Back on the Disabled List – One More Time

November 25, 2018 by Dave Miller

On Monday morning at 6:30 I am headed back for my third surgery this year. This one is kind of a good news/bad news thing. My first surgery cost me a gallbladder and a spleen and the second one dealt with a cancerous tumor on my kidney. This one is only designed to fix a post-operative hernia that popped up after the cancer surgery. My doctor told me that a large guy who has lost a lot of weight (well, prior to Thanksgiving Dinner anyway) and has his insides jostled with the removal of two organs, both badly diseased and one (spleen) that has grown huge because of a cyst, should not be … [Read more...] about Back on the Disabled List – One More Time

John Allen Chau, Martyrdom, and Danger in Missionary Efforts

November 23, 2018 by Dave Miller

There has been a lot of discussion recently of the death of John Allen Chau, a young missionary who violated Indian laws to go the remote North Sentinel Island to proclaim Christ to the isolated people who lived there and was immediately killed. He was aware of the danger of his actions and said that while he did not want to die he felt the call of God to take the gospel to these people who did not know Jesus. I am not a missiologist and will leave the in-depth insights to others, but I have a few thoughts I'd like to share. 1. The ultimate commitment of all Christians is to carry the … [Read more...] about John Allen Chau, Martyrdom, and Danger in Missionary Efforts

Things to Be Thankful For…A Record-Breaking Year at SBC Voices

November 20, 2018 by Dave Miller

We don't publish our page-views, which is the easiest way to judge traffic on a blog, and I am not going to do so here. But we have had an amazing year at SBC Voices, judging by our page views. Thank you for being a part of it. Last year, 2017, was actually down a little. We were running the Pastors' Conference and tended to ignore the blog and then after the conference, we were all kinda burned out. If it weren't for William Thornton's consistent contributions we'd have shrunk to nothing. But this year we broke pretty much every traffic record our Jetpack stats track - except for the … [Read more...] about Things to Be Thankful For…A Record-Breaking Year at SBC Voices

Giving Thanks – Embracing the Cross

November 20, 2018 by Dave Miller

Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday, filled with family, food, and football, a uniquely American celebration of our prosperity and all that we have to be thankful for. And let’s face it, with all the problems that we often bemoan, we have a lot to be thankful for, don’t we? We live in a great nation. Regardless of our political foibles, this is still a great place to live. If you are tempted to criticize America harshly, travel. I love Senegal, but I am always glad to set foot back in the USA. I feel privileged to have spent time growing up in Taiwan, but it is not the land of my birth. Israel … [Read more...] about Giving Thanks – Embracing the Cross

Holiday Rules at SBC Voices

November 19, 2018 by Dave Miller

I have family in and am in the countdown to my third (and hopefully last) surgery of the year - next Monday morning. It's Thanksgiving and I hope you have better things to do this week than blog! If the mood hits I might write something. If any of our writers get inspired and want to write, or if something huge happens, post 'em when they are ready. Give about 5 hours to a post before you post - more if you can. If there is breaking news...that takes precedence. I don't plan to be moderating comments unless some of you Reformed guys get into the alcohol and go wild. Things have … [Read more...] about Holiday Rules at SBC Voices

IMB Trustees Elect Paul Chitwood President by Unanimous Vote (Update concerning IMB Policies)

November 16, 2018 by Dave Miller

UPDATE: Concerning the IMB policies mentioned below. I have received assurance from someone with specific and unequivocal knowledge of the situation that Dr. Chitwood has NO intention of revisiting or attempting to reinstitute the policies that were instituted under the guidance of the committee he chaired when he was on the board previously. I am glad to hear that this will not be an issue in Dr. Chitwood's administration.  It is not surprising that IMB trustees elected Dr. Paul Chitwood as their next President yesterday. It is somewhat remarkable, I think, that he was elected unanimously. … [Read more...] about IMB Trustees Elect Paul Chitwood President by Unanimous Vote (Update concerning IMB Policies)

Dr. Paul Chitwood Nominated as IMB President

November 6, 2018 by Dave Miller

The IMB search committee is announcing its intention to nominate Dr. Paul Chitwood, the Executive Director of the Kentucky Baptist Convention, as the next president of the International Mission Board. The official vote will be held Nov. 15. I have never met Dr. Chitwood but several of my friends, some of them part of the SBC Voices team, have. Every one of them speaks of him in the highest terms, both as to his character and his competence. The Kentucky convention is a large convention and Dr. Chitwood has led it well. A friend told me privately that he was the best executive director he … [Read more...] about Dr. Paul Chitwood Nominated as IMB President

SWBTS: On the Comeback Trail?

October 29, 2018 by Dave Miller

Last year would have to be described as a difficult time for Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary by any metric. There were reports of declining enrollment and financial troubles, along with the constant drumbeat of controversy that led to the dismissal of their long-tenured president, Dr. Paige Patterson, an event that also resulted in some of the more dramatic convention moments we have witnessed in a while. Whatever your take on the troubles, I think we can agree that it was not SWBTS' best year. I am not closely involved with what is happening at the school but have been … [Read more...] about SWBTS: On the Comeback Trail?

What “Trust the Trustees” Means…and Doesn’t Mean

October 23, 2018 by Dave Miller

I heard a story recently that infuriated me. A friend was speaking to a trustee of one of our institutions who told him that one of the things he liked about being a trustee was that he didn't have to listen to anyone else but the other trustees. And, he said, his only job was to help the president of the entity enact his agenda. Wow. I wrote an article the other day opposing the idea of publishing entity president's salaries and advocating that we "trust the trustees." Some people seem to have a very different idea of what it means to trust the trustees than I do, evidently. What I mean is … [Read more...] about What “Trust the Trustees” Means…and Doesn’t Mean

Baptists and the Mega Millions Jackpot

October 22, 2018 by Dave Miller

There are all kinds of good reasons to oppose the lottery. It is a terrible form of gambling that tends to appeal most to people who can't afford it. I've heard it described as a tax on stupidity - you've better odds of being struck by lightning than winning the thing. Then suddenly the Mega Millions (is that the right one?) jackpot reaches an estimated 1.6 billion (yep, that's with a b) for the next drawing and suddenly even a Baptist preacher like me who has never played the lottery in my life finds myself tempted to buy a ticket. Sure, I know the one-time payout on the 1.6 billion might … [Read more...] about Baptists and the Mega Millions Jackpot
