On Immigration: From Tired, Poor, Huddled Masses to Trump’s Best and Brightest?

July 31, 2015 by Alan Cross

The immigration debate in America has taken a nasty turn of late with Donald Trump's entry into the GOP Presidential nominating process and his remarks about those coming here illegally from Mexico and other places not being the "best and brightest." His words seem to be catching on as a nativist movement is growing with Trump himself as the figurehead as he has taken a commanding lead in the polls for the Republican nomination. GOP leaders like Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama, who leads the Senate Sub Committee on Immigration, are mirroring some of Trump's rhetoric as there are emerging … [Read more...] about On Immigration: From Tired, Poor, Huddled Masses to Trump’s Best and Brightest?

We Need a NEW BIBLICAL RESURGENCE

June 11, 2022 by Dave Miller

Though I’ve heard it asserted a hundred times, I do not think the SBC needs a “New Conservative Resurgence.” Liberalism is not making a comeback in our convention. It just isn’t so. We are a convention of men and women who believe the Bible. We have some varying viewpoints on issues, but we share a belief that the Bible is free of errors and is the absolute standard of truth. We are complementarians who believe the pastoral role is reserved for men. Yes, there are differences of opinion on the fine points of that stance. May a woman ever ascend the pulpit? Does the restriction include all … [Read more...] about We Need a NEW BIBLICAL RESURGENCE

Weapons of Our Warfare

January 24, 2022 by Dave Miller

At a Turning Point gathering on December 19, 2021, Donald Trump, Jr. drew wild applause from conservates, many of whom would describe themselves as “Christian conservatives” when he said the following. “We’ve turned the other cheek, and I understand, sort of, the biblical reference — I understand the mentality — but it’s gotten us nothing. Okay? It’s gotten us nothing while we’ve ceded ground in every major institution in our country.” If you have any doubt that the modern conservative movement is divorcing itself from any biblical moorings, realize that this conservative crowd cheered when … [Read more...] about Weapons of Our Warfare

A Word (Well, a LOT of Words) about SBC Voices

December 3, 2021 by Dave Miller

I am emerging from my personal hibernation to address an issue and give some information about SBC Voices. I am coming out of probably the worst 2-year period in my life - I won't bother to regale you with all the details, but COVID hit me hard and hit my church hard. Two years ago, both my parents went on hospice and I lost both of them and that kinda knocked me back. Ministering in the post-COVID era has been a challenge unlike any I have faced in 40 years. I had surgery recently and I am recovering. All of that has led to a period of significant discouragement in life - yeah, my doctor … [Read more...] about A Word (Well, a LOT of Words) about SBC Voices

Binary Polarization Syndrome

June 3, 2021 by Dave Miller

On some issues, there are only two choices. We are either male or female and the whole "non-binary" gender movement may be the most ridiculous thing in history.  I had four children and back then the gender-reveal party was simple. My wife gave birth. I looked at the new baby and revealed to my wife what we had.  I was never confused. Gender dysphoria is a real thing, but God made us male and female. My dad used to say there are two kinds of people - the saints and the aints. People often try to add categories of Christians, but there are the redeemed and the lost and there are no … [Read more...] about Binary Polarization Syndrome

Suggested Ethics for Online Theological Discourse (Phillip Powers)

May 28, 2021 by Guest Blogger

The legacy of Donald Trump’s term as President of the United States will not be measured in terms of legislation passed, appointments made, or diplomatic accords achieved. It will not be counted by any advancements of the Republican party’s agenda, by any conservative causes that were championed, or by any national or international crises that were averted. No, the lasting influence of the 45th President will only be measured by the bitter division and caustic animosity that has absolutely engulfed our country. It is an insidious sickness that has pervaded every sphere of our public discourse, … [Read more...] about Suggested Ethics for Online Theological Discourse (Phillip Powers)

The SBC and Itching Ears

May 27, 2021 by Dave Miller

We love 2 Timothy 4:3-4 because it is a biblical prophecy we have seen come to fruition in our day and one that allows us to point our fingers at "them" - those outside our circles who have abandoned truth to embrace the spirit of the age.  For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, will multiply teachers for themselves because they have an itch to hear what they want to hear. They will turn away from hearing the truth and will turn aside to myths. We immediately think (and point fingers at) the Joel Osteens and other positive … [Read more...] about The SBC and Itching Ears

Russell Moore Leaving ERLC for New Role at Christianity Today

May 19, 2021 by Brent Hobbs

Big news last night for the SBC and larger evangelical world: Russell Moore is leaving our ERLC to take on a new role with Christianity Today. Moore's resignation is effective June 1, with VP Daniel Patterson serving as acting president at that time. In an article at his own website, Moore says, "I am excited today to accept the invitation from Christianity Today to join their team as public theologian and as director of a new venture, the Christianity Today Public Theology Project, which is devoted to cultivating a forward-looking, joyful, consistent gospel witness." CT News Release: … [Read more...] about Russell Moore Leaving ERLC for New Role at Christianity Today

Rutledge Letter vs. the Patterson Letter

February 9, 2021 by Dwight McKissic

Last Monday I posted a letter I received from John V. Rutledge, that was clearly racist and expressed low regard for the intellectual capacities and Christian understanding and commitment to the biblical faith. A common response to the Rutledge letter from some Southern Baptists (SB) was that he was not representative of the SBC, and he has not been active in the SBC for the past 20 years (although he was active for 50 years). The reason I posted the Rutledge letter was to make people aware that racist attitudes exist among some SB; and I raised the question, “what percentage of the SBC is … [Read more...] about Rutledge Letter vs. the Patterson Letter

I Have Something to Say: An Open Letter from Deryk Hayes

February 4, 2021 by Guest Blogger

To all that this may concern, Normally I would begin a letter such as this with a greeting that clearly explains my hope and prayer that the reader is doing well, encouraged, and in good spirits. In such an instance I would further go on to explain my purpose of the letter to the reader so that not only are my words read but also so that my heart is heard. Unfortunately, I understand that the content of this letter, if read at all, may be misconstrued, misinterpreted, and misunderstood. Nevertheless, I have something to say. Far too many Evangelicals and Fundamentalists have a problem. … [Read more...] about I Have Something to Say: An Open Letter from Deryk Hayes
