Prayers for IMB Friday June 14

June 14, 2019 by Tony Jones

This is a story from one of our missionaries.  It is reprinted here with permission. All of us have stories to tell… about our lives, circumstances we may find ourselves in, or even simply what was done that day. As a journalism student I was taught to listen, but in our busy lives today, I think too often when we talk with others, we spend too much time thinking about how we are going to respond rather than listening to what is being said. Yesterday, for me, was a day I will not soon forget. The organization I work with partners with another organization in community development (CD) … [Read more...] about Prayers for IMB Friday June 14

#SBC19: home runs and whiffs

June 13, 2019 by William Thornton

Probably my most enjoyable convention in quite some time, partly because I stayed in the HQ hotel with the SBC heavy hitters. I spent my own money doing so. They surely did not. Good to see Kevin Ezell in the lobby very early in the morning, 5:30-6:00, working for us. The Westin had some very helpful people. They worked out a problem for me: Home run Hey, Westin, your restaurant and coffee shop opens at 6:30 which is 7:30 real (Eastern) time: Whiff. Yeah, that's Johnny Hunt ahead of me walking at about the same pace. Well, we are about the same age. SBCV colleague Todd walked with me … [Read more...] about #SBC19: home runs and whiffs

On the forsuchatimeasthis rally

June 12, 2019 by William Thornton

I made it a point to be at the rally. I suppose there were a hundred or so, some coming and going. Several of the leaders are people I have been following for a decade or more and I was pleased to meet and talk with them before and after the rally. Christa Brown and Dee Parsons (Wartburg Watch) were among these. Bob Allen (Baptist News Global), who has written more stories about SBC and other church related abuse for a longer time than any reporter I know, was there although I didn't get to meet him. Sad to say but Brown and Parsons and others have been treated quite poorly at times by … [Read more...] about On the forsuchatimeasthis rally

Committee on Resolutions Report FINAL

June 12, 2019 by Dave Miller

It appears that 16 resolutions were submitted and 13 are being reported out, though some were produced by the committee.  Many are completely rewritten by the committee. Ten of the 16 are listed as declined, yet some of them appear to have been the basis of resolutions brought forth by the committee. I am going to publish this now and then edit this as the discussion goes forward. What will happen (based on previous years) - we will go resolution by resolution until time runs out, then vote the rest as a group. Interesting that some of the most controversial are at the … [Read more...] about Committee on Resolutions Report FINAL

LifeWay Video Explains Store Closings

June 12, 2019 by Dave Miller

Retail losses in the last 5 years have been 50 million dollars. I hope this video is widely available. It explains the closings very well.   LifeWay.com is growing and healthy. (You should go watch the whole report through the SBC's portal, here's the nearest points on the Lifeway report, unfortunately it's on my Youtube so you see my face there--Doug) … [Read more...] about LifeWay Video Explains Store Closings

I Disagree with My Friends

June 12, 2019 by Dave Miller

I realized something today, following Twitter and discussing issues over meals and with friends. There are a lot of issues on which I disagree with my closest friends in the SBC. On one election ballot, my wife put her x on a different number than I did. I could not convince her that complementarianism required her to vote like me. Hmmmm...... Over a dinner discussion today I realized that everyone else there voted differently than I did. I saw a tweet I couldn't have disagreed with more strongly and a good friend liked it. And every person I am speaking of here is part of the SBC … [Read more...] about I Disagree with My Friends

Disposition of Motions

June 12, 2019 by Dave Miller

Dr Greenway announced the disposition of the rest of the motions. Out of Order Morgan Bush - urging churches to oppose pornography. It is a resolution. Derin Stidd - ERLC to study ways to abolish abortion. The convention can only request not direct the trustees of an entity. Caleb Lewis - request Council of Seminary Presidents to make BF&M only doctrinal statement for seminaries.  The council cannot direct the seminary boards. To EC by vote Pam Richerson - wants to tighten BF&M to encode strict complementarianism in the BF&M. Ryan Broers - request EC to create … [Read more...] about Disposition of Motions

Nominations Report Passes without Amendment

June 12, 2019 by Dave Miller

Jennifer Lyell moved to replace Roger Spradlin with Susan Codone on the newly forming Credentials Committee.  Susan shared her story at the ERLC Abuse forum Monday night and Jennifer said she would be the only abuse survivor on the committee. Chair Bucky Kennedy and EC chair Mike Stone spoke against the amendment.  It failed and the report passed. … [Read more...] about Nominations Report Passes without Amendment

Well, I Didn’t Expect This @ #SBC19

June 12, 2019 by Scott Gordon

During the Tuesday afternoon session of #SBC19, my wife, Rhonda, shared with me a story of an incident which happened during the voting for Registration Secretary in the BJCC Arena—that section of the Convention Labyrinth in which the meeting is held. There were two candidates, Don Currence (the current RS) and Kathy Litton (to borrow from my friend, Brent Hobbs’ bio on her: “She currently works with NAMB as director of church planter spouse development. Litton is known across the convention for her leadership and teaching among SBC women.” She is also the wife of Pastor Ed Litton). During … [Read more...] about Well, I Didn’t Expect This @ #SBC19
