I first noticed the term, “prioritism,” in David Hesselgrave’s book, “Paradigms in Conflict” (Kregel Publications, 2005). Dr. Hesselgrave taught missions at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School for more than 30 years, and he was one of the founders of the Evangelical Missions Society. Dr. Hesselgrave died two years ago, but he was the godfather of evangelical missions. In his book he defined “prioritism” in this way: “What I will call traditional prioritism recognizes the importance of all or most of those ministries that address the various medical, educational, economic, and social needs of … [Read more...] about Prioritism and the SBC
The Racially Insensitive Comments about Trillia Newbell were Made by…
Yesterday, a letter from Dr. Russell Moore to the trustees of the ERLC was leaked. In it, he explains his reasons for leaving the ERLC (and now, the SBC). He realized that his enemies at the Executive Committee were seeking to make him live in "psychological terror" and he was not willing to do that anymore. He recounted the years of abuse of power by leaders at the EC. The full text of the article can be read here. In the article, Dr. Moore said something that infuriated many people. I will copy that paragraph in full Another SBC leader used constant pressure against me in protest of our … [Read more...] about The Racially Insensitive Comments about Trillia Newbell were Made by…
Binary Polarization Syndrome
On some issues, there are only two choices. We are either male or female and the whole "non-binary" gender movement may be the most ridiculous thing in history. I had four children and back then the gender-reveal party was simple. My wife gave birth. I looked at the new baby and revealed to my wife what we had. I was never confused. Gender dysphoria is a real thing, but God made us male and female. My dad used to say there are two kinds of people - the saints and the aints. People often try to add categories of Christians, but there are the redeemed and the lost and there are no … [Read more...] about Binary Polarization Syndrome
At the Risk of Saying “We Told You So…”
When the Conservative Baptist Network formed, it was widely known that at the center of its formation was the powerful hand of Dr. Paige Patterson, the recently dismissed president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He was present at Mid-American Seminary at the meeting where the CBN was formed. The introductory videos were filmed in his study. All the key leaders were "Pattersonian" - it had his handprints all over it. Yet, representatives of the CBN scoffed, tap-danced, and fell just short of outright denials of Patterson's involvement. When we made statements here that this was … [Read more...] about At the Risk of Saying “We Told You So…”
Significant Concerns about the New SBC Business & Finance Plan (Part 2) by Jon Canler
See part 1 here, where Canler discusses the first two areas of concern. There he said: My concerns revolve around three aspects of the plan, two of which I’ll highlight in this post, and the third I’ll discuss in part two: Reservations Regarding Escrowing Cooperative Program (CP) Funds and Entity Reporting Reservations Regarding Trustee and EC Nominations Reservations Related to Sole Membership, Ascending Liability, and Seminary Accreditation What is Sole Membership and Why is it Good for Southern Baptists? Sole membership is the legal way the Southern Baptist … [Read more...] about Significant Concerns about the New SBC Business & Finance Plan (Part 2) by Jon Canler
Significant Concerns about the New SBC Business & Finance Plan (Part 1) by Jon Canler
Consider my two posts an open letter to the Executive Committee (EC) of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) and to SBC legal counsel where feedback and clarity are welcomed concerning the current text of the revised and updated SBC Business & Finance Plan (BFP) being brought before the messengers of the 2021 SBC annual meeting in Nashville, TN. For reference, you can find the current BFP on pg. 25 here and the proposed plan to be voted on in Nashville here. First, know that I am certainly for business and financial stewardship, accountability, and transparency among the SBC and its … [Read more...] about Significant Concerns about the New SBC Business & Finance Plan (Part 1) by Jon Canler
The unofficial Voices irreverent guide to #SBC21
The SBC Annual Meeting will be off with a gavel slam in 15 days. I'll be there along with around 15,000 other messengers, guests, media, and protesters. Count me in the first group, a messenger from an SBC church. This is the unofficial SBC Voices guide to the Annual Meeting. Unofficial because I couldn't get the other guys to sign on to it. Sometimes they don't see the things I do. Here are some notes on the meeting. The annual meeting of Great Commission Baptists is at the same time, same place and has the same program. I welcome our colleagues who wish to be identified by a … [Read more...] about The unofficial Voices irreverent guide to #SBC21
A Plea to the 2021 Resolutions Committee
I just spent nearly 2 weeks in Senegal with a member of this year's Resolutions Committee. We had adjoining rooms at a beachfront hotel for the Casamance men's conference, shared every meal, and spent a lot of time talking during that week. You'd think I would have some inside information on what the committee had planned. Alas, Bart Barber was closed-lipped and I gleaned no deep insights. I am toying with writing a resolution extolling the virtues and blessings of coffee just to aggravate Dr. Barber who virtue-signals constantly against those who drink the nectar of heaven. The apocryphal … [Read more...] about A Plea to the 2021 Resolutions Committee
Why does the updated Business and Financial Plan make it harder for SBC members to get entity financial information?
This is a change that diminishes the ability of members of cooperating churches from knowing about the entities that they pay for. Better take a look at this. Current Business and Financial Plan, (In the SBC Annual this sentence is in Article XIV. On SBCNet, which I have linked, the sentence is not in a numbered article but is on page 9 of the BFP.) Members of cooperating Southern Baptist churches shall have access to information from the records of Southern Baptist Convention entities regarding income, expenditures, debts, reserves, operating balances, and salary … [Read more...] about Why does the updated Business and Financial Plan make it harder for SBC members to get entity financial information?
