BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH

May 29, 2009 by SelahV

BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH by selahV Can a person be lost because they pray and believe Jesus saves him? If he confesses his sin and is cleansed from all unrighteousness trusting in God's Word, can he still be lost? If you believe you are saved because God's Word says you are saved, and you think you are saved, can you still be lost? Are you concerned that some people will "think" they are saved when they aren't, simply because they prayed a prayer? Can a person who "thinks" Jesus saves by grace and grace alone, still be lost even though they "think" it. For me? I trust in God's Word as … [Read more...] about BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH

Dealing With Legalism

May 28, 2009 by Matt Svoboda

Here is a great quote on legalism from Chuck Swindoll:  "The problem with legalists is that not enough people have confronted them and told them to get lost. Those are strong words, but I don’t mess with legalism anymore. I’m 72 years old; what have I got to lose? Seriously, I used to kowtow to legalists, but they’re dangerous. They are grace-killers. They’ll drive off every new Christian you bring to church. They are enemies of the faith. Other than that, I don’t have any opinion! So, if I am trying to force my personal list of no-no’s on you and make you feel guilty if you don’t join me, … [Read more...] about Dealing With Legalism

Win an Autographed Copy of Dr. Moore’s Adopted For Life

May 22, 2009 by Tony Kummer

Terry Delaney is giving away a signed copy of Russell Moore's new book Adopted for Life. Just go to his website and leave a comment on his review of Adopted for Life. Terry really - really - really likes the book. He writes: Every pastor must read this book. I dare say that anyone who calls upon the name of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior needs to read this book. Never before has the glory of the doctrine of adoption been laid out in such practical terms of the adoption of children. The Resurgence is also giving a way 3 copies but you have post some kind of picture on Facebook. … [Read more...] about Win an Autographed Copy of Dr. Moore’s Adopted For Life

7-Word Devotions

May 20, 2009 by Todd Burus

Between blogging and Facebook and Twitter, many people have turned to the internet to express themselves in very personal yet very public ways.  Chances are good that you are doing this in some way yourself.  Yet what do we really wind up saying?  What we’re eating?  Where we are going?  How our favorite sports team is doing and why that dramatically impacts our ability to cope with life?  With all the possible avenues of communicating, in the end we often wind up saying very little.  But it doesn’t have to be that way.     In his book, Brothers, We Are Not Professionals, John Piper … [Read more...] about 7-Word Devotions

Getting Familiar with SBC Blogging

May 19, 2009 by SelahV

Since I began blogging in 2006, the voices of SBC bloggers have changed quite a bit.  Some faded away, others became stronger.  With the addition of SBCVoices, many have been added and more are entering the world of Blogland all the time.  That is a good thing for the most part.  Folks are getting connected.  They are learning about various things within the community of pastors, seminaries, and entities.   However, there is a tenuous thread attached to the cyber-optic internet connection, too.  Some of the older bloggers (not chronologically by age, but having been blogging early on), … [Read more...] about Getting Familiar with SBC Blogging

Why I Believe In The SBC

May 16, 2009 by Scott Gordon

After penning this title I am sorely tempted to quote (out of context, of course) CS Lewis:  “I believe in [the SBC] like I believe in the sun.  Not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”  Now, that quote is typically attributed to Lewis and more directly answers the question, ‘Why do you believe in Jesus?’ or ‘Why are you a Christian?’  So, to apply that to the reason I can assuredly say today that I believe in the Southern Baptist Convention is a monumental statement of hyperbole.  Nevertheless, I am quite happy to be a Southern Baptist and a Southern Baptist … [Read more...] about Why I Believe In The SBC

Eschatology In the SBC

May 12, 2009 by Matt Svoboda

My time at Southern Seminary opened my eyes to a lot of theological issues.  Eschatology is certainly one of those issues.  When I arrived, The Left Behind Series was all I knew.  I soon realized I had been trapped in a theological vacuous church.  I began to study Eschatology and I came to a very different conclusion than the one I had been raised in. Most of the professors at Boyce College, that I am aware of, hold to a post-tribulation, Historic Premillennial view of Eschatology.  Yet, a lot of the students I spoke to were going in a different direction.  Although there were a fair share … [Read more...] about Eschatology In the SBC

“We Are Out To Change The World”

April 25, 2009 by SelahV

That was the theme of matriculation when my husband enrolled at Boyce Bible School (College today), in 1979.  We were so excited.  We sold our home, the majority of our belongings, said good-bye to family, packed up our children, and caravaned with another couple from East Hartford, Connecticut to Louisville, Kentucky.  We had no solid revelation as to what the Lord was calling us to do, but we knew He wanted my husband to surrender to full-time (or part-time) ministry.  We'd envisioned going back to New England to pastor.  Instead, God kept us in full-time ministry in Kentucky for 23 years.  … [Read more...] about “We Are Out To Change The World”

KBC Pictures an Unsteady Future for the Convention At-Large

April 24, 2009 by Todd Burus

On April 21 the Courier-Journal, based out of Louisville, KY, ran this article concerning the state of the Kentucky Baptist Convention.  It is hard to tell if the findings are truly representative of all SBC state conventions, or the SBC as a whole, but the numbers quoted by the article are enough to deserve attention at least locally in the state housing our largest Southern Baptist seminary.  Here's a quick run-down from the 2008 profile: Total undesignated giving and discipleship training were both up 3% over 2007 numbers Annual baptisms in the KBC were up 2% from 2007 … [Read more...] about KBC Pictures an Unsteady Future for the Convention At-Large

The Problem of “Southern Baptist” Branding

April 13, 2009 by Tony Kummer

In America, brand perception is the reality. This is bad news for Southern Baptists, if a recent straw poll by LifeWay's Thom Rainer is correct. Last week, he sent out requests on his @ThomRainer twitter page with this simple question: What do you think when you hear ‘Southern Baptist’? Despite the informal approach, this may be a very useful piece of research. Every major business in America monitors their brand image on social media sites like Twitter. It has become an effective way to get feedback about your product and position in the marketplace. None of this is lost on a sharp … [Read more...] about The Problem of “Southern Baptist” Branding
