May 4, 2022 by toddbenkert

Stand With Survivors in Anaheim

SBC Voices* will be active this June at the SBC Annual Meeting in Anaheim to give a voice to SBC abuse survivors, educate messengers about the need to support structural reforms on the denominational level, and help SBC churches minister well to survivors of abuse. We’ll be hosting a booth at the Pastors’ Conference and a breakout session on Tuesday night. The first objective of this project is to give SBC abuse survivors the opportunity to speak directly to Southern Baptist messengers about abuse. At the same time, we want to introduce SBC pastors and messengers to resources to help … [Read more...] about SBC Voices’ #StandWithSurvivors project in Anaheim

Announcement: Scholarships for #SBC21 Organized by SBC Voices

May 26, 2021 by Brent Hobbs

For the 2017 Pastors' Conference, one of the most edifying experiences (out of many) was being able to provide scholarships for 50 61 pastors to attend the Conference and Annual Meeting in Phoenix. We've had people ask about the possibility since and this year we decided to do something about it. We're raising money to help send messengers to Nashville. No strings attached. As long as they meet the criteria for the application, they'll be eligible and recipients will be chosen randomly from those who apply. Some details: Scholarships will be awarded on a random basis for those who … [Read more...] about Announcement: Scholarships for #SBC21 Organized by SBC Voices

If you're a pastor in Virginia or planning to attend the SBC Annual Meeting in Nashville, I'd like to invite you to join a Zoom call on Wednesday at 1pm to hear from Ed Litton about his vision for leading as SBC President. SBC Leadership Diversity Initiative – One Year In

May 17, 2019 by Brent Hobbs

One year ago today Alan Cross and I announced the launch of the SBC Leadership Diversity Initiative. I wanted to celebrate the progress we’ve made this year and update our readers on some of what we’ve seen. The LDI was designed as a networking tool for us to be able to discover and identify Southern Baptists for potential leadership roles who we might otherwise be unaware of, particularly ethnic minorities, women, and lay persons. We want to open the floodgates and remove as many barriers as possible to achieve our goal: A convention where ethnic minority leaders and members, as well as … [Read more...] about SBC Leadership Diversity Initiative – One Year In

Surgery Update on Dave Miller: Remarkably Successful, Doctors Highly Optimistic

June 26, 2018 by Brent Hobbs

We are so thankful to report that Dave came out of surgery tonight and all indications are that things went exceptionally well. I know he will be eager to write and thank you guys for your prayer an support as soon as the anesthesia wears off. We changed his password when he started threatening to live blog the procedure. We'll make sure all the medication is out of his system before he gets his login back. ;) Here's a summary of the report from Jenni: Dave got out of surgery about 6:10. They were able to do the laparoscopic procedure. They took out the mass and shaved a little off the … [Read more...] about Surgery Update on Dave Miller: Remarkably Successful, Doctors Highly Optimistic

Blessed Messes

June 26, 2018 by Dave Miller

I was in the village of Kaliane in the Casamance, southern Senegal, on Saturday, February 24, and I began to feel horrible. It was an amazing day, actually. We had a couple of gatherings planned with kids, arranged by my translator Alioune. We showed up for the morning session and found about 30 children, most much younger than I had expected. I told them a Bible story and then shared the gospel with them. We walked back to Jean Batiste and Isabelle's home and came back in the afternoon. This time there was a slightly older group of nearly 60 children and young teens and I got to tell them … [Read more...] about Blessed Messes

Help Us Help Dave Miller – GoFundMe for Medical Costs

June 20, 2018 by Brent Hobbs

Many of you know our fearless leader, Southern Hills pastor, SBC Voices Editor, #SBCPC17 President Dave Miller has been facing some serious health challenges this year. After getting really sick during his time doing missions work in Africa, then continuing to feel bad after the trip, Dave's doctors realized surgery would be required. A few tests later and they figured out there was more to the story. Cancer. But praise God it was detected early. Thanks to months of feeling terrible, kidney cancer was diagnosed long before any symptoms showed up. God's grace sometimes comes in unexpected … [Read more...] about Help Us Help Dave Miller – GoFundMe for Medical Costs

SBC Voices: Our Views, Values, and How that Affects Our Commenting Policy

June 8, 2018 by toddbenkert

Let me start by saying that these are my words and thoughts and while I am trying to give an overview of our SBC Voices team, I am responsible for whatever follows. Still, as one of the co-editors of the blog, I wanted to comment on who we are collectively. The guys did not sign off on my remarks, but I think I am accurate here.   Some of you might have experienced that your comments have not appeared on our site. Even as we allow differing views to be presented here and strive to have an open comment policy, we’ve been deleting more comments than usual these days. For one, it’s our … [Read more...] about SBC Voices: Our Views, Values, and How that Affects Our Commenting Policy

SBC Voices Down Much of the Day, 6/4/18

June 4, 2018 by Brent Hobbs

Our apologies for the significant downtime today. We ended up making an emergency move to a new web hosting company. We could tell the site was running poorly last night and eventually stopped working altogether for a few hours. Then by morning time the front end (the side our readers see) was functional and scheduled posts still went up, but we were locked out of any admin capabilities. Then it went down altogether. After some troubleshooting and work and talking with the hosting company, they explained what was going on. Because of high traffic and server load, the server had … [Read more...] about SBC Voices Down Much of the Day, 6/4/18
