At the 2006 SBC Pastor's Conference, Albert Mohler listed ways that all Southern Baptists are Calvinists: A belief in the inerrancy of Scripture - "It is not by accident that there are no great Arminian testimonies to the inerrancy of Scripture. We really do believe that God can work in such a way that the human will wills to do what God wills that will to do. And that is exactly why we believe in the inerrancy of Scripture. We do not believe that the Apostle Paul was irresistibly against his will drawn to write the Book of Romans.” A belief in the substitutionary atonement - "The logic … [Read more...] about Albert Mohler: Why All Southern Baptists are Calvinists

The Cooperation Group/Lifeway survey on the Cooperative Program: Anything of value to come from it?
Jared Wellman and the SBC Cooperation Group is doing a survey. Lifeway Research is collaborating in this and all SBC churches with an email address receive the survey. [As an aside, I get a malware notice from my security software on Windows but not on my iPad.] Here is the survey and how I would have answered as pastor of the church from which I retired. The survey asks for answers on a scale from "strongly disagree" to "don't know". I'm not a survey expert and don't know why the choice was negatives first followed by the positives. _____ The Cooperative Program supports SBC … [Read more...] about The Cooperation Group/Lifeway survey on the Cooperative Program: Anything of value to come from it?
Finding Our Political Sweet Spot
I am sitting in JFK airport putting the final touches on this, after an overnight flight that ended my two week stay in Senegal. While there, I’m pretty much cut off from most things I do that distract me, but when the sun is in the east, the breeze out of the west, and phase of the moon is right, I can get a bit of bandwidth and browse Facebook, even Twitter at times. I’m sure you haven’t noticed that there’s a bit of hysteria out there about the elections on Tuesday. My first encounter with electio-mania was with a high school friend who basically anathematized anyone who would … [Read more...] about Finding Our Political Sweet Spot
Great Commission Giving. Trads and Cals now love that giving metric?
Does the love fest between the rabid Cals and the formerly militant, though now meek, Trads extend to Great Commission Giving, the SBC giving category that can't get any respect? I'm just trying to manage all the consequences of recent SBC political developments that have my head spinning. You'd think my Christian, Baptist, Southern Baptist colleagues would have more respect for their elders than to jerk their head this way and that with convention politics. Fantasyland, SBC style. So, the Trads love their presidential candidate, longtime follower of Jesus and John Calvin, Tom Ascol. I like … [Read more...] about Great Commission Giving. The Eternal Conundrum of Social Media Involvement
I have been involved in blogging and social media for over 15 years, and have been running SBC Voices for nearly 12 years now. For a while, I was spending way too much time on this site and in the last year, I have largely ignored it, with the exception of two brief times - the SBC Annual Meeting and the unfortunate upheaval surrounding the Executive Committee's refusal to follow the will of the Annual Meeting, leading to the resignation of Ronnie Floyd and several EC members. I haven't looked at the stats, but I'm guessing I posted fewer articles in 2021 than any year since 2009 when I … [Read more...] about The Eternal Conundrum of Social Media Involvement
Bunyan’s Badman: Why buy the cow when the milk is cheap?
John Bunyan is one of the most famous Baptists in history, though I suspect he’s less well-known today than at any other time in the last 50 to 100 years. Google would seem to agree. In case the name is unfamiliar to you, Bunyan is famous for writing Pilgrim’s Progress. This is a beloved Christian allegory first published in 1678. It has been translated into over 200 languages. (By comparison, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone has been translated into just shy of 90.) I’ve read Pilgrim’s Progress a few times, and it’s widely available in modern and children’s editions that update … [Read more...] about Bunyan’s Badman: Why buy the cow when the milk is cheap?
Peacemaking: 4 Lessons Southern Baptists Can Learn From Whitefield and Wesley
Peacemaking. It’s a word that probably won’t get this post many views or likes. It seems that we currently are like the drivers who frustrate the stew out of me on the interstate. They slow down traffic while passing an accident scene to rubberneck and see the carnage from the collision. Or perhaps we are like sharks who participate in a feeding frenzy after they sense blood in the water. We have a frustrating tendency in the SBC to distract ourselves with fights over tertiary issues rather than focusing on the Great Commission. As I read recent posts and comments on social media arguing … [Read more...] about Peacemaking: 4 Lessons Southern Baptists Can Learn From Whitefield and Wesley
Binary Polarization Syndrome
On some issues, there are only two choices. We are either male or female and the whole "non-binary" gender movement may be the most ridiculous thing in history. I had four children and back then the gender-reveal party was simple. My wife gave birth. I looked at the new baby and revealed to my wife what we had. I was never confused. Gender dysphoria is a real thing, but God made us male and female. My dad used to say there are two kinds of people - the saints and the aints. People often try to add categories of Christians, but there are the redeemed and the lost and there are no … [Read more...] about Binary Polarization Syndrome
The unofficial Voices irreverent guide to #SBC21
The SBC Annual Meeting will be off with a gavel slam in 15 days. I'll be there along with around 15,000 other messengers, guests, media, and protesters. Count me in the first group, a messenger from an SBC church. This is the unofficial SBC Voices guide to the Annual Meeting. Unofficial because I couldn't get the other guys to sign on to it. Sometimes they don't see the things I do. Here are some notes on the meeting. The annual meeting of Great Commission Baptists is at the same time, same place and has the same program. I welcome our colleagues who wish to be identified by a … [Read more...] about The unofficial Voices irreverent guide to #SBC21
