I pastored my first Southern Baptist Church when I was twenty, and have since had the privilege of pastoring in the denomination for thirteen years. You may be a Trump enthusiast, a reluctant Trump voter, or a NeverTrump hold out like me, but I would guess that we have two things in common: 1. We can hardly wait for the election season to be over. You get no sympathy from me on this. I'm an Iowan and we are blessed to hold the "first-in-the-nation" caucuses, so we start seeing candidates and campaigns before the rest of the country. It's a long campaign. Hopeful Signs, Interesting Elections
I'm a pessimist at heart. It comes from my theology of humanity - it's hard to read Romans 3 and trumpet the "human beings are basically good" mantra that the politicians love. We are sinners - born that way, live that way, and we die that way unless the Lord Jesus grabs our hearts. And (not to throw an eschatalogical curveball) I believe the Scriptures that tell us the there will be perilous days as the world continues, that this world is not moving toward the liberal utopia many see, but toward a moral meltdown before the return of Christ. Reflections on the Credit Card Receipt Heard Round the World
I was surprised last night, when my wife and I dined at a local eatery, that our server had not heard the now infamous story of the lady in St. Louis, Alois Bell, pastor of a church of about 15 people, who lost her cool after an 18% gratuity was added to her bill. Applebees tacks that on automatically if a party is 8 or more people, even if you split the bill as Ms Bell did. Angered by the automatic amount, Ms. Bell crossed out the tip and added a message that said, "I give God 10%, why do you get 18?" She then took the extra step to sign her bill "Pastor Alois Bell."
