I've heard from several readers who are just discovering that iMonk is a long time (and current) Southern Baptist. Even more are surprised that he is making a solid run in our SBC blog contest. So, if you need just one more post to prove his credentials as an SBC blogger, I think he just published it. Avoiding Death by Nostalgia: My Denomination (The SBC) Today “Death by Nostalgia” is wishing the world was like it was in the 1970’s and we could just assume that we were right . . . We’ve become functionally unevangelistic in many places because our past methodologies- door to door … [Read more...] about Death By Nostalgia And The SBC
Kummer Is Untouchable
I've volunteered over at iMonk's cave for a blog dialogue called Evangelical Untouchables. The first response is up about explaining the Gospel. Please go read my response and add any criticism or appreciation you can muster. I won't be able to follow comments all the comments over there, so you might want to leave them on this post too. Our first question: “If you had only two paragraphs to express the Gospel to an audience of secular twenty-somethings who don’t go to church, what would you say? Then tell us how you are promoting it in your church. Since I had only two paragraphs, I just … [Read more...] about Kummer Is Untouchable

Did W. A. Criswell Preach Calvinism?
I don't know enough about him to know. But I found this video of a sermon he titled "The Bible Kind Of Salvation." He begins by saying it's actually a sermon on election, on the calling and choosing of God. … [Read more...] about Did W. A. Criswell Preach Calvinism?
Dr. Albert Mohler Lecture On John Calvin
Tim Challies just posted his notes from a talk by Dr. R. Albert Mohler. The topic was the legacy of John Calvin as a preacher & teacher. Follow this link to read it for yourself: Ligonier Conference - Al Mohler Calvin understood the majesty of preaching because he understood the majesty of God. Calvin’s mode of preaching was verse-by-verse, book-by-book so he would not selectively avoid things he did not wish to teach. In this way God’s people receive all that they need and not just what the preacher determines the people need. The preacher is neither to add nor subtract from Scripture. … [Read more...] about Dr. Albert Mohler Lecture On John Calvin
From Doubting To Disciple Making
Most committed Southern Baptist could recite the Great Commission of Matthew 28:19-20 by heart. Jesus gave instructions to the disciples before He ascended to heaven about their task ahead and commanded them to go and make disciples in all the nations. Everyone knows this message in some way. It is a driving force behind the efforts of Southern Baptists to take the news of the gospel to every corner of the globe and every people that exists. But I am intrigued by the verses before this commission just as much. For instance, I am convinced that we should add verse eighteen to our … [Read more...] about From Doubting To Disciple Making
We’ve Had Our Prophets
I came across a few old Southern Baptists voices this morning. It made me wonder where all the prophetic voices are in our day. First, there is this amazing quote from Adrian Rogers. (Follow that link for the audio.) It just shows so much of our current political debates are nothing new, except that our generation doesn't have the common sense to see the consequences. “Friend, you cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. And what one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government can’t give to … [Read more...] about We’ve Had Our Prophets
Christian Courtship & Helping Teens To Learn From Our Sin
My husband and I were both Christians when we became involved with each other but our life did not bear the fruit of it in many ways. We broke up, but then I found out I was pregnant. My now sister in law told him I was pregnant (because I refused to) and after a few weeks of fighting about it we were married. I loved Mike very much but I knew he had cold feet for a reason. I didn't want him to feel like he had to marry me, but I also didn't want to feel like I was second choice either. Nearly 18 years later, we are both the wiser and each of us have a deep and intimate relationship with … [Read more...] about Christian Courtship & Helping Teens To Learn From Our Sin
Christian Devotions Online
I just wanted to plug a new wesbite I'm developing. It's basically an aggregator for daily bible devotions pulled from various RSS feeds. Going forward I might add some writers and give it a go as a blog too, but for now I'm just letting it build up some traffic. Check it out and give me suggestions. … [Read more...] about Christian Devotions Online
SBC: In Need of Direction
There have been numerous posts recently from different SBC personalities about the visions competing for the future of the Southern Baptist Convention. In my opinion, the debate has gotten nasty and defaming to Christ. People have differing opinions on what these visions are and how many different visions exist. There is the Baptist Identity vision, the Founders vision(GCR), the cooperationists vision, and in my opinion there is the common man vision.(there are more visions, but I will leave it at those) I am a common man. I want what is best for the Southern Baptist Convention. I am … [Read more...] about SBC: In Need of Direction
