I spend almost 8 years in a very good Seminary & Bible College. I am greatly blessed by the correct information I received. But when I look back there was some dangerous lessons that never made the official syllabus. Who I am supposed to admire... What I am supposed to believe... Where I am supposed to find answers … Why I am supposed to think a certain way ... How I am supposed to deal with impossible questions... I had very good training for a ministry without risk. I've got heroes to emulate, mantras to disseminate, the right books to mediate, theological systems to … [Read more...] about Who Knew Good Seminaries Could Be So Dangerous?
The Tyndale Estate Sues for Plagiarism
The 400th anniversary of the King James Bible may be jeopardized by new legal action for alleged copyright infringement. The William Tyndale Estate has filed a lawsuit against the British Monarchy. It claims the "Authorized Version" contains parts largely copied from Tyndale's 1525 New Testament translation. Due to the magnitude of this case, the filing seeks an immediate hearing before the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. They claim: In translating the Bible, Tyndale introduced new words into the English language, and many were subsequently used in the King James … [Read more...] about The Tyndale Estate Sues for Plagiarism
Tyler Durden & the Truth about SBC Voices
In light of the most recent controversy surrounding SBC Voices, the editorial staff convened an emergency meeting to revise our policies. As this meeting progressed, some deeper issues came to light. We must now disclose a painful truth to our readers. Matt Svoboda and Dave Miller are not real people. They are merely projections of Tony Kummer's subconscious. They were invented as an outlet for his personal disappointment and feeling of powerlessness in regard to his once beloved denomination. The entire situation closely mirrors the situation in Fight Club and the character of Tyler … [Read more...] about Tyler Durden & the Truth about SBC Voices

The Future of SBC Voices?
Just to start this thing out, let me say that I don't really read this blog. While I am the one who launched it a few years back and worked to get it off the ground, I've moved on. It's just not something I think about more than once a month. The rare exception is when I become curious about some SBC issue. It's time for another transition and I am talking to a few people about taking on Matt's duties. But before we go too far down that road I'd like to hear what you (the actually readers) of this site really want. Are you looking for a debate forum? Do you want independent news … [Read more...] about The Future of SBC Voices?
What’s the History of Pastor Appreciation Day?
I was doing a little research last night about Pastor Appreciation Day. It turns out this unofficial holiday is better known as "Clergy Appreciation Day" or "Clergy Appreciation Month." No Wikipedia page = more work. I found some clues on the Hallmark website. Notably the holiday only dates back to 1992 and is always celebrated on the second Sunday in October. They first sold cards for pastor's appreciation in 2002. I found another helpful post on Leading from the Heart, a UMC blog written by Rev. Laurie Haller. She had this blockquote from the Sept./Oct. 1996 issue of the Saturday … [Read more...] about What’s the History of Pastor Appreciation Day?
Facts & Feelings from Orlando: What Stetzer Can’t Say
I was feeling rowdy this morning, so I left a comment over on this helpful post by Ed Stetzer. Then I realized that blog is a little boring and wanted to set you commenting animals loose. Besides, I think they just deleted my comment anyway! That kind of controlled discussion always raises my blood pressure. He was listing the factors that might keep younger leaders away from the SBC annual meetings. Here's what I said. Thanks for the helpful post and I see myself in a few of your reasons. Here are two more that you can't say: 6. The brand value of SBC is beyond zero and now far into … [Read more...] about Facts & Feelings from Orlando: What Stetzer Can’t Say
Does the SBC Protect & Enable Child Abusers?
The firestorm from yesterday really needs it's own post. Here is a little direction for your ranting: The 2007 SBC Resolution ON PROTECTING CHILDREN FROM ABUSE was a good start, but this only came about after critics went after our denomination. It raised awareness, but is anyone more safe because of it? Most SBC churches are still in denial and think it could never happen to them. All SBC churches are independent, but that doesn't absolve denominational leaders from their role as leaders. They do have influence to make things better. We should talk about failure to use that influence … [Read more...] about Does the SBC Protect & Enable Child Abusers?
