Yes. Plain and simple. In humility, we ought to recognize that some organizations are doing some thing better than the SBC and we ought to encourage joining with other networks. Mohler said recently, "SBC is going to have to grow accustomed to churches being involved in SBC AND other networks." I agree 100%. I don't want this thread to become about Mark Driscoll, but Acts 29 is an obvious example. Acts 29 is very good at assessing church planters and helping them plant churches. We ought to encourage networking with Acts 29 and other missions agencies such as Action International. … [Read more...] about Should SBC churches be involved with other networks?
From One Resurgence To Another
There is one major difference between the Conservative Resurgence and the Great Commission Resurgence. The Conservative Resurgence made the Southern Baptist Convention inward focused while the GCR is making the SBC outwardly focused. First, I must show my gratitude for the Conservative Resurgence. The fact that the CR made the SBC more inwardly focused is not a bad thing. We could of easily continued to be outwardly focused under the name of "missions" while out convention withered away into liberalism. The need for the Conservative Resurgence was and is obvious. If it were not for the … [Read more...] about From One Resurgence To Another
Structuring The SBC Around Why We Exist
Now that the GCR has passed, the Task Force has been established, and the SBC begins to look at how we can better fulfill the Great Commission, we are going to look at what the GCR might end up becoming, the form it might take, and how it will effect the convention as a whole. Without a shadow of a doubt, Axiom IX has received the most attention. This is probably because some people are worried about their state jobs and a restructuring of the convention could change a lot of things. We are Baptist, we do not like change. Axiom IX could prove to be the most important piece of the … [Read more...] about Structuring The SBC Around Why We Exist
Blog Milestone
We just surpassed 300,000 hits. I hope everyone continues to enjoy the site. (if you have enjoyed it thus far!) We have had a resurgence of contributors and the blog has greatly benefited. In the near future we will be addressing what the GCR might shape up to be, what a restructuring might look like, and how it will help local churches better fulfill the Great Commission. There is a lot of excitement here at SBC Voices and in the SBC in general. May we continue to honor Christ in all that we do. … [Read more...] about Blog Milestone

Great Commission Resurgence passes overwhelmingly!
So, what now? Can the convention finally go beyond the Conservative Resurgence? Can we be gospel, mission and word, centered from top to bottom? We shall see... … [Read more...] about Great Commission Resurgence passes overwhelmingly!
An Identified Baptist that believes we need a Great Commission Resurgence
Let me first come out and say that I have signed the Great Commission Resurgence. Maybe, I need to clarify even more, I signed the GCR without "caveats." At the same time, if there were indeed some document stating a renewed emphasis on our Baptist distinctives I would sign that as well. I caught myself yesterday thinking, "Well shoot, I like Bart Barber and Timmy Brister. I like being Baptist and I like the Great Commission." Then I started to contemplate the supposed "competing" views within the Southern Baptist Convention, the GCR and Baptist Identity. Soon after I started thinking … [Read more...] about An Identified Baptist that believes we need a Great Commission Resurgence
Dealing With Legalism
Here is a great quote on legalism from Chuck Swindoll: "The problem with legalists is that not enough people have confronted them and told them to get lost. Those are strong words, but I don’t mess with legalism anymore. I’m 72 years old; what have I got to lose? Seriously, I used to kowtow to legalists, but they’re dangerous. They are grace-killers. They’ll drive off every new Christian you bring to church. They are enemies of the faith. Other than that, I don’t have any opinion! So, if I am trying to force my personal list of no-no’s on you and make you feel guilty if you don’t join me, … [Read more...] about Dealing With Legalism
Eschatology In the SBC
My time at Southern Seminary opened my eyes to a lot of theological issues. Eschatology is certainly one of those issues. When I arrived, The Left Behind Series was all I knew. I soon realized I had been trapped in a theological vacuous church. I began to study Eschatology and I came to a very different conclusion than the one I had been raised in. Most of the professors at Boyce College, that I am aware of, hold to a post-tribulation, Historic Premillennial view of Eschatology. Yet, a lot of the students I spoke to were going in a different direction. Although there were a fair share … [Read more...] about Eschatology In the SBC
Profile of the Lukewarm
Hopefully, a lot of you are aware of Francis Chan. In his latest book, Crazy Love, he has a chapter on being lukewarm. The book is a great 'coming out' book for Chan. This is his first published book and I think he did very well! I suggest all of you to pick it up and read it! Here is a taste of his chapter 'Profile of the Lukewarm.' Profile of the lukewarm: 1) Lukewarm people attend church fairly regularly either because it’s expected of them or because they like the people there. It’s what “good Christians” do. 2) Lukewarm people give money and time to the church as long as it … [Read more...] about Profile of the Lukewarm
