Criticism and the SBC: Part 2 – Criticizing in Love

December 14, 2018 by Dave Miller

I watched a video recently decrying the feminization of men in the modern church. The speaker valued things like aggression and even anger as masculine and admirable. A while back a blogger wrote an article challenging the "idolatry of unity" - we cherish love and unity to the point where we are afraid to condemn sin and challenge error in the church. Perhaps there is a nugget of truth in these observations, but there is much to be wary of and much to reject. The fact is, as I noted in my first post, the Bible says much more about love and unity than it does about confrontation, about "calling … [Read more...] about Criticism and the SBC: Part 2 – Criticizing in Love

BREAKING NEWS: SBTS Releases Report on Slavery and Racism in Its History

December 12, 2018 by Dave Miller

Dr. Albert Mohler and SBTS have just released a groundbreaking document called "Report on Slavery and Racism in the History of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary." I gave it a quick perusal, so I am not going to offer much analysis at this time, other than to say that this kind of honest appraisal of our history is needed among Southern Baptists. A PDF of the full report is available here. The report begins with a letter from Dr. Mohler with an overview and explanation. It is helpful and is copied here inn full. Dear Friends: We are living in an age of historical reckoning. … [Read more...] about BREAKING NEWS: SBTS Releases Report on Slavery and Racism in Its History

Criticism and the SBC: Part 1 – Criticizing God’s Way

December 11, 2018 by Dave Miller

We always struggle with how to criticize the SBC and its leaders. Many of them, frankly, don't like it much and we don't enjoy doing it. Giving criticism will always put you in the crosshairs for others' criticism (or the silent treatment, or...). We have often found ourselves playing defense against the outrageous and inaccurate criticisms lodged against the SBC and its leaders by angry Baptists with an ax to grind. Now, the tectonic plates have shifted and we are in a position to speak critical words about things we see in the SBC. The SBC Voices team is made up of loyal, supportive, … [Read more...] about Criticism and the SBC: Part 1 – Criticizing God’s Way

STOP Complaining about Pulpit and Pen – BLOCK Them!

December 8, 2018 by Dave Miller

It happened again a couple of days ago. Shock. Outrage. Twitter lit up because the men at Pulpit and Pen said something outrageous, racist, sexist, and homophobic. Honestly, who could have seen that coming? I am not going to repeat what they said. The shameful rhetoric would even rile some who share JD Hall's views. But it was not shocking that P&P did something like this. Shameful, unChristian, vicious attacks are the stock in trade of JD Hall and Seth Dunn and have been for years. There is no evidence of the Fruit of the Spirit or even the desire to display such - just the will to … [Read more...] about STOP Complaining about Pulpit and Pen – BLOCK Them!

Harvest Is Coming: Choices Have Consequences

December 4, 2018 by Dave Miller

I am thankful for the recent emphasis on Christ-centered interpretation of Scripture. It is a welcome balance to the tendency to turn Bible stories into mere moral lessons. However, while all Scripture points to Christ it does not follow that every Scripture has to be an allegory of the Cross. I am especially bothered by what some do with the book of Proverbs. Solomon gave his sons practical wisdom to guide them in choosing God's path over the world's folly. Lady Wisdom isn't a type of Christ but one of two options - two women - that he sets before his sons. Choose one, boys!  Walk with … [Read more...] about Harvest Is Coming: Choices Have Consequences

Back on the Disabled List – One More Time

November 25, 2018 by Dave Miller

On Monday morning at 6:30 I am headed back for my third surgery this year. This one is kind of a good news/bad news thing. My first surgery cost me a gallbladder and a spleen and the second one dealt with a cancerous tumor on my kidney. This one is only designed to fix a post-operative hernia that popped up after the cancer surgery. My doctor told me that a large guy who has lost a lot of weight (well, prior to Thanksgiving Dinner anyway) and has his insides jostled with the removal of two organs, both badly diseased and one (spleen) that has grown huge because of a cyst, should not be … [Read more...] about Back on the Disabled List – One More Time

John Allen Chau, Martyrdom, and Danger in Missionary Efforts

November 23, 2018 by Dave Miller

There has been a lot of discussion recently of the death of John Allen Chau, a young missionary who violated Indian laws to go the remote North Sentinel Island to proclaim Christ to the isolated people who lived there and was immediately killed. He was aware of the danger of his actions and said that while he did not want to die he felt the call of God to take the gospel to these people who did not know Jesus. I am not a missiologist and will leave the in-depth insights to others, but I have a few thoughts I'd like to share. 1. The ultimate commitment of all Christians is to carry the … [Read more...] about John Allen Chau, Martyrdom, and Danger in Missionary Efforts

Things to Be Thankful For…A Record-Breaking Year at SBC Voices

November 20, 2018 by Dave Miller

We don't publish our page-views, which is the easiest way to judge traffic on a blog, and I am not going to do so here. But we have had an amazing year at SBC Voices, judging by our page views. Thank you for being a part of it. Last year, 2017, was actually down a little. We were running the Pastors' Conference and tended to ignore the blog and then after the conference, we were all kinda burned out. If it weren't for William Thornton's consistent contributions we'd have shrunk to nothing. But this year we broke pretty much every traffic record our Jetpack stats track - except for the … [Read more...] about Things to Be Thankful For…A Record-Breaking Year at SBC Voices

Giving Thanks – Embracing the Cross

November 20, 2018 by Dave Miller

Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday, filled with family, food, and football, a uniquely American celebration of our prosperity and all that we have to be thankful for. And let’s face it, with all the problems that we often bemoan, we have a lot to be thankful for, don’t we? We live in a great nation. Regardless of our political foibles, this is still a great place to live. If you are tempted to criticize America harshly, travel. I love Senegal, but I am always glad to set foot back in the USA. I feel privileged to have spent time growing up in Taiwan, but it is not the land of my birth. Israel … [Read more...] about Giving Thanks – Embracing the Cross

Holiday Rules at SBC Voices

November 19, 2018 by Dave Miller

I have family in and am in the countdown to my third (and hopefully last) surgery of the year - next Monday morning. It's Thanksgiving and I hope you have better things to do this week than blog! If the mood hits I might write something. If any of our writers get inspired and want to write, or if something huge happens, post 'em when they are ready. Give about 5 hours to a post before you post - more if you can. If there is breaking news...that takes precedence. I don't plan to be moderating comments unless some of you Reformed guys get into the alcohol and go wild. Things have … [Read more...] about Holiday Rules at SBC Voices
