I am 10 months from a birthday that ends in a 0. I will not be 50 and I will not be 70, beyond that I will not be specific. When I turned 18 I registered as a Republican and voted faithfully as one until this election. I did vote for our senator, Chuck Grassley, but I voted for an independent for president and refused to vote for my congressman (Steve King) because of some unconscionably racist comments he made recently and refused to apologize for. I have renounced my party affiliation and am now independent. My timing is impeccable! For the first time in a long time, the GOP will hold … [Read more...] about The Ball Is in Your Court, Grand Old Party
An Open Letter to President-Elect Donald Trump
Congratulations, Mr. President, on the stunning events of yesterday’s election. You shocked the world. Anyone who knows me or reads this blog knows that not only did I not vote for you but I expressed in the strongest terms my belief that you were not qualified to be president, that I was disgusted by your behavior, disagreed with many of your positions, distrusted your sincerity even on positions we held in common such as the pro-life position, and generally disdained your personality, deportment, and conversation. Sir, I determined last summer that this day should not come and that I … [Read more...] about An Open Letter to President-Elect Donald Trump
Some Thoughts about Bullying
It's been a long time since I was in school. We had chalkboards and erasers. No one knew what a computer was. Or an overhead projecter. Or a VCR. If we watched a movie it involved film with two big reels. We took recess very seriously. We played dodge ball and Red Rover. Trophies were given to those who won - I don't think we knew what a "participation award" was. I played my first video game (Pong) my senior year of high school, and I became quite good. No one wore shorts to school - it just wasn't done, even though there were no air-conditioned schools. And yes, I walked to school barefoot … [Read more...] about Some Thoughts about Bullying
A Plea to American Voters: Let’s Behave as if We Believe
I have written two posts about the election that I decided not to post - I have post-election burnout and they haven't even started counting votes. I can't wait for it to all be over, except for the reality that we are picking a leader for our nation for the next few years. There's so much that troubles me about this, but I've come to the opinion that further discussion is pointless. There's more talking than listening going on, more anger than reason, more division than reconciliation, and I'm pretty sure that I'm more likely to give offense than to sway opinions. My real burden all along … [Read more...] about A Plea to American Voters: Let’s Behave as if We Believe
The Day after Tuesday…
You may be a Trump enthusiast, a reluctant Trump voter, or a NeverTrump hold out like me, but I would guess that we have two things in common: 1. We can hardly wait for the election season to be over. You get no sympathy from me on this. I'm an Iowan and we are blessed to hold the "first-in-the-nation" caucuses, so we start seeing candidates and campaigns before the rest of the country. It's a long campaign. This election has been course and divisive and unseemly. I remember the Reagan campaigns - he inspired a sense of the nobility of the American experiment in all of us. This election has … [Read more...] about The Day after Tuesday…
Is “Where Will You Go When You Die?” a Helpful Evangelistic Question?
Let me make some assertions very clear. I believe there is life after death. I believe life after death depends on Jesus. Those who have the Son have life. Those who don't, don't. I believe in heaven and in the reality of hell. Having said that, I would like to make two observations - one that has, I believe, unassailable biblical support and the other equally unassailable support from our own experience. There is not a single place I've found in the NT where the offer of salvation was presented to someone on the basis of where that person would spend eternity. The gospel … [Read more...] about Is “Where Will You Go When You Die?” a Helpful Evangelistic Question?
An Old Codger’s Advice to Young Whippersnappers
It was one of those moments that is shocking, telling, and yes, abundantly gross. Back in the good old days, the BCI had an annual pastors and wives retreat in the Amana Colonies; a highlight of the year for all of us. After the meetings were over one night I was "fellowshipping" with a group of about half a dozen pastors. Okay, we were hanging out in the large hot tub at the hotel! I told you it was gross. As the chat progressed I had a moment of revelation - I was no longer the young whippersnapper in the group. I was the old guy, the voice of experience. The young pastors were peppering me … [Read more...] about An Old Codger’s Advice to Young Whippersnappers
A Policy Conundrum: The Community and Our Building – What Should We Do?
We've run into a serious question as we have been reworking our policies on the use of our building. Maybe some of you are going through the same thing, and if any of you legal eagles out there want to weigh in, well, free legal advice is always better than paid, right? Backstory Several of the churches in our area try to make bank by renting out their buildings - I can't believe what some of them charge for weddings and other building use. We decided years ago that we'd go a different direction. It didn't necessarily thrill our Building and Properties Team, but we chose to make our … [Read more...] about A Policy Conundrum: The Community and Our Building – What Should We Do?
October 17-23: A Trump/Clinton Free Week at SBC Voices
Like the Pirates Code, many of my rules are more like guidelines than they are actual rules, and I know that articles about Trump/Clinton/the election have been one of my staples in recent weeks, but I think we need to take a break. C'mon guys. Let's talk about the Calvinist conspiracy, or beverage alcohol, or whether strict tithing is still required biblically. Here's the thing: there's a lot of stuff to talk about but there comes a point when we keep saying the same things over and over again. NeverTrump. A vote for Trump is a vote for Hillary. Lesser of evils. Trump is not … [Read more...] about October 17-23: A Trump/Clinton Free Week at SBC Voices
Is There a Path to Post-Election Peace in the Evangelical Church?
Some of those folks out there are really arguing about Hillary, Trump, and the 2016 election, aren't they? I'm so glad I'm not like those folks. I've been amused recently in seeing posts denouncing political discussions. "It's such a waste of time and I hate it." There may be some truth in that, but without fail, those comments come from people who have lobbed bomb after bomb on post after post. I have dropped out of political discussions completely - about a dozen times. Then, "just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in." Is there any sort of path to peace, short of one side … [Read more...] about Is There a Path to Post-Election Peace in the Evangelical Church?
