Dr. Albert Mohler shares why Southern Baptists should be thankful for the rising generation of younger pastors. Here is an excerpt: Tonight I spent a really encouraging few hours with a group of younger pastors — men who are being greatly used of God to reach their own generation and far beyond. That experience made me really thankful, and also led me to think about why Southern Baptists should be especially thankful for the rising generation of young pastors. 1. They are deeply committed to the Gospel and to the authority of Scripture. 2. They love the church. 3. They are gifted … [Read more...] about Younger Pastors and the Hope of a Future in the SBC
Jesus and Tim Tebow, Part 3
Our guest blogger today is again Wade Phillips, who blogs at “A Good Infection“. He’s a TV news anchor in MS and a husband/father/deacon/SS Teacher combo! Thank you for sharing this series with us. This is the third part in a series on life and faith, that was triggered by a segment I recently did on Tim Tebow at WMOX radio. You can read part 1 here and part 2 here. I am Tim Tebow. And you are Tim Tebow. We are all Tim Tebow. No, most of us will never set foot on an NFL football field for any reason; much less lead a game winning drive, (or a bunch of them, for that matter.) But there … [Read more...] about Jesus and Tim Tebow, Part 3
Jesus and Tim Tebow, Part 2
Our guest blogger today is again Wade Phillips, who blogs at “A Good Infection“. He’s a TV news anchor in MS and a husband/father/deacon/SS Teacher combo! This is the second part of a series on life and faith, that was triggered by a recent segment I did on WMOX Radio about Tim Tebow. See part 1 here. One of the questions that inevitably comes up in any discussion of public faith is this: why do people get offended when someone puts their faith on display? Why should it bother others that someone is unashamed about their faith? Why should others want him to shut up? Why do they … [Read more...] about Jesus and Tim Tebow, Part 2
Jesus and Tim Tebow, Part 1
Our guest blogger today is Wade Phillips, who blogs at "A Good Infection". He's a TV news anchor in MS and a husband/father/deacon/SS Teacher combo! This is the first in a series of posts on life and faith, that was triggered by a recent segment I did on WMOX radio about Tim Tebow . . . Let me lay my cards on the table from the beginning. I really like Tim Tebow. I like him for a number of reasons. Some of them are related to his faith, some of them are related to his football skills, and some of them are related to the how entertaining he has made this year’s NFL season, on and off the … [Read more...] about Jesus and Tim Tebow, Part 1
Lottie Moon or Global Missions Offering? (William Thornton)
(The SBC Plodder writes a lot about CP, Lottie and other such issues. Here's one for your perusal.) No. Plodder has not gone moderate. The Cooperative Baptist Fellowship's Lottie Moon knockoff is called "Offering for Global Missions" although I've often seen it promoted as "Global Mission Offering." I don't know if any of the phrases are trademarked as are Lottie Moon and Annie Armstrong. The blog title comes from the church I attended Sunday which was in the midst of promoting what they labeled "Global Missions Offering," a composite (and they explain this in their promotional … [Read more...] about Lottie Moon or Global Missions Offering? If Santa Is a Myth, What Is the Jesus of the Baptist Funeral? (by CB Scott)
Some of you might think CB Scott is a newcomer to Baptist Blogging, but he's one of the original "Wild West" era Baptist bloggers and one of its key figures through the years. He took a break recently when his town (Birmingham, AL) was devastated by a tornado and he led relief efforts. His words here are very wise. It is the Christmas season. Therefore several posts have appeared here at SBC Voices related to the various issues concerning the way individuals celebrate the Advent. No one can doubt that a great deal of myth has been attached to the time of the year when we formally celebrate … [Read more...] about If Santa Is a Myth, What Is the Jesus of the Baptist Funeral? Ten Commandments for Christmas (by David Brumbelow)
But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. -Galatians 4:4-5 10 Commandments For Christmas I. Thou shalt not leave "Christ" out of "Christmas" nor refuse to use the word Christmas during this season. II. Thou shalt demonstrate joy to the world, for the Lord is come. III. Thou shalt not let Santa Claus take the place of the reality of the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem. IV. Thou shalt remember that the value of gifts we give … [Read more...] about Ten Commandments for Christmas (by David Brumbelow)
Get to the Right Road Soonest! (by Paul Thompson)
(Paul Thompson blogs at theBridge and offered this take on recent Lifeway research. Thank you, Paul.) On December 7, 2011, LifeWay Research released results of a recent survey on the Perceptions of Faith Groups. I would like to express concerns about some of the underlying assumptions behind the survey. I realize any fool can throw a rock. It was Charles Spurgeon who said, "asking questions are as easy as kissing the back of your hand; to answer them is as hard as fattening a greyhound." It is my attempt here, to fatten the greyhound. It does not surprise me that the findings of Ed … [Read more...] about Get to the Right Road Soonest! (by Paul Thompson)
When injustice is enough justice: Parsing theology into nothingness (by Marty Duren)
Editor: If Baptist Blogging had a Hall of Fame, Marty Duren would certainly be enshrined there. He still blogs at martyduren.com and always has something worthwhile to say. I was thrilled when Marty offered this article originally published at his site. Enjoy! Part of this post deals with the terrible situation at Penn State University that broke in recent days. Because my website crashed and was down for several days I was unable to write a full post and was limited to expressing my outrage on Twitter and a few Facebook status updates. Suffice it to say that I am thoroughly disgusted with … [Read more...] about When injustice is enough justice: Parsing theology into nothingness (by Marty Duren)
William Dwight McKissic, Sr: The Voice of One Crying in the Wilderness – In Defense of Herman Cain
Editor: William Dwight McKissic, Sr is a voice of conscience for the SBC on race related matters. This post is one of the more political posts you will see on SBC Voices, but I think that more than politics is at stake here. I appreciate our brother's contribution. The liberal media, conservative Republicans who support rival candidates and African American civil rights leaders who strongly support the Democratic Party and liberal causes, have unwittingly formed an unholy trinity to defeat and destroy the presidential aspirations of Herman Cain. The purpose of this article is not intended … [Read more...] about William Dwight McKissic, Sr: The Voice of One Crying in the Wilderness – In Defense of Herman Cain
