It’s Friday, but Sunday’s Coming!

April 19, 2019 by Dave Miller

SM Lockridge. Published this six years ago. Thought I'd put it back up. Thought I'd throw this one in just for fun! I'm working on Good Friday and Easter. Then headed to Florida for a week. Unless the world falls apart I won't be blogging much. He is risen.   … [Read more...] about It’s Friday, but Sunday’s Coming!

Milestones at SBC Voices

April 17, 2019 by Dave Miller

I coached at Isaac Newton Christian Academy in Cedar Rapids for about 13 years, before I moved to Sioux City, both soccer (we were the dominant program in Eastern Iowa among Christian middle schools) and basketball. I kept track of stats and analyzed them. I still have the files. Numbers and statistics fascinated me. SBC Voices is coming up on a strange confluence of significant statistical milestones. Wordpress has analytics and I monitor them and noticed that several statistical boxes are about to be checked. This is in a time when we have been having a lot of discussions about the future … [Read more...] about Milestones at SBC Voices

K. Marshall Williams to Nominate J.D. Greear for Second Term

April 12, 2019 by Dave Miller

Baptist Press is reporting that Pennsylvania pastor K. Marshall Williams has announced that he will nominate J.D. Greear, of Summit Church in Raleigh, for a second term as president of Southern Baptist Convention. There is much solid information in the BP article. We have been thrilled with J.D. Greear's diverse appointments, his leadership on the sexual abuse issue, his promotion of evangelism, and leadership of the convention.   … [Read more...] about K. Marshall Williams to Nominate J.D. Southwestern Seminary: Painful Recalibration

April 12, 2019 by Dave Miller

Baptist Press carried an article about the trustee meeting at Southwestern Seminary this week, in with its new President, Dr. Adam Greenway, spoke of his desire to lead the seminary to "recalibrate and to reposition" itself in "every way to strengthen the core of what we do." Greenway said, At the end of the day, our core of strength is what we do right here on Seminary Hill. It is the experience that happens here in the classroom and on this campus. Theological education in the context of a vibrant, worshiping, learning, living together community -- that is of first importance. He added … [Read more...] about Southwestern Seminary: Painful Recalibration

The Never-ending Struggle of Ministry

April 10, 2019 by Dave Miller

I called to talk to Julie a moment ago to see if I could come by and see her father again. "Dad passed away this morning." It left me with a feeling of guilt that I've experienced often before. On Monday, my supposed day off, I got a call from the father of a man who used to attend our church. His wife's uncle (great uncle?) was sick and he asked me if I would go over and "lead him to Jesus." I tried to explain that it was a little tougher than just showing up and automatically leading a guy to Jesus but I said I'd go. I did. Early Monday afternoon I met with Jim in his room at the … [Read more...] about The Never-ending Struggle of Ministry

Ronnie Floyd Has Been Elected EC President

April 2, 2019 by Dave Miller

By a vote of 68-1, The Executive Committee has elected Ronnie Floyd as its next president. Check Baptist Press for more details.   Ronnie's response on Twitter: .@ronniefloyd: 'We asked the Lord for a declarative showing ... Based on your call, I will be, this coming Sunday, resigning from' Cross Church 'and immediately taking the role of president-elect' of the EC. #sbcec19 … [Read more...] about Ronnie Floyd Has Been Elected EC President

When You Don’t Get Your Way

April 1, 2019 by Dave Miller

Tomorrow, Ronnie Floyd will be elected as the next president of the SBC's Executive Committee. I am told that there will likely be little opposition to his nomination and that a unanimous vote is a possibility. I am not aware of any significant organized opposition to his election. If you read SBC Voices, you are probably aware that I have not been a strong supporter of Ronnie's candidacy. I had hoped that they would choose someone else. When I heard that they were focused on Ronnie, back in January, I wrote an article, "The Man We Need in Nashville" which explained some of my concerns … [Read more...] about When You Don’t Get Your Way

Breaking News: Ronnie Floyd is the EC Presidential Candidate

March 31, 2019 by Dave Miller

In the worst kept secret in SBC history, Ronnie Floyd will be recommended to the EC as president this week. In this video, shared with his church, he not only announces this, but also gives a pretty good summary of the work of the EC president. I communicated with Ronnie earlier this week that he had my prayers as he undertook this job. While nothing is ever a sure thing, I believe his nomination will not receive much if any opposition at the EC. The Executive Committee is in turmoil right now and needs a strong hand. Pray for Dr. Floyd as he undertakes this task.   … [Read more...] about Breaking News: Ronnie Floyd is the EC Presidential Candidate

Reflections on Renewal in the SBC

March 29, 2019 by Dave Miller

The SBC is in an unprecedented time of transition and turmoil. We are about the fill the third of the five open entity head positions (the EC votes on its new president next week). Throughout all this turmoil we endure a presidential election last year in which the man who is now our president endured an unprecedented stream of slander and false accusation. Southwestern Seminary had the mother of all bad years. Division over our nation's politics have split our convention that once united politically. Racism continues to be an issue. The #metoo/#churchtoo scandal in the SBC hit the front pages … [Read more...] about Reflections on Renewal in the SBC

J.D. Greear – Bringing REAL Change to the SBC

March 23, 2019 by Dave Miller

How do you change the SBC? It is no canoe that shifts course easily with every stroke of the oar. It is a giant aircraft carrier and changing its course is not easy. Recent history has shown that the appointment of blue ribbon groups such as the Great Commission Task Force and such end up as little more than blips on the radar. Name Change. Blip. Calvinism. Blip. If I didn't believe that blogging and other social media had an impact, I wouldn't continue to engage this way. Our impact is often as negative as it is positive, but we have an impact on public opinion. We shine a light where … [Read more...] about J.D. Greear – Bringing REAL Change to the SBC
