The halls are beginning to fill in the convention center. Plenty of meetings and fellowships are already taking place. We visited some great churches this morning. Our group went to FBC Famersville and/or Cornerstone Baptist in Arlington. The Pastors' Conference gets started in just about an hour from now. Here's are a few things I'm looking for over the next 4 days. Presidential Election This week the SBC will decide who will lead the convention as president over the next two years. (Ok, technically one, but the second election is basically a formality). We've made no secret about our … [Read more...] about What to Watch: Four Questions Before #SBC18

Breaking: Statement from SEBTS Administration on Internal Investigation & Patterson Documents
Southeastern Seminary has released a statement tonight responding to a letter from Paige Patterson's lawyer. The full text is below. Noteworthy: SEBTS asserts "there has been no evidence discovered that disputes or discredits our former student’s account" An internal review is still ongoing, awaiting the return of documents SEBTS believes are owned by the seminary. SEBTS still seeks the return of documents they believe should be under the SEBTS possession. No request for arbitration has yet been received by SEBTS, thus there's been no opportunity to accept the request. SBC Voices Down Much of the Day, 6/4/18
Our apologies for the significant downtime today. We ended up making an emergency move to a new web hosting company. We could tell the site was running poorly last night and eventually stopped working altogether for a few hours. Then by morning time the front end (the side our readers see) was functional and scheduled posts still went up, but we were locked out of any admin capabilities. Then it went down altogether. After some troubleshooting and work and talking with the hosting company, they explained what was going on. Because of high traffic and server load, the server had … [Read more...] about SBC Voices Down Much of the Day, 6/4/18
Trouble Registering Messengers for #SBC18? Here’s Help
We are receiving reports of some churches, particularly church plants, having difficulty preregistering messengers for this year's convention in Dallas. We'll talk about some of the reasons for that later, but first, we want to provide a practical guide for those trying to navigate the process of making sure you'll be able to fully participate in #SBC18. Step 1: Contact the EC Church Relations Office If your church wants to be involved the 2018 SBC Annual Meeting and is having trouble preregistering on the SBC website, it would streamline the process to contact the Church Relations office at … [Read more...] about Trouble Registering Messengers for #SBC18? Reflections the Day After Patterson’s Removal
Last night Southwestern Seminary released a statement that caught most of us completely off guard. The Executive Committee of the trustee board, a smaller group of the trustees, unanimously decided to terminate Dr. Paige Patterson effective immediately. Only a week ago the full trustee board had met in a long, likely contentious meeting that resulted in his removal from the role of president of the seminary, but with a visible continuing role on campus as President Emeritus, Theologian in Residence, living quarters, and continued salary. There was little focus on the executive board meeting … [Read more...] about Reflections the Day After Patterson’s Removal
Christ will Shine on You (Ephesians 5:6-14): From the Voice that Matters Most
We share our opinions and insights at SBC Voices, but we believe that the Voice that matters most is the one that comes from God's Word. We present these daily expositional devotions, beginning with a tour of Ephesians called, "Walk Worthy," in hopes of encouraging our readers to remember to Voice above every voice. Ephesians 5:6-14 (NIV): 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. 7 Therefore do not be partners with them. 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of … [Read more...] about Christ will Shine on You (Ephesians 5:6-14): From the Voice that Matters Most
To Publish or Not to Publish? Resolutions in a Social Media Age
Last Thursday, our own William Thornton helped potential resolvers by laying out the steps to properly submit a resolution, along with a few details on what happens after the resolution is submitted. Monday Resolutions Committee chair Jason Duesing provided an extended explanation of their committee's work and process in Baptist Press. If you're interested in the resolutions process and some of the more technical details, you'll find a ton of good info there. So you already know the official process. But there's a trend recently that goes beyond those official steps. More and more people … [Read more...] about To Publish or Not to Publish? Resolutions in a Social Media Age
What Is Happening in the SBC: Helpful Thoughts & Reflections
It's been a little quiet around here since Tuesday evening. We closed comments temporarily and thought it was best to allow things to settle some before jumping back into the conversation. A lot has happened on social media and these articles have been widely shared. I think all three are really helpful in thinking through and absorbing what has transpired over the last month and especially this week. Each one is well worth your time. The Wrath of God Poured Out — The Humiliation of the Southern Baptist Convention by Al Mother. Available at Mohler's website and Christianity … [Read more...] about What Is Happening in the SBC: Helpful Thoughts & Reflections
