … [Read more...] about Why I Signed Up for the Vaccine Trial
The “New Normal” in a Post-COVID Era for Churches (Adam Wyatt)
Like many of you, I have been doing all I can to keep my church members connected during the COVID-19 lockdown. Also, I have been doing everything that I can to plan and prepare for an eventual corporate worship service. My church gathers this Sunday in a "soft" reopening that does not include Sunday School or nursery. While many pastors are getting ready to do the same things, I wonder how many things that have been typical of Southern Baptist culture will continue post-COVID. Below is a list of some of the things that pastors and churches throughout the SBC—especially the South—might … [Read more...] about The “New Normal” in a Post-COVID Era for Churches (Adam Wyatt)
